Chapter 10 - Clues in the Morning Fog

Elzan stays low-key behind the tree. As he was hiding, two men approached near other side of the river.

Man1: "Kall, how much longer do we have to go?"

He said as he tossed a small rock into the river.

Kall: "Relax, Daren… just a few more hours and we'll be there… I just need to figure out which direction is next…"

Kall replied, looking at his map.

Daren: "If you say so…"

Daren lies down on the grass and puts his hands behind his head. Elzan watches them as he is observing them. He gets a feeling that those two men seem familiar. He quickly searches his bag and takes out the bounty posters and looks through them. He then found two posters that looked exactly like the two men on the other side. He reads what's written on the poster about the two.

"WANTED

Name: Daren, The Viper,

Bounty: 2,500 Kons

Crime: Murder, Theft, Armed Robbery, Assassination"

"WANTED

Name: Kall, The Serpent,

Bounty: 5,000 Kons

Crime: Murder, Assassination, Forgery, Espionage"

Elzan takes out a small telescope from his bag and looks through it to the men. There's no doubt that these men are the exact men on the posters.

Kall: "I got it!!"

Kall shouted in excitement. He then looks through the papers he's holding. The other man gets up from lying on the grass and looks at the papers, standing beside Kall.

Kall: "This has to be right… if we continue to walk by the end of the river, we'll definitely get to our destination."

He folds the papers and puts them in his bag.

Daren: "Say, Kall… why are we even going to the burnt area? No one wanders there. Wouldn't we be wasting our time?"

Kall: "Idiot… It's not just an ordinary burnt place. I've got rumors that the revenant goes there every Thursday at 4 o'clock evening."

As Elzan heard the word "the revenant", his eyes lit up. He quickly crawled to the front bush to get the information clearly.

Daren: "What? How did you even know that?"

Kall: "I overheard from the old man, Jeb."

Daren: "The Crazy Jeb?"

Kall nods, smirking.

Daren: "Now that you mentioned… that old man never stops talking about the revenant… He must know a lot about him… why didn't you-"

Kall: "Because I don't need to. Besides, he talks too much, all I had to do was sit in the tavern and listen."

Daren chuckles in amusement.

Daren: "And let me guess… after a few drinks, he started spilling all his "secrets," huh?"

Kall: "More like yelling about them to anyone who'd listen. The only thing that caught my attention is when he was talking about how the revenant always shows up at the burnt area, same time, same day, like a clockwork."

Daren leans in, lowering his voice.

Daren: "You actually believe him?"

Kall: "Jeb might be a crazy old man, but even a broken sundial is right twice a day.

Daren: Right… so because of that, this journey about "collecting the bounty of the revenant" began, huh?"

Daren said, poking Kall's arm with his elbow.

Kall: "Exactly… why would we be here in the first place?"

Elzan, hidden behind the bush, clenched his fists.

Elzan: "The burnt area? What burnt area are they talking about? I mean there are a few villages that got burnt by the King Kronox but which one are they talking about? And collect the bounty of the revenant? I never knew the revenant was wanted by the authorities…"

Elzan whispered to himself, trying to connect the strings. Now that he knows that the two wanted criminals were planning to head straight for it because of the revenant.

Daren: "Fine. But if we find nothing, you owe me a damn good meal."

Daren shakes his head.

Kall: "Oh, don't worry. If we find what I think we will, we'll be feasting like kings."

The two stood up, grabbing their weapons. Elzan held his breath. He had heard enough. If he wanted answers about the revenant, he had to get to the burnt area before they did. According to what they said, the place must be by the end of the river.

Elzan quickly backs up and retreat from the river. He takes the path which is parallel to the river. The sun is raising but the sky is a bit red. Thinking this might not be a good sign, he takes out his map and searches for the place he must go. While his eyes were wandering, he realised that the location he must go is the south region.
