Chapter 9 - First Test: Aethonix, Keeper Of Stars

As the recruits entered the large room, they felt a sudden jolt, like being transported to another realm. When their vision cleared, they found themselves back in the same room – but with a twist. Leo discovered he was now in a room with only 7 other soldiers.

Nia's voice echoed through the rooms, addressing all 32 recruits. "The Paradox Orb's energy has created these illusionary rooms, fueled by mana from Vassals. You're in the same room, yet different dimensions."

Her words dripped with intrigue. "Welcome to the Room of Aethonix, Keeper of Stars. Be warned, he despises visitors. Your goal is to collect the key hanging from his neck and escape through the door to the next test."

The recruits exchanged determined glances, their competitive spirits ignited. With Nia's parting words – "Wish you best of luck" – the challenge began.

Leo's eyes locked onto the task ahead, his mind racing with strategies to overcome Aethonix's wrath and claim the key. The illusionary room's secrets and dangers awaited, and only the most resourceful and brave recruits would succeed.

Leo's thoughts were interrupted by a sudden, primal warning. Danger was closing in. Without conscious thought, his hand shot up, catching a razor-sharp ice shard mere inches from his forehead. The force of the projectile sent a shockwave through his arm, but he held firm.

As he looked around, a chill ran down his spine. Three soldiers lay lifeless on the ground, each struck by similar ice projectiles. The attack had come without warning, and the lethality was evident. Leo's instincts screamed for caution, his mind racing to identify the source of the threat and anticipate the next move.

The Room of Aethonix had just become even more treacherous. With the ice shard still clutched in his hand, Leo's senses remained on high alert, ready to respond to any further danger that might arise.

A figure emerged from the shadows, its movements fluid and calculated. Before Leo could react, the figure launched a flurry of ice projectiles, each one hurtling towards him with deadly precision.

Leo sprang into action, dodging and weaving with swift agility. The ice shards whizzed past him, shattering against the walls or embedding themselves in the floor. His heart racing, Leo's eyes locked onto the figure, tracking its every move as it prepared to unleash another volley.

The figure's features remained obscured, but its intent was clear: eliminate Leo and the rest. The Room of Aethonix had become a deadly arena, and survival depended on Leo's ability to outmaneuver his mysterious attacker.

The figure's intent was clear: deadly elimination. Leo's mind flashed back to Nia's words – the Aethonix's hatred for visitors. It seemed the creature's wrath was being unleashed upon them.

As he dodged the relentless ice projectiles, Leo noticed the other soldiers struggling to evade the attacks. The room was a chaotic dance of death, with shards of ice slicing through the air.

Time seemed to warp, and the minutes ticked by in a blur. Before long, the room fell silent, except for the sound of ragged breathing. Leo glanced around, his heart sinking. In less than five minutes, the number of recruits had dwindled drastically – only two remained: himself and a badly injured soldier, clinging to life.

The figure continued its assault, unrelenting in its pursuit. Leo knew he had to act fast if he wanted to survive. The question was, could he outsmart the figure and claim the key, or would he become the Aethonix's next victim?

The figure's roar shook the room, and it burst forth from the darkness. Leo's eyes widened as the Aethonix, Keeper of Stars, revealed itself in all its majestic terror. A magnificent dragon, its body shimmered with starlight and shadow, its scales glinting like celestial bodies.

The Aethonix's eyes burned with an inner fire, and its gaze fell upon Leo. The dragon's presence was both mesmerizing and terrifying, its power palpable. The air seemed to ripple around it, as if reality itself was bending to accommodate its might.

Leo stood frozen, awestruck by the creature's grandeur. The injured soldier, forgotten in the moment, let out a faint whimper. The Aethonix's attention shifted, and its gaze settled on the soldier. With a swift motion, the dragon unleashed a blast of icy energy, ending the soldier's life.

Now, Leo was the sole target of the Aethonix's wrath. The dragon began to circle, its eyes fixed on him, and Leo knew he had to act fast if he wanted to survive and claim the key hanging from its neck.

The Aethonix, Keeper of Stars, was a majestic creature with a body made of shimmering starlight and dark, ethereal scales. Its massive wings stretched wide, casting a shadow over the room as it hovered, its eyes burning with an inner fire. A delicate crown of stardust rested on its brow, pulsing with an otherworldly energy.

The Aethonix's roar was a celestial music, a harmony of creation and chaos that echoed through the room.

A glowing key hung from its neck, suspended from a chain that seemed woven from the threads of the cosmos. The Aethonix's gaze was piercing, its presence both mesmerizing and terrifying. As it moved, the stars in the room seemed to shift and realign, responding to its celestial power.

The air around it rippled with energy, and its very presence seemed to warp reality. The Aethonix exuded an aura of ancient wisdom and fierce protection, guarding the secrets of the Room of Aethonix with its life. Its wrath was not to be underestimated, and only those who proved worthy would claim the key and escape the room alive.

The air was heavy with tension, the scent of ice and blood hanging over the room like a pall. The Aethonix, massive and imposing, hesitated, its gaze fixed on Leo as if waiting for him to make the first move.

Leo's eyes narrowed, a spark of understanding igniting within him. "I guess it can sense aura... it left the strongest one alone," he muttered to himself. His expression transformed, fear and disdain giving way to a wicked grin.

With a fierce battle cry, Leo charged forward, his movements swift and deadly. "Bring it on, you damn reptile!" he taunted, dodging the Aethonix's icy projectiles with ease. The dragon's mouth spewed forth a relentless barrage of frozen shards, but Leo evaded each one with agility, his eyes locked onto the prize hanging from the Aethonix's neck – the key.

The battle had begun, and only one could emerge victorious.

The Aethonix, Keeper of Stars, towered over Leo, its massive dragon form radiating an aura of celestial power. As Leo charged forward, the Aethonix unleashed a barrage of ice projectiles, each one hurtling towards him with deadly precision.

Leo dodged and weaved with incredible agility, his movements swift and calculated. He narrowly avoided the icy shards, his eyes fixed on the key hanging from the Aethonix's neck.

The dragon's attacks grew more intense, its icy breath filling the air. Leo leapt and bounded across the room, using his speed and agility to evade the Aethonix's onslaught.

As the battle raged on, Leo spotted an opening and launched a fierce counterattack. He sprinted towards the Aethonix, dodging its icy claws and striking at its scales. The Aethonix roared in response, unleashing a blast of frozen energy that sent Leo flying across the room.

Leo quickly regained his footing and charged forward once more. The Aethonix met him with a powerful swipe of its claws, but Leo dodged at the last second, using the momentum to fuel his own counterattack.

The fight continued, with both combatants exchanging blows and showcasing their incredible strength and agility. The Aethonix's icy powers clashed with Leo's determination and combat prowess.

As the battle reached its climax, Leo spotted a weakness in the Aethonix's defense. With a swift and precise strike, he targeted the dragon's vulnerable spot, momentarily stunning it.

Seizing the opportunity, Leo sprinted towards the Aethonix and snatched the key from its neck. The dragon roared in anger, but Leo was already making his escape, the key clutched tightly in his hand.

With the key in hand, Leo dashed towards the door, ready to face the next challenge. The Aethonix, still enraged, watched him leave, its icy gaze burning with a fierce intensity.

As Leo snatched the key from the Aethonix's neck, he thought he'd secured his victory. But the dragon's reaction was far from over. With a deafening roar, the Aethonix unleashed a furious assault, its icy claws swiping at Leo with renewed ferocity.

"You think a simple key is enough to leave?" the Aethonix's voice echoed in Leo's mind. "You must prove your worth to claim victory."

Leo realized that merely obtaining the key wasn't enough; he had to defeat the Aethonix to truly win. With a fierce determination, he steeled himself for the final confrontation.

The battle intensified, with both combatants exchanging blows. Leo dodged the Aethonix's attacks, looking for an opening to land a decisive strike. The dragon's powers were formidable, but Leo's resolve was unshakeable.

In a flash of insight, Leo spotted his chance. With a mighty cry, he launched himself at the Aethonix, unleashing a powerful attack that struck the dragon's heart. The Aethonix let out a final, anguished roar as its body began to dissipate, its icy form shattering into a thousand pieces.

As the last shard of ice disappeared, Leo stood victorious, the key clutched in his hand. He took a deep breath, his chest heaving with exhaustion. The Room of Aethonix had tested his limits, but he'd emerged triumphant.

With the Aethonix defeated, the room began to shift and change. The door to the next challenge swung open, revealing a new trial awaiting Leo. He steeled himself, ready to face whatever lay ahead, the key held tightly in his grasp.

As Leo entered the large field, the harsh reality of the test hit him like a ton of bricks. The door behind him vanished, sealing his fate. He gazed out at the battle-scarred landscape, his eyes scanning for any signs of danger.

Suddenly, doors materialized around the perimeter of the field, and 19 other soldiers emerged, each one looking just as determined – and desperate – as Leo. The doors behind them disappeared, leaving no escape.

Leo's mind reeled as he realized the true nature of the test. It wasn't just a challenge; it was a fight for survival. The stakes were deadly, and the cost of failure was one's life.

He glanced around at the other soldiers, noticing the mix of emotions on their faces. Some seemed resolute, while others appeared shaken. Leo knew he had to focus if he wanted to survive.

The field fell silent, the only sound the heavy breathing of the soldiers.

With the Aethonix defeated, Leo felt a sense of relief wash over him. He'd cleared the first hurdle, but now he faced a new, unsettling uncertainty. As he entered the vast field alongside the other soldiers, he couldn't help but wonder what the next test would entail. Would it be a trial by fire, a maze of illusions, or perhaps a challenge that pushed him to his moral limits? The possibilities swirled in his mind, each one more absurd and daunting than the last.

As Leo scanned the field, his eyes landed on a familiar face – Edward, another soldier he'd encountered earlier. Before he could call out or make a move, Nia's voice resonated across the landscape, her words echoing through the air and commanding the attention of all the soldiers.
