Chapter 5 - Stats upgrade

(Quest starts in: 2:03 minutes.)

Jayhan rested his back on the wall, watching as Kara was storing items inside a bag she had found in the store.

She was trying to get everything they'll need once they head out and the monster raid starts.

While outside the storeroom, Jayhan could already see the others leaving, most likely heading towards the Green Zone to check their stats.

Sigh!

Jayhan took a deep breath; the injury was still on his gut, but at this point, it didn't matter.

In less than 2 minutes, the entire place will be swarming with monsters.

"Okay, I think I've gathered everything we need. Here, hold this, just in case…"

Kara turned around, handing a hammer over to him.

Without questioning, he took the hammer from her.

"Thanks. The others have headed out; we should do the same. It will be harder looking for a store when we are being chased by monsters," he uttered.

"What type of monsters are we supposed to be running from anyway?" Kara questioned, in her left hand a small dagger, stained with blood, probably because it was used by the others during the first quest.

"That…I don't know for sure. We can only hope it's not something that is fast enough to catch up to cars."

Jayhan now stepped out of the room, walking through the door to get to the exit.

Kara followed behind him, carrying the bag on her back while looking around to see if there was anything else she could take from the store before they exited.

Suddenly, Jayhan stopped.

"Eh? Babe?" Kara leaned forward to check if there was something wrong.

But the only thing she noticed was Jayhan staring at the air in front of him.

[Reminder: You have 8000 coins in your possession. These can be used to upgrade your stats and buy equipment.]

'Uhn? The same thing those people went out to do at the Green Zone. I can do it here? Nah, that can't be right, what the hell makes me special?...'

He paused for a while.

'Open stats.'

[Stats.]

[Strength: 0;

Agility: 0;

Speed: 0;

Endurance: 0;

Coins: 8000c.]

'Incredible. I really can do it from here; I don't need to go to a Green Zone to update my stats…'

He turned around immediately.

"Kara, you have a system just like me; check if you can access your stats."

Kara tilted her head. "Don't we need a Green Zone to do that?"

"Yeah, that's what I thought too. But I can access mine from here…" Jayhan replied; he couldn't help but think if it was only them who had the system.

"Okay… I'll give it a try…"

Kara looked in front of her.

"Open stats." Her voice echoed through the store, but alas, nothing happened.

"It doesn't work…" said Kara, one hand on her waist.

'So I am the only one that can do this? Normally, I would be curious to find out if truly, I am the only one. Not this time; survival comes first.'

For a brief moment, he turned his attention to the huge screen in the store.

(Quest starts in: 1:15 minutes.)

'There's still time.'

Now, he focused on the system and began to allocate his coins to his stats.

[You have spent 1500 coins on strength.

Strength: 20.]

[You have spent 1000 coins on speed.

Speed: 16.]

[You have spent 1000 coins on agility.

Agility: 17.]

[You have spent 2000 coins on endurance.

Endurance: 41.]

[Coins: 2500c.]

As he upgraded his stats, Jayhan continuously felt a new type of power flow through his veins.

It felt like every single coin he spent did some major upgrade in his body.

Although he intended to use this upgrade as a way to calculate the amount of coins that would be allocated per point, it wasn't a fixed price. All upgrade stats seemed to change regardless of the amount spent.

Either way, he felt a bit more prepared.

His plans didn't change.

They will make their way to the convenience store and try to stock up on food, and then find a place to stay until the quest has been done.

If time is given, going to the Green Zone was not out of the question.

But if they don't stock up on food now, monsters won't be the only thing they would need to worry about.

"Let's go; we should be able to make it before time runs out," said Jayhan.

He grabbed Kara by the hand and sprinted out of the store.

Reaching outside, they could fully see the destruction that had befallen the city.

Everywhere was nothing but utter chaos: buildings collapsed to the ground, fire burning the streets, and, worst of all, corpses scattered all around.

Though there were no monsters nearby, the smell alone was enough to make anyone know the kind of monsters that had once made their way there.

Still grabbing Kara's hand, Jayhan used his other hand to cover his nose to block the smell. Any more, and he was sure he would suffocate.

A car.

The thought crossed his mind.

If he was to get a car, then it would be easier for them to move around.

Besides, the convenience store was only a few distances away; Jayhan could already see the familiar light of the shop blinking at the end of the street.

"Just a bit more…"

Jayhan voiced out, as if trying to give Kara a bit of hope.

It was weird that no one else was outside; perhaps everyone was hiding, afraid of the monsters that could spawn.

Halfway to his destination, Jayhan could already see the store.

But it wasn't just that; there was someone waiting at the entrance. He couldn't fully see them so it was hard to tell who they were.

'Shit! Did someone have the same idea as me?' he thought to himself.

Suddenly…

{Jayhan's danger risk has risen to 95%.}

Kara's eyes widened in fear.

She gripped her knife tightly, her eyes scanning the surroundings while Jayhan was dragging her along.

And then…

(Quest has now begun.)

(Survive the monster raid for 40 minutes.)

The giant screen appeared in the sky.

Kara acted quickly, grabbing Jayhan's hand and pulling him back.

Almost instantly, a skeleton monster holding a blade charged out of the corner, its blade almost slicing Jayhan's face off.
