Yuhi Shinku frowned, "You're too young to be smoking. It's bad for your health. A ninja needs to take care of their body."

As he spoke, he snatched the cigarette from Kifune's mouth and, under Kifune's stunned gaze, put it between his own lips. He took a deep drag, then exhaled slowly, surrounding himself in a cloud of smoke.

"..."

So much for "bad for your health."

A man's words are full of lies.

Kifune could only pull out another cigarette and light it again.

Neither of them spoke after that. The silence was heavy, broken only by the occasional puff of smoke. Neither seemed to care about the unconscious Imai Kuriyama lying nearby, though she did frown slightly in her sleep.

They say the bond between men is forged through shared experiences-fighting side by side, sitting in the same classroom, or smoking together.

Well, it seemed to hold true.

Yuhi Shinku found himself liking Kifune more and more. The kid had protected his companion, completed the mission, endured pain, and even smoked like a seasoned veteran.

For a moment, he wondered if Yuhi Kurenai's future fondness for Asuma was because Asuma smoked and had somehow "bribed" her.

After a shared moment of smoke.

"Senior Shinku, I'm feeling better now. Should we get moving?" Kifune said, his spirits lifted. Though his body still ached, the numbing effect of nicotine had dulled the pain.

"You know me?" Yuhi Shinku raised an eyebrow, surprised.

Kifune scratched his chin, "Asuma and I are friends. Asuma and Yuhi Kurenai are friends, so..."

"Asuma?" Yuhi Shinku's frown deepened.

With the instincts of a protective father, he sensed there was more to Kifune's use of the word "friend."

Kifune could only mourn for Asuma in his heart for three minutes.

Sorry, Asuma. Your dad's giving me a hard time.

We corpse collectors don't wait to settle scores.

By the time they returned to Konoha, it was already noon the next day.

Kifune quickly handed over the mission, using his injuries as an excuse to keep things brief. He delivered the bodies of the three Konoha ninjas to the Intelligence Division and left.

After all, the Intelligence Division would extract whatever information they could from the corpses, and the bodies would eventually end up back with him anyway. He wasn't in a hurry.

When Yuhi Shinku and Sarutobi Hiruzen questioned him about the powerful Earth Release user who had killed Kaguya Chiren, Kifune played dumb. He claimed he'd been unconscious and had no idea what happened.

As Kifune walked away, Sarutobi Hiruzen took a long drag from his pipe, the smoke curling around him. Yuhi Shinku, standing beside him, felt a twinge of unease.

"Shinku."

"Huh?" Yuhi Shinku blinked.

"Are you sure it wasn't him?"

Yuhi Shinku chuckled. "Kifune's a good kid, but there's no way he could've pulled that off. A Mist ninja chunin, maybe, but Kaguya Chiren? No way."

He shook his head.

Sarutobi Hiruzen smiled faintly. "You're right. When you get old, you start overthinking things. How I wish Konoha had another genius like that right now."

These were troubled times.

The major hidden villages were growing restless, and the Mist ninja's recent provocations were clearly testing Konoha's limits.

Thinking of powerful shinobi, Hiruzen couldn't help but recall the late "Konoha White Fang," Hatake Sakumo.

If Sakumo were still alive, his mere presence would've been enough to intimidate an entire village. Konoha's situation wouldn't be so dire.

Even though his three disciples-Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade-had become formidable ninjas in their own right, their combined influence still paled in comparison to Sakumo's.

If only Konoha had a few more strong, independent shinobi, Hiruzen's burden would be much lighter.

Yuhi Shinku, sensing Hiruzen's worries, decided it was the right time to bring up an idea he'd been sitting on for a while.

"Hokage-sama, I've been thinking about this for a long time. I'd like to resign from the Anbu. I hope you'll approve."

"Why?" Hiruzen was surprised.

Yuhi Shinku was a capable ninja with a high mission success rate. He was one of the few Anbu Hiruzen could rely on.

Shinku hesitated, then said, "I feel the oppressive environment of the Anbu isn't for me. Maybe... I'm better suited to teaching other ninjas. I want to nurture fresh blood for Konoha, to help them become strong, independent shinobi. I'd like to pass on my experience."

"Oh? Is that so?"

Yuhi Shinku nodded.

"But it'd be a waste to send you to a ninja academy. How about this: we'll set up a ninja training camp, and you'll be the instructor. Your job will be to impart battlefield experience to genin and chunin, to reduce unnecessary casualties."

Hiruzen quickly devised a plan to make the most of Yuhi Shinku's talents.

An experienced and powerful ninja like him could indeed help minimize losses among Konoha's younger ranks.

With war on the horizon, the timing was perfect.

"Yes, Hokage-sama!" Yuhi Shinku replied.

Then, an idea struck him. "Hokage-sama, to make the training camp more effective, I'd like to request someone's assistance."

"Who? Maruyama Kifune?"

"Exactly!"

"What? A training camp? No, no way. I'm not going."

After hearing Yuhi Shinku's proposal, Kifune, who was lounging in a rocking chair recovering from his injuries, immediately rejected the idea three times.

Are you kidding me?

You want me to collect the bodies of genin and chunin in a training camp? No thanks.
