In two months, Kakashi had gone back and forth to collect corpses a total of four times. How could he not be familiar with them? By now, he probably knew the corpses better than his own teammates.

Maybe, during this mission, we'll have to send a few more people to the morgue.

Is this a mission?

No, this is a suicide quest!

And it's a really small shoe to fill!

Kifune's heart was full of "resentment." But before he could even open his mouth to complain, Kakashi beat him to it.

"Hokage-sama, I don't think he can do it," Kakashi said bluntly.

Wow, thanks for the vote of confidence, Kakashi, Kifune thought, grinding his teeth.

Sarutobi Hiruzen rubbed his temple, clearly already overwhelmed with work but still having to deal with Kakashi's antics. "Kakashi, this is an order," he said firmly, leaving no room for argument.

"Then I'm not responsible if he dies," Kakashi replied stiffly.

Kifune's teeth itched with frustration. This version of Kakashi is really not cute at all. You talk as if you'd care if someone died anyway.

"Don't worry, this is just a one-time thing. The mission is a bit special, so consider it a temporary team," Sarutobi Hiruzen reassured.

Kakashi nodded, seemingly satisfied.

"Let's talk about the mission," Sarutobi Hiruzen continued, standing up and walking out from behind his desk. "Kirigakure in the east is getting restless. The scouts we sent were almost wiped out, but one team managed to escape with crucial intel. They're currently in the Land of Hot Springs, but they're being pursued by Mist Ninja. Your mission is to retrieve their bodies and bring them back to Konoha."

The tension in the ninja world was rising, and this information was critical.

Sarutobi Hiruzen glanced at Kifune. "Kifune, although you haven't been on a mission for a while, you're somewhat of an expert in handling corpses."

Wow, thanks for the compliment, Hokage-sama. "Expert in handling corpses" is definitely the title I've always dreamed of, Kifune thought sarcastically.

"I understand," Kakashi responded before Kifune could even open his mouth.

Sarutobi Hiruzen nodded, satisfied. "Any other questions?"

Kifune slowly raised his hand. "Hokage-sama, isn't it a bit risky to send just the four of us for such important intel? Shouldn't we have, I don't know, a small army or something?"

Sarutobi Hiruzen smiled. "Good question. But don't worry, I've already sent teams to block the border of the Land of Fire, and there are several ninja squads nearby for support. Your team is small, so you won't attract much attention. The bigger the team, the more danger you'll face."

Ah, so we're the decoys. Got it, Kifune thought, nodding reluctantly.

"Alright, if there are no more questions, go get ready and leave as soon as possible," Sarutobi Hiruzen concluded.

As they walked out, Kakashi glanced at Kifune and said stiffly, "Meet at the village entrance in fifteen minutes." Then he vanished in a puff of smoke.

The other two teammates gave Kifune a sympathetic look that screamed Good luck, you'll need it before leaving.

Kifune sighed and rushed back to his place to grab his gear.

Meanwhile, back in the Hokage's office, Danzo finally spoke up.

"Hiruzen, Kakashi's current personality is... problematic. If you let me train him, he'll become Konoha's sharpest sword, even sharper than Sakumo."

Sarutobi Hiruzen shook his head. "No, Danzo. Kakashi's talent belongs in the light, not the shadows."

Danzo frowned. "But his teams keep dying, Hiruzen. You can't keep indulging him. Someone has to walk in the darkness, and he's perfect for it."

"I've already found the perfect person to guide him," Sarutobi Hiruzen said firmly. "Minato. He's the best candidate to lead Kakashi."

Danzo fell silent. Namikaze Minato was a name that even he couldn't argue with.

"And what about the other team members?" Danzo asked, still unwilling to let go.

Sarutobi Hiruzen puffed on his pipe. "Maruyama Kifune seems suitable."

Danzo scoffed. "Him? Let's see if he even survives this mission first."

"Then let him survive first," Sarutobi Hiruzen replied calmly.

Kifune returned to his place. Honestly, he didn't need to prepare much-he had everything he needed already. Over the past two months, he'd stocked up on ninja tools and food pills. He could probably survive in the wilderness for a month without breaking a sweat.

The real reason he came back was to use up his daily quota of corpse-touching. After learning his lesson last time, he made sure to leave three chances every day. If no special corpses showed up by nightfall, he'd just find a random white corpse and touch it.

Gotta keep those skills sharp, right?

Author's Note:

What do you think Kakashi's reaction will be if Kifune actually survives this mission? And will Kifune's "corpse-touching" skills come in handy? Stay tuned!
