Chapter 27 - Kaga and Genin

The next day

Inside one of the temporary tents set up specifically for the genin participating in the chunin exam, Togi and Okura were resting after the exhausting events of the previous day.

The day before, after successfully completing the second trial, Togi, Okura, and six other genin had been instructed to follow a teacher into the forest and run for hours until they reached a small town near their camp. They arrived late at night, and the teacher informed them that they would learn about the third trial the next day. He also told them they could rest in the tents that had been prepared for them.

Both Togi and Okura had been awake for a while, but they decided to talk before heading out. During their conversation, Togi shared the story of how he and Mata had been ambushed. He explained that Mata had sacrificed herself, staying behind to hold off the Kumo team, giving Togi the chance to escape. Okura, in return, told him how her team had defeated a Konoha team, though two of her teammates had been injured and were unable to qualify for the next trial.

Meanwhile, in the largest tent at the camp's center:

Inside the large tent, an oval table was set up with three wooden chairs, each occupied by an important figure. Tension filled the air as the three individuals sat in silence, glancing at each other, clearly aware of the gravity of the conversation that was about to unfold.

To break the silence, the Hokage spoke first.

"The second trial is concluded, and the third trial will begin soon. Would you like to know who qualified for the third trial?" he asked.

"I'd like to know," the Raikage responded.

"As requested, I'll start with the Konoha genin. Umekuro Aburame, Onakite Uchiha, and Doki Sarutobi are the Konoha genin who qualified. Togi Haishori and Okura Shrihana are the Iwa genin who qualified. Inakami and Imagome are the Kumo genin who qualified. Lastly, only Tabe qualified from Suna. This makes a total of eight genin: three from Konoha, two from Iwa, two from Kumo, and one from Suna," the Hokage stated.

"What about the third trial? Can we learn about the actions the genin will need to perform to qualify?" inquired the Tsuchikage.

"The third trial will be 1v1 matches, with only a few simple rules for each fight," the Hokage explained.

"What about the location of the fights?" the Raikage asked.

"Our team is working on building an arena with earth jutsu. The fights will take place there," the Hokage answered.

"Creating an arena for just a few fights seems wasteful," remarked the Tsuchikage.

"The residents of the nearby city will be attending the Chunin Exam, which is why we're building this arena," the Hokage explained.

"Is it a good idea to let so many civilians in?" the Raikage questioned.

"We will increase the number of ninjas patrolling during the third trial, so it should be fine," said the third Hokage, attempting to reassure his colleagues.

A few hours later:

All the genin had been called by their instructor, and soon they were standing in front of him.

"Now that you're all here, we can start explaining," the instructor said.

"To put it simply, during the third trial, you will fight each other in 1v1 battles until only one of you is left. If you have any questions, now is the time to ask," the teacher explained.

"Where will the fights take place?" asked a Konoha genin.

"In a specially prepared arena," the teacher replied.

"When will the third trial begin?" inquired a Kumo genin.

"The third trial will begin tomorrow morning," the teacher answered.

"Are the matchups random? For example, could a genin from Konoha fight another genin from Konoha?" asked a Konoha genin.

"I'm not sure. You should ask the Hokage if you want an answer to that," the teacher said.

The instructor answered a few more questions until none remained. He then told the genin to spend the rest of the day as they pleased and left to attend to other matters.

The genin were uncertain about what to do next. Some began to train, others went back to their tents to relax, and a few decided to visit the arena site.

Togi and Okura were among those who chose to investigate. Despite the small size of the camp, they hoped to find the location where the arena was being constructed. After some time, however, they couldn't locate it. Building something so large and significant in such a small area was challenging to hide, leading Togi and Okura to believe the arena was likely being built elsewhere.

Nevertheless, the two Iwa genin became more familiar with the camp layout through their search. They knew where the large tent for important individuals was located, and the surrounding tents for the common ninja.

After spending a significant amount of time looking for the arena, Togi and Okura decided it was best to return to their tent. Tomorrow, they would need to be at their best, so they agreed to rest and prepare for the third trial.

Meanwhile, in the forest where the second trial took place:

"We've found almost all of the missing genin, but one is still unaccounted for," one of the ninja reported.

"Continue searching. I don't want to be the one to inform the Hokage about one of the genin's disappearance," urged another.

"Enough talking. Keep looking," ordered a third.

"Yes," the others responded, and the search continued.

something about the history of Konoha ( from wiki )

During the Warring States Period, ninja were organised into small mercenary clans that knew nothing but battle. The two strongest of these clans were the Senju and the Uchiha, who had warred against each other for their entire histories. Eventually, intending to end the constant bloodshed, Hashirama Senju used his position as leader of his clan to broker a truce with the Uchiha clan through their leader, his childhood friend Madara Uchiha. Thus the Senju, the Uchiha, and their respective affiliated clans formed the first shinobi village: Konohagakure — a name invented by Madara himself. Other villages would soon start forming, following Konoha's example and essentially ending the Warring States Period.

Konoha as it appeared shortly after its founding.

Hashirama used his Wood Release abilities to produce much of the village's infrastructure. This ability and his ideals were two of the reasons he was chosen to become the village's leader: the Hokage. Madara, however, feared that the Senju would oppress his clan and attempted to gather support to overthrow Hashirama. No Uchiha would help, forcing him to take on Hashirama by himself. Madara was ultimately defeated at what would be called the Valley of the End and he was believed to have died. As a result of the battle, Konoha came into possession of the Nine-Tails. To contain its enormous power, the village began its trend of sealing the beast within the Uzumaki, a clan that the Senju and thus the rest of Konoha had close ties with.

The First Three World Wars

At some point, Hashirama came to bind most of the tailed beasts and sold them to other villages during the First Shinobi World War, to promote peace and tranquility. However, this peace was short-lived. Hashirama died during the war, shortly after the village began to flourish, and the mantle of Hokage was passed onto his brother, Tobirama Senju, who became the Second Hokage. Tobirama would later be killed by Kinkaku during the same war, but appointed Hiruzen Sarutobi as Third Hokage shortly before his death. Years later, during the Second Shinobi World War, Hiruzen led Konoha's forces against Iwa and Suna, using Amegakure as their battleground. Ame's leader, Hanzō, also fought Konoha a number of times, and during one of these battles gave Hiruzen's students - Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru - the title of Sannin. During the Third Shinobi World War, Konoha fought the ninja of Iwagakure across Kusagakure. Konoha was almost defeated, but Minato Namikaze and his team helped turn the war back in their favour.
