Zane's POV
Finally, he yanked me out. I collapsed to the ground, gasping, coughing, my lungs burning with the need for air. My knees scraped against the rough ground, skin tearing open and bleeding freely.
This guy was insane.
"You said if one of us dies, the other dies too, right?" Alfie said, lighting another cigarette with maddening calm. Smoke curled around his face like a halo of menace. "Why don't you die first, and we'll test that theory?"
I shivered despite the sun.
"I swear on my life, Alpha Alfie," I whispered, trembling. "I was just as shocked as you when we switched. Maybe… maybe the Moon Goddess really is punishing us. I just...I was scared. That's why I lied. I didn't know what else to say."
Tears welled up and spilled down my cheeks, unwanted but impossible to stop. My heart beat like a drum, the fear tightening around my ribs like a noose.
Alfie stared at me in silence. Then, without warning, he crushed the cigarette beneath his boot and marched over.
