Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Trapped in the Storm

Lien

"But… but Mr. Jiang from Yidu said he's going to stay and help us."

When the rabbit dies, the hounds are cooked. Only now could she see who was truly sincere and who was pretending.

"I'll call him later. Let's go. We need to head back."

The rain was falling too heavily.

Everywhere they stepped, their pants were soaked.

After struggling to get in the car, Lien drove Shen Ming's old car away from the warehouse, heading toward the city.

On the way back, the rain grew heavier.

Shen Ming looked at her tablet, but then the phone that had been left aside suddenly chimed.

"President Shen, your phone's ringing."

At this moment, Shen Ming couldn't spare a thought for who was calling.

She swiped through her tablet and stumbled upon a trending news story.

Her relationship had been exposed.

Pictures of her and Zhuo Hang supporting her outside a private hospital were circulating online.

The two of them coming and going from the hospital.

Even a video of Zhuo Hang shielding her from reporters at her company's entrance had been shared.

Unbelievable—her relationship with Zhuo Hang was out in the open.

She furrowed her brow, and at this moment, she truly wanted to laugh.

Her smile was pale.

She didn't pick up the phone immediately. A minute later, the phone rang again.

She glanced at the screen. The previous call had been from Zhuo Hang himself.

It seemed he had seen the news spreading online.

But this call now was from Ning Zhiqian.

She unlocked the screen.

After a brief pause, Shen Ming decided to answer.

"Hello… what's going on?"

The car was driving steadily when suddenly, there was a sharp brake. She slammed her head into the front seat, and the phone slipped from her hand.

On the other end, Ning Zhiqian was filled with frustration. As soon as the call connected, the sound of a violent crash came through.

Then the sound of her phone losing signal.

She tried to dial back, but it wouldn't go through.

Ning Zhiqian, furious, slammed his phone onto the dashboard.

"Find out where she is right now!"

Shen Ming, whose forehead was now bruised and bleeding, held her head. She noticed that Lien's injury seemed even worse.

"What happened?"

Lien, still in shock, took a moment to respond.

"President Shen, the tire on your car blew out."

Now? In the middle of this storm, with the roads congested and the weather worsening, being stuck on the road was the worst omen.

"Are you okay? Is your head alright?"

Her head was fine, but it felt like her spirit was breaking down.

Tears welled up, though she forced herself to hold them in.

"President Shen… what now? Can we go back?"

Shen Ming lowered her hand, noticing a trace of blood on her fingers.

In the dimly lit car, only the sound of rain pounding against the windows could be heard.

This road leading to the city center was deserted. They had just left the outskirts, and there wasn't a car in sight.

She glanced at her little assistant, then reached out to gently touch her hair.

"We will get back. Just stay calm in the car for now. I'll figure something out."

"Mm…" Lien, feeling slightly wronged, wiped away the tears. Her voice softened, and she leaned against the steering wheel.

Shen Ming, still on the phone, didn't answer right away. Instead, Lien's question made her heart skip a beat.

"President Shen, with the warehouse flooded, the raw materials gone, and no way to produce the new products… will we still be able to pay the employees this month?"

Lien's words were pressing, and after hearing them, Shen Ming's heart raced louder than the storm outside.

But she didn't answer right away.

The dismal environment made Lien fall silent, her spirits sinking further.

"President Shen, if there's no money to pay the wages… will you fire me?"

Even in the dim light, Shen Ming's gaze shone brightly, as though piercing through the darkness to find light at the end of the tunnel.

She looked at her assistant with unwavering determination.

"No, I won't fire you. I'm going to take you to bigger things."

The wages will be paid, the broken-down car will be fixed.

All the darkness and hardship will eventually clear up, just like how the endless rain will eventually stop the moment the car door opens.

Their plight in the storm won't last long.

Beep, beep, beep.

The phone was connected.

"Is this the rescue center? We're on Jiujiang Road…"
