By the River

The riverbank was quiet, save for the gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional splash of water lapping against smooth stones. A breeze drifted through, cool and damp, carrying with it the earthy scent of moss and springtime.

Alexander sat on a weathered bench, hunched forward, one hand cradling the cup long gone cold. He stared at the river as if it might offer him answers. Or at least distraction.

Eleanor found him there.

She didn't speak right away. She just stood behind him for a moment, taking in the way his shoulders were drawn tight, the tension coiled in his jaw.

Then, softly, "Did you talk to her?"

Alexander didn't answer. His jaw moved slightly, like he was chewing on words that refused to be swallowed.

"She looked well," Eleanor continued, easing down onto the bench . "Strong. Radiant, actually."

His eyes flicked up to hers, guarded, sharp. "She just poured tea on me."
