"Is there someone named Claire here too?" Adam asked in a sweet, childlike voice, his expression utterly adorable.
Of course, he knew Emma wasn't at the office. He'd just knocked her down earlier today. If he saw her here now, it would be a miracle. He asked the question on purpose, to throw people off.
"Oh, you mean Manager Claire? She went out to source some fragrance materials and hasn't returned yet," the receptionist replied, her heart melting at Adam's cuteness. Since Claire and Emma were sisters, it didn't seem odd for him to ask about his aunt.
Adam's cheeks were soft and pale like eggshells, and the receptionist's hand itched to reach out and touch them.
But just as she raised her hand, Adam's toes pushed off the ground and he zipped away on his roller skates like a rocket.
"Hey, little kid…" she called out, waving, hoping to warn him to be careful. But the boy vanished from sight like a spaceship taking off.
