Chapter 17 - Chapter 17

She fell to the ground as the moving car took her unawares. Her heart raced as she felt like she had a panic attack.

"Who drives so restlessly?" She mumbled as she struggled to get up from the ground.

"What's wrong with you, lady?" The driver came out of the car and shouted at her. It was a young man dressed in black trousers and a white shirt, coupled with a bowtie.

"I'm so sorry, I…" She tried to apologize, but the man hissed and entered the car, leaving her standing there.

He drove forwards and honked loudly. It was only then that Fiona realized that she was still standing in the middle of the way. Quickly, she regained herself and shifted to the side, allowing the man to drive forwards.

She watched the jeep as it parked in front of the packhouse entrance. The man looked like a driver that was driving his boss. But as she peered intently at the car, the windows were tinted and she couldn't get a view of the inside.

"Fiona, there you are," Ashley called out as she ran towards her side. Fiona shifted her gaze from the car and turned towards Ashley, feeling slightly angered.

"I waited for you for so long." She said with gritted teeth. "Infact, a car almost hit me."

"I'm so sorry. I had to get my purse that I forgot in the taxi." Ashley said and tucked the purse into her bags which were on the floor.

"I already applied to work at a shop opposite the house." Ashley said, pointing at a store in the opposite direction. "So we could be close."

Fiona said nothing and watched her as she held her bags. She still wasn't sure if she'd forgive Ashley, despite the fact that she made a huge sacrifice of coming all the way here to ensure her safety. Everytime she looked at the person who was once her best friend, she felt like a hole had been carved in her heart.

"Where are you going to stay? I'm not sure if the packhouse would allow you to stay."

"Of course I got a place to stay and it's not the packhouse." Ashley responded. "It's a few meters away from here."

"Okay."

"Look, Fiona, I'm sorry about everything." Ashley tried to apologize as she looked at her friend who didn't seem impressed by her efforts.

Even as Ashley was talking, Fiona didn't look at her. Her eyes were fixed on the car that drove into the packhouse. Two people stepped out of the car, a woman and a man. Felix had also come out to welcome them inside.

Fiona continued looking in their direction until the woman paused and looked at her. She took off her glasses and asked: "Do I know you? You look familiar."

The woman was an elderly woman and she wondered if it was Felix's parents.

"I'm the girl that bumped into the car on the way." Fiona responded.

Felix turned to the woman and whispered into her ear, "She's the new maid."

The woman, Gloria, took her dark shades off and squinted her eyes. "Aren't you the girl who committed a crime in mystic furs pack?"

Fiona felt tongue-tied and stared at the ground in embarrassment. She wondered how many more people knew about her ugly occurrence at mystic furs.

"I'm asking you a question." Gloria came closer to her, sizing her from head to toe.

"Yes, I'm the one."

"What is she doing here? I don't want a criminal among my maids." Gloria shouted while clapping her hands together.

"Aunt, it's okay. I'm in charge of everything. Nothing would go wrong." Felix tried to assure her.

She wore back her thick glasses and followed the elderly man that she came out of the car with. The man had been quiet without saying anything.

"That's my aunt and that's my uncle." Felix said as the duo left. "You don't have to take what they say to heart."

Fiona forced a smile. "What of the alpha and Luna?"

"The man who walked with her is my uncle and the alpha. The woman who followed you is his sister." Felix mentioned and paused for a while like he was holding back important information.

"The alpha has been quiet these days. His wife, the Luna , is terminally ill. That's why his sister, Gloria took over the pack affairs." Felix added as he explained everything in detail to Fiona.

"I hope she recovers safely."

He went inside, leaving Fiona standing outside with Ashley. Felix told her when they first met of how he grew up as an orphan and his uncle took care of him. It meant that his uncle was the alpha of the pack who had walked inside with his sister, Gloria.

"I wonder how he lost both parents," Fiona said to herself.

"I'll be leaving now. Be safe." Ashley announced and walked away with her bags.

The sun had begun setting and the cool evening breeze blew over her body as she stood outside.

Her eyes were fixed on the moon, and she smiled, knowing that the moon goddess had offered her a second chance to move away from Kael.

The environment got dark, and she went inside the house.

Lara was already setting the table for dinner and dishing out food. The alpha, and his sister, Gloria were seated at the left side of the table. Felix was also present.

Fiona walked over to the table and pulled a chair to sit.

"Are you crazy?" Gloria thundered and threw a knife at her. Alpha Hugh held her hand, trying to stop her from lashing out at Fiona

"What gives you the right to sit? Don't you know your place?" Gloria spat in annoyance.

"Aunt, please calm down. She didn't do anything wrong." Felix tried to intervene.

Gloria turned to him and pointed a finger at him. "I hope you don't have feelings for this thing." She said while giving Fiona a distasteful look. "She really wants to place her filthy body on the chair."

"I'm so sorry ma," Fiona bowed her head, with her hand crossed in front of her. She struggled to hide the pain that she felt from the words Gloria used on her. It sounded like the same words that the caretakers in the orphanage used on her.

"Get me water to drink," Gloria ordered her.

"Yes ma." Fiona responded, and left for the kitchen.

As she reached for the cups in the kitchen, she bent her head over the sink and blinked her eyes to the stinging pain of tears.

"You have to get used to it. She's always like that to the newbies." Lara said to her.

"And you haven't quit till now?"

"The pay is the only thing that interests me." Lara wiped the wet clothes with a napkin and leaned on the counter. "I miss the Luna. She was so nice, unlike the alpha's sister." Lara said as she continued with what she was doing.

"I heard she's seriously sick." Fiona chipped in as she held a full glass of water in her hand.

"Yeah, and you know what else?" Lara added.

"What's that?"

"She…"

Before Fiona could listen to what Lara had to say, Gloria's loud voice sounded through the room. WHERE'S THE WATER I ASKED FOR.

Fiona hurried out from the kitchen and headed to the dining room. As she approached Gloria, she missed her step because of her speedy moment. The water ended up splashing on Gloria.

"I'm so sorry ma," She tried to apologize. But before she could complete her words, Gloria's hand stretched out and landed a heavy slap on her cheeks, sending Fiona stumbling backwards.
