Serena sat in the private lounge of the conservatory venue, swirling a flute of champagne between her fingers, the golden liquid catching the afternoon light just so. She was basking in the success of her event. Influencers were posting. A well-known singer had tagged her in an Insta story. The clinking of cutlery, the laughter of well-heeled guests—it all sounded like victory.
Across from her, Victoria Langley sat with one leg elegantly crossed over the other, tapping through her phone with polished red nails.
"You know," Victoria said lazily, "I must say, you played that venue switch perfectly. Poor Charlotte probably had to scramble for scraps."
Serena smiled with satisfaction. "Please. If you're not quick in this city, you're nothing but a sad little hashtag."
They both laughed. It was the kind of laugh that sparkled on the surface and sliced underneath.
