Chapter 12 - Chapter 11 — The Race for Life

Como — First rays of sun

The two men advanced quickly, their intentions clear. Vera reacted first.

"Run!" she shouted, yanking Luca's arm.

They sprinted across the slick promenade. Heavy footsteps thundered behind them like hammer blows.

Vera swerved, knocking over a fruit stand, sending apples and oranges crashing across the street. A small obstacle — but enough to slow their pursuers.

Luca clutched the folder of documents tightly. Each breath tore at his lungs.

They couldn't be caught.

They couldn't let the truth die with them.

They scrambled up a narrow stone staircase between old buildings. Shouts echoed behind them. A gunshot cracked — and a bullet smashed into the wall above Vera's head, showering them with dust.

"Faster!" she yelled without looking back.

At the top, Luca spotted the canal — gray water rocking tiny fishing boats.

"The boats!" he pointed.

They raced downhill. Another shot rang out. A window shattered beside them.

At the edge of the canal, Luca spotted an old fisherman dozing inside a small boat. Without thinking, he leapt aboard.

"Come on!" he shouted to Vera, who dived in after him.

Luca grabbed an oar and shoved off, pushing the boat away from the stone embankment.

Their pursuers reached the dock too late.

The boat slid into the middle of the canal, carrying two breathless fugitives — and a cargo of paper powerful enough to burn a city to ashes.

Across the water, the first echoes of revolution were already stirring.

But for Luca and Vera, the fight now was simpler:

Survive until the next sunrise.
