Chapter 29 - Chapter 29: First Night

During the time when the sun had not yet set, which was the afternoon, Lucifer realized that he was the only one with a weapon, while Nothing had no weapon to defend himself.

Lucifer's intention was to let Nothing take the lead in every situation, but a pioneer without a weapon was too unreasonable and useless.

That's why Lucifer spent most of his time before the sky turned dark creating a wooden stick with an extremely sharp tip using Dagger Of The Night. This thing could be called a spear but much, much cheaper.

This was a handmade spear.

Lucifer gave Nothing the wooden spear, showing that he was a generous person in front of Nothing.

Nothing looked at the spear and then looked at Lucifer, his eyes clearly showing disgust, he was speechless. For a moment, Nothing had thought that this life was unfair.

In this noiseless forest, the only sound other than the owls and the wind was the soft chatter between Lucifer and Nothing.

They had to force themselves to speak as quietly as possible so as not to attract the attention of other monsters.

Time passed, they had been talking for more than an hour and Lucifer was starting to feel a little sleepy. Meanwhile, Nothing had slept all day so he still felt very awake.

Or maybe Nothing didn't need to sleep like a normal human. Perhaps he could live without even having to sleep.

Lucifer yawned a few times and then ordered Lucifer:

"Hey Nothing, can you keep watch for me while I sleep? If any monsters come near, wake me up."

"Okay, just sleep. I'll keep watch." Nothing said in an annoyed tone, but Lucifer didn't care much.

At first, Lucifer wasn't very friendly with Nothing, but he had to admit that Nothing was quite trustworthy.

Especially after they had to work together to fight against Reina during training. But that didn't mean that Lucifer liked Nothing, he just felt like he hated Nothing less than before.

His eyes were heavy, he couldn't even attempt to keep them open anymore. Lucifer gently closed his eyes and fell asleep. This was his first night in the 2nd Trial.

For some reason, Lucifer suddenly felt that his surroundings had become much more comfortable and warm, as if he was lying on his beloved bed in Owen's house.

But that couldn't be because he was now lying on a hard and uncomfortable tree branch and had to endure the cold night breeze that was constantly blowing towards him.

If this was a dream, Lucifer didn't want to wake up at all. He just wanted to continue experiencing this feeling forever.

Lucifer's body felt like it was being hugged by a mushy teddy bear with mellow, warm fur. Lucifer felt more and more comfortable and at ease.

Lucifer died.

It could be said that this was the easiest death for Lucifer. He died without realizing that he had died, and he wouldn't even remember that he had just died when he woke up.

If all his deaths were as easy and cozy as this, it would be great.

The reason Lucifer died was very simple, it was because of the apple he ate a few hours ago. That apple was poisonous and that poison took a few hours to take effect.

Lucifer opened his eyes, not because he felt strange, but because a loud noise from afar woke him up.

Lucifer was still on the branch, not falling down. In front of him, Nothing had disappeared along with the wooden spear, he was no longer in front of Lucifer.

Curious, Lucifer tried to summon Nothing to see if he had gone back into Lucifer's shadow or gone somewhere else.

After being summoned, Nothing immediately emerged from Lucifer's shadow, still holding the wooden spear that Lucifer had given him. Seeing Lucifer, Nothing didn't understand what was going on.

He tilted his head, looking puzzled:

"What's going on?"

"What's going on? Didn't I tell you to keep watch while I was sleeping? Why did you suddenly go back into my shadow?"

"How would I know? I was already in your shadow when I realized it."

Lucifer was pretty sure Nothing was lying, but he didn't have time to argue with him. Right now, Lucifer needed to check what had made that loud noise.

In the distance, a few dozen meters away from Lucifer's location, was the shadow of some kind of creature that looked quite scary.

"Hey Nothing, do you see that shadow? Go out there and check which monster's shadow it is."

"Hey, are you telling me to go die? How could humans be so cruel?"

"I can summon you back anyway. Go away or else that shadow will disappear. I want to know what creature is that." Lucifer urged Nothing.

With no other choice, Nothing could only sigh and jump down. He grabbed the wooden spear hard and approached the shadow carefully so as not to make any noise.

At the same time, Lucifer also switched his vision to Nothing's vision. This way, Nothing and Lucifer's vision would be shared, and he would see what Nothing saw.

This was something he had learned while training with Owen and Drifting Aurora.

'I wonder how those two are doing now?'

The shadow became clearer and clearer. At this point, Lucifer could tell what the shadow belonged to.

It was a creature with the body of a horse but the head of a wolf. The head of this creature was distorted and really gross. This monster had its mouth open, but instead of a tongue, there were skeletal hands coming out of its mouth. The monster looked truly hideous.

It had blood red eyes, the eyes of a predator, ready to pounce on anyone they encounter. "Nightmare" was the most suitable word to describe this monster.

Perhaps Lucifer would call that monster Half Horse Half Wolf.

Lucifer didn't want to confront it at all.

'It is enough. Now get back, Nothing.'

Communicating his thoughts to Nothing was also a skill that Lucifer had learned.

Receiving the command, Nothing turned his back on the monster and prepared to run back as fast as possible. It seemed like he had been wanting to run away from the moment he saw this monster.

But it was too late.

Before Nothing could do anything, Half Horse Half Wolf quickly grabbed Nothing's slender body and pressed him to the ground with its four strong, hairy legs.

The monster slowly opened its mouth and five skeletal hands covered in the monster's foul saliva began to come out from it. The hands slowly but deadly approached Nothing.

Nothing wanted to escape but his strength was no match for this monster.

But before Nothing was killed, Lucifer unsummoned him in time, forcing Nothing to crawl back into Lucifer's shadow even though they were quite far apart. Nothing had narrowly escaped death.

Meanwhile, Lucifer's heart was beating crazily in fear. Lucifer had witnessed the monster preparing to kill Nothing with his own eyes, it was truly terrifying.
