Chapter 21 - Chapter 21

AT MYSTIC FURS

His mind was troubled as he lay down to sleep. Deep down, it felt like he wasn't alright, something kept gnawing at him. It was like a pain in his heart. The mate bond pulsed faintly. He closed his eyes, squirming on the bed. Ella wasn't by his side, and he wondered where she had gone.

Kael struggled to close his eyes to sleep. An image of Fiona kept playing in his head until he finally dozed off. Then, he had a dream, which also seemed like a nightmare.

Fiona was by his side. It was the day that she took the blame for the crime he committed. She had locked him up in a room, preventing him from stopping her from turning herself to the police. He struggled hard to get out of the room, banging loudly on the door, but the strong mahogany wood wasn't going to budge with his little effort.

He gave up on struggling, seeing that the love of his life had taken the blame for him. When he finally broke his way out of the room, he rushed to the station where she was and held her hand. Fiona comforted him that she's just an orphan, but he has an alpha position to take and he can't risk it.

They said goodbye with tears in her eyes, and he promised to see her again. Afterwards, as he left the police station, it felt like a dark cloth engulfed him, and a voice which sounded like an echo kept calling out to him: Come to me, leave her and come to me.

He followed the voice and met a woman seated on a rock. She had long black hair. She was naked, and her hair covered her breasts and privates. She turned towards him and continued whispering, come to me. Her face was covered with symbols, and he could make little sense of her body.

She drew her hand in the air, signaling him to come closer. As if in a trance, he kept moving closer to this strange woman. It was as if some unseen force was pulling him closer to her.

Then, at that moment, he felt nothing. All the feelings he had for the love of his life, Fiona disappeared and his heart was filled with a dark substance. He screamed and tried hard to overcome the strange force that this woman was using on him, but it was of no use.

She kept whispering and trapped him under her spell. One part of him was trying to resist her and call out to Fiona, while the other part was willing to follow her.

"Fiona. Fiona. Fiona." He kept screaming in the dream.

Kael continued shouting until he woke up from his sleep, his body drenched in sweat despite the air conditioning.

"Where is she? Where is Fiona?" He screamed and a hand touched him gently.

"Calm down babe. It's me." Ella said as she tried to comfort him.

He raked his hand through his hair, and it dawned on him that it was just a nightmare.

"Why are you thinking about your ex?" Ella sighed with a hand folded across her chest.

"It's not like that babe, I just…" He paused, not knowing what else to say. He couldn't explain what he felt and what he saw. It was like something was pushing him back to Fiona, the woman he now despised.

"But you screamed her name in your sleep." Ella said angrily.

"I'm sorry. I…" Before he could complete his statement, Ella stood up from the bed and flung the sheets at him. She stomped out of the room and slammed the door.

Kael sighed and continued breathing heavily. There was no need to go after her. He knew she was upset about him mentioning his ex while with her. He took a deep breath, trying hard to clear his head.

"Why am I suddenly thinking of Fiona?" He asked himself as he sat on the bed. He shook his head and walked to the bathroom. He splashed water on his face and proceeded to have a shower in order to clear his head.

As he stepped out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist, a knock sounded on the door.

"Come in," He said, thinking it was Ella and wondering why she was knocking and not entering the room as normal.

She didn't enter inside, instead, the person kept knocking on the door. Kael let out a sigh and headed to the door. A woman stood at the door, but it wasn't Ella. She turned her face away shyly as she looked at Kael's bare chest which looked like it was sculpted. It tapered to a narrow waist.

For a moment, she returned her gaze back to his body and continued gawking at him.

"Uhm." Kael cleared his throat as he addressed the petite young lady, jolting her out of her reverie.

"Yes sir, Sorry sir." The girl stuttered, her cheeks reddening as she felt slightly embarrassed. "Your attention was needed downstairs, and I was sent to call you." The maid mentioned.

"Okay." He said, dismissing her. She walked away from the room, and he shook his head as he watched her leave.

He wanted to send her to call Ella, but she had already left. He closed the door and proceeded to get dressed. His mind still wondered why his attention was needed so early in the morning.

He headed downstairs, and met his beta seated with other of his men.

Alexander, his beta, stood up from his seat upon sighting him, and the other men also stood up to greet him as he was the alpha.

"Alpha, the problem of the rogues is getting worse. They attacked an entire family in the north street." Alexander relayed the news.

"And why haven't you been able to get any of them till now?"

"That's the problem, sir." Chris, one of the men stated. "The rogues are acting stealthily. No matter how hard our men reach the scene, we still can't find them."

"Could it be another beast apart from rogues?" Kael asked his men.

"We really don't know, sir." Alexander responded.

"Both of you." Kael pointed to Alexander and Chris. "Follow me, we'd go to the north street together and see for ourselves."

The men nodded without hesitation and allowed the alpha to lead the way.

"The rest of you," He turned to the other men who were still seated. "Return to your duty post."

"Yes sir."

Kael drove with his men until they came to the street where the rogues were said to be found. The street lights and fire hydrants were broken. Even the houses there had broken doors and windows. Few of the residents were pulled out by stretchers into an ambulance.

"The rogues did this?" Kael muttered as he walked into one of the ransacked houses.

The pungent smell of copper hung in the air and a sickening trail of blood was also left on the floor. His stomach knotted as he looked at the place. The windows were also shattered.

He looked at the window and a note was pasted on it in broad letters. "Alpha Kael, I know you're here. Go to the basement."

Kael showed the note to his men and they dissuaded him from doing so.

"It could be a trap." Alexander said to him.

"Let's follow you," Chris chipped in.

He unfolded the paper to read the remainder and at the bottom, it was written, "Come alone."

"Nothing can go wrong. I'll be right back." Kael said to his men as he cocked a gun and held it while walking to the basement.

He pushed open the latch and headed inside. The area was dark and he switched on the dim light. His gun was pointed forwards, ready to attack.

"Anybody here?" He questioned as he took short steps closer.

Suddenly, he heard a snarl behind him. He turned backwards and before he could pull the trigger, claws dug into his neck and he screamed while trying to ward off the attack.
