The next morning, the sun shone brightly through the windows of Ethan's penthouse. Elena woke up to the familiar sound of birds chirping outside, but this time, something felt different. The unease that had plagued her for so long seemed to have lifted. She had spent the night thinking about everything—about Ethan, about Rachel, and most importantly, about the fragile bond that was growing between them.
She sat up in bed, rubbing her eyes, and noticed that Alex had already woken up. The sound of his laughter echoed from the living room, and Elena smiled, grateful for the warmth and joy that the little boy had brought into her life.
As she stepped out of her room, she saw Alex running around the living room, his tiny feet pattering on the hardwood floor. He had his toy truck in hand, chasing it around in circles. When he saw her, his face lit up.
"Mummy! Mummy!" Alex cheered, rushing over to her and wrapping his small arms around her legs.
Elena bent down, lifting him into her arms, and kissed his cheek. "Good morning, Alex. What are you up to this morning?"
"I'm playing with my truck!" he announced proudly, holding up his toy. "But I wish we could play outside. Can we go to the park today?"
Elena chuckled. "Maybe later. First, let's get you some breakfast, okay?"
As she made her way to the kitchen with Alex in tow, she felt the warmth of family around her. Ethan had promised her they would figure everything out together, and she was starting to believe him. She wasn't sure what the future held, but for the first time in a long time, she felt like maybe they could make this work.
While Elena prepared breakfast, Ethan came into the kitchen, rubbing his eyes as he walked in. His shirt was slightly wrinkled, a sign of the long hours he'd been working the previous night. But as soon as he saw Elena and Alex, the sleepiness melted away, and a smile tugged at the corner of his lips.
"Good morning," he greeted, his voice still husky from sleep.
"Morning," Elena replied, her voice soft but warm. She could feel the tension from yesterday fading away, replaced by something else—a quiet comfort.
Ethan walked over to Alex, who was sitting at the kitchen counter, eagerly waiting for his breakfast. "How's my favorite little guy today?" he asked, lifting Alex from his seat and playfully spinning him around.
Alex giggled, his face lighting up with joy. "I'm good, Daddy!"
Elena watched them with a soft smile. It was moments like this—moments where she could see how much Ethan had already become a part of Alex's life—that made her heart swell with affection.
"Ethan," Elena said softly, catching his attention as he set Alex down at the table. "Thank you for everything... for the way you've been with Alex."
Ethan stopped in his tracks and turned to look at her, his expression serious but full of emotion. "I told you, Elena. I want this to work. I want us to be a family. No more running away from what's right in front of us."
Her heart fluttered at his words, and she nodded. She knew that there were still a lot of things they needed to work through, but for the first time, it didn't feel impossible. They had a chance—a real chance at building something real, something lasting.
As the morning wore on, they settled into a routine. They all sat down together for breakfast, laughing and joking as they shared stories. Ethan kept his arm around Elena's shoulder, a comforting presence by her side. It felt natural—like a family.
Later that day, they made their way to the park. Alex ran ahead, his little legs carrying him faster than Elena could keep up. She and Ethan walked behind, their hands brushing occasionally, and though neither of them spoke, the silence between them felt more like understanding than distance.
At the park, Alex played with other children, his infectious laughter filling the air. Elena and Ethan found a bench to sit on, watching him with fondness. The sky was a bright blue, and the breeze was just cool enough to be refreshing.
"So, how's work going?" Elena asked, glancing at Ethan.
Ethan leaned back on the bench, stretching his arms out. "Busy. As always. But it's manageable. I'll be traveling a lot in the next few weeks. Meetings, conferences… things like that."
Elena nodded. "Will you be gone for long?"
"Not too long. A few days at a time. Nothing too crazy," he reassured her, though she could tell he was already thinking ahead to his next set of responsibilities.
"I'll manage," Elena said with a smile, though a part of her worried about how much she would miss him. The past few weeks had been a whirlwind, and she wasn't sure if she was ready to face the reality of him being away for work again. But she knew that they had a lot to work through, and she was willing to take it one step at a time.
Just then, Alex ran back to them, his cheeks flushed from the excitement of playing with his new friends. "Mummy, Daddy, look! I got a new friend!" he shouted, tugging on their sleeves.
Ethan laughed, pulling him into his arms. "That's great, buddy. I'm happy you're making new friends."
Elena smiled as she watched them. This—this was what she had always wanted. A family. A place where she felt like she belonged.
