Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: Rich and Poor

The car stopped in front of a high-rise building that looked very modern and luxurious. But no matter how luxurious it was, the apartment that Lucifer was staying in was still many times more magnificent than this building.

With the guidance of the receptionist, Lucifer and Reina arrived at a rather large hall. In this hall were many people who were taller or the same height as Reina.

They were definitely the same age as Lucifer and Reina.

Just like what Owen said, most of the people who were standing in the hall were trying to communicate to each other, getting to know as many people as possible because that would help them a lot in the 2nd Trial.

The hall was very bustling at the moment, but Lucifer felt a little uncomfortable. Lucifer was the type of person who preferred quietness to noisy things like this.

'What should I do now?' Lucifer looked around the hall, not knowing what he should do at this moment.

This was his first time in a place like this, so Lucifer was still really confused.

'Wait, there seems to be something special about this hall.'

Lucifer looked closely, trying to find that special point. Finally, he realized that the hall was divided into two groups, one group on the left side and the other on the right side.

The people on the right and left groups looked like they had no intention of talking to each other. To be more precise, they didn't have much sympathy for each other.

Lucifer didn't understand what was going on between these people, but he didn't care. He hadn't even made any friends yet.

Suddenly, Drifting Aurora naturally walked towards the group on the left. Seeing this, Lucifer had no choice but to follow her. Even though he didn't like Drifting Aurora, he really needed her help right now.

As soon as Reina approached the group on the left, most of the people who were talking just now suddenly surrounded the girl with cheerful and joyful expressions. It was as if they were trying to win her favor.

So this was the power of someone from one of the most famous clans in the world - Shadow Vipers? How amazing.

Lucifer wished that the person that was being surrounded was him and not Reina. But all he could do was to wish.

Sighing, Lucifer was about to turn away, looking for someone to talk to when he suddenly noticed that Reina was acting rather strangely. Even though she was surrounded by so many people and everyone was trying to act cheerful in front of her, Reina didn't say anything to them.

Or rather, she tried not to say anything. Her lips and body were trembling slightly, as if she was holding back something terrible.

But he didn't have time to care about Reina, or rather, why should he care about her? Lucifer turned towards the three boys who were chatting with each other.

Those guys would be his first targets today.

"Hello." Lucifer spoke.

The first thing he needed to do was to act friendly, not show his malice. This was extremely useful when he wanted to please the thugs in the slums, so maybe it would work for these people as well.

Noticing Lucifer, the three of them stopped their conversation and looked towards him.

"Hello." The three of them spoke at the same time.

"My name is Lucifer. Can I be your friend?"

Damn this idiot! Who would say that in the first place? Lucifer was truly an idiot!

Lucifer wanted to punch himself really bad, but he still held back. He knew that what he just said might make the atmosphere even more awkward, but he couldn't take it back anymore.

Lucifer had to wait for the other three's response.

"Sure! I'm also looking forward to making more friends. My name is Clark!" The boy with brown hair said.

"I'm Damian." The boy with red hair spoke up.

"I'm… Lynja." The last one was the boy with brown hair, who was obviously shy about talking to strangers.

Realizing that things were turning in a positive direction, Lucifer gradually relaxed his body and talked to them more enthusiastically.

They talked about many things such as their hobbies, favorite foods, preparations for the 2nd Trial, predictions of the missions they needed to do in the 2nd Trial, …

Everything went smoothly without any problems. Perhaps Lucifer had had people he could call friends for the first time? Or at least until they started asking him about his family background.

"Hey Lucifer, what do your parents do? Or are you in a clan? I'm actually a descendant of a clan called Parisina, it's a pretty famous clan in this city." Clark said proudly.

"And my parents own a lot of businesses, they make a lot of money every month." Damian said.

"And my dad is a director of a big company and my mom is a very powerful system awakener! She's probably one of the strongest in this city." Lynja proudly introduced his parents.

Now it was time for Lucifer to reveal his family background. Although he still didn't quite understand what was going on, Lucifer already had a few guesses in mind.

Perhaps the people standing on the left side were all people whose parents were powerful people in society or belong to some famous clan. And they would decide based on Lucifer's answer whether he was worthy of being their friend or not.

That also meant that the people on the right were people who didn't have powerful parents or belonged to a clan. They were just normal people.

Lucifer stood still, not knowing what to say at this moment. He had to be careful with his words.

"I… I… I…" Lucifer spoke awkwardly, not knowing what to say.

Realizing his odd reaction, Clark immediately spoke up, but this time, his tone of voice had changed a bit. His voice seemed to contain a hint of contempt:

"Hey Lucifer, are you just a normal person with a normal family and nothing special?"

Lucifer didn't reply, but the answer was obvious. Clark, Damian, and Lynja all stared at him. Their eyes were no longer the friendly ones they had before.

Lucifer could recognize these eyes. He had seen those eyes a lot of times in his pathetic life. They were the eyes of normal people when they saw people living in the slums. They were contempt, hatred, …

The three people that Lucifer thought he could be friends with turned out to be people who only cared about his family background. And maybe all the people on the right were like that.

'So this is the difference between the rich and the poor?' Lucifer thought bitterly.
