Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: She Was Surrounded

"Alright," he muttered, turning to rally the hospital's security.

Escaping from Zuo Hang and the troublemakers, Shen Ming entered the hospital's rear garden. She recalled Zuo Hang had told her that President Rong was waiting for her here.

After putting down the umbrella, Shen Ming slowed her steps, her heart steady, showing no signs of anxiety. But the moment she spotted the people in the garden, she suddenly picked up speed and sprinted straight toward them.

In the garden, the hospital director and several vice directors were talking to their major benefactor about recent happenings at the hospital.

Suddenly, the director's vision blurred. In the blink of an eye, something small and fast flew by him.

He squinted and realized it was a young woman, sobbing uncontrollably, who collided straight into their major benefactor's arms.

The impact made Rong Zhaonan stumble slightly backward, though he steadied himself, supporting her shoulders.

Shen Ming let go of the umbrella, tossing it at the director's feet, then wrapped her arms around Rong Zhaonan's back, burying her head in his chest.

She cried, her sobs harsh and loud.

"Mr. Rong, I'm scared. Someone's trying to hurt me. Zuo... Assistant Zuo said those people... they're all part of your romantic troubles. They threw eggs at me, and Assistant Zuo got hurt too."

"Mr. Rong, I'm really scared..."

Her voice, thick with tears, was clear enough for everyone around to hear.

The director and the vice directors exchanged glances, uncertain how to respond.

Feeling her warmth in his arms, Rong Zhaonan looked down. She trembled against him, her body shuddering with sobs.

"Romantic troubles?"

Since when had his romantic entanglements reached this point?

His long, elegant fingers gently lifted her chin, tilting her face up to meet his eyes.

His gaze darkened as he observed her tear-streaked face. Her eyes were red and swollen, tears still lingering at the corners, but there was no denying she was beautiful.

He turned to his assistant, Chang.

"Go check on what's going on."

Chang nodded quickly and left.

Once the assistant was gone, Rong Zhaonan gently pulled Shen Ming's arms off of him and attempted to loosen her grip.

"Don't worry. As long as I'm here, no one will dare to cause trouble."

Despite his reassuring words, Shen Ming tightened her hold, nestling deeper into his embrace like a frightened little animal, looking for security.

Those watching couldn't help but feel a bit uncomfortable. The director, sensing the mood, quickly suggested to the others:

"Since Mr. Rong has personal matters to deal with, we'll discuss things later. Vice Directors, let's go check on the outpatient department first."

The group quietly left.

Once they were gone, Shen Ming let go of Rong Zhaonan, standing aside, her head lowered, still looking rather pitiful.

Her breathing was shaky, her lashes fluttering. Then, from the corner of her eye, she noticed a clean hand appear. It was holding a dark-colored handkerchief.

Rong Zhaonan had handed her a handkerchief.

Shen Ming hesitated for a moment before taking it, hearing him speak.

"Clean yourself up."

The handkerchief smelled faintly of pine, pleasant and calming.

She wiped away the remaining tears, still not looking up, but she could feel his gaze on her, lingering like a slow, steady current.

By the time Chang returned, Shen Ming had already been led into the VIP reception room by Rong Zhaonan. Chang was efficient, being the only female secretary in the executive office, and one of Rong Zhaonan's most capable assistants.

Chang leaned in and whispered to Rong Zhaonan, likely updating him on what was happening outside the hospital.

Rong Zhaonan listened, his gaze drifting to Shen Ming, who was sitting on the sofa, fiddling with her phone.

Her expression had changed from the tears and vulnerability to a slight smile, as though she had seen something amusing.

It was hard to reconcile this relaxed, amused version of her with the one who had been sobbing earlier, clutching him desperately.

Shen Ming glanced at her account balance—seven zeros—hard not to smile.

Her jade pendant, which she had worn since birth, was finally worth something. It could be sold at such a high price, so at least the person on the other end hadn't deceived her.

Now that the money had been transferred, and the show was over, it was time to return to the company.

She gathered her things and prepared to leave the sofa, having already thought of an excuse. Just then, Rong Zhaonan's secretary approached.

"Miss Shen, the medical staff is ready. Mr. Rong would like you to come for your check-up."
