Chapter 17 - Chapter 55-56-57

Chapter 55: The Family Reunion

Aaron's black truck pulled into the driveway of his parents' house in Virginia Beach. He was exhausted, but the feeling of being home was unmatched. The airborne mission had been one of the most intense of his career, and though the world was talking about it, he knew the details would never be released.

Opening the front door, he was greeted by the comforting smell of freshly brewed coffee and something baking in the oven. In the living room, his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth, were sitting on the couch, while Cathy was on the floor with a pillow propped on her arm, all of them staring at the TV.

"Son!" Elizabeth said, immediately standing up to hug him. "I'm so glad you're here!"

Joseph looked back with a smile.

"Welcome back, kid. We were wondering how long you'd be around this time."

Cathy looked up from the news, smiling at the sight of her brother. — Hey, Bravo 1, you finally showed up.

Aaron laughed, hugging his mother first, then his father, and finally his sister.

"How are you guys?"

"Better now that you're here," Elisabeth replied, returning to the couch.

Aaron finally realized what had kept them so engrossed. On the screen, a news anchor was talking about the rescue mission of the hijacked plane.

"…a daring operation by the United States special forces, rescuing 150 passengers in mid-air. There's no official information about which unit carried out the attack, but sources say it was extremely well coordinated…"

Cathy glanced at Aaron sideways, a suspicious smile on her face.

"You have nothing to do with this, do you?"

Aaron just laughed, shaking his head.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

Joseph narrowed his eyes.

"I know what that laugh sounds like, son. So you're not going to tell anyone, right?"

Aaron slumped into an armchair.

"Special operations, Dad." You know how it works.

Elisabeth, however, looked more concerned.

"I just want to know if you're okay. These things always make me nervous."

"I'm fine, Mom," Aaron said, holding her hand with a smile. "Everything went as planned."

Joseph turned off the TV and turned his attention to his son.

"So, do you have any plans for these days off?"

"Not yet, but I thought I'd spend more time with you guys, maybe even go to the beach. It's been a while since I've been there."

Cathy laughed.

"Aaron Rollins at the beach? I never thought I'd see that again. You must be planning to swim in your pants and shirt, like always."

"Maybe," he replied with a sideways smile. "I don't want to put on a show."

Everyone laughed, the warm sound filling the room. It was rare to have moments like this, with the family together and relaxed.

As the relaxed atmosphere continued, Elisabeth got up to get coffee from the kitchen. Cathy took the opportunity to tease her brother again.

"Seriously, Aaron, you never talk about your missions. It must be surreal to do something like rescuing 150 people in mid-air."

"If I had done something like that, Cathy, maybe you would be right. But, like I said, I can't confirm anything," he replied with a mysterious smile.

Joseph interrupted.

"Leave your brother alone, Cathy. He already does so much for all of us."

Cathy rolled her eyes, but smiled.

"I know, I'm just kidding."

Aaron, feeling the weight of responsibility and at the same time the relief of being home, looked around. He knew that moments like this were rare and precious.

Later that night, after dinner, the family was gathered again in the living room, talking about future plans. Elisabeth asked:

"Aaron, have you ever thought about taking a longer leave? Maybe spending some time traveling?"

Aaron shook his head.

"Not yet. I feel like I still have more to do, more to contribute. But I promise that when the time comes, I'll spend a lot of time with you guys."

Cathy crossed her arms. "I hope this means you'll finally get to take a vacation with me. We've always wanted to go to Hawaii, remember?"

"I remember," Aaron replied. "And who knows? Maybe we can plan something for next year."

Joseph, who had been silent until then, said, "The important thing is that you enjoy these days here. The war doesn't have to be on your mind all the time."

Aaron nodded, feeling the weight of his father's words. "I know, and I promise to enjoy every moment here with you guys."

Chapter 56: A Day at the Beach

The morning in Virginia Beach began with a clear sky and bright sunshine. The breeze carried the smell of the ocean and the distant sound of crashing waves. For the Rollins family, it was the perfect day to escape the routine and enjoy a rare moment together.

Elisabeth was busy in the kitchen preparing a cooler with sandwiches, fruit, and bottles of water. Joseph helped carry folding chairs and an umbrella to the car. Cathy was ready in a light dress, sunglasses, and a straw hat. Aaron, as usual, was running late, looking for something to wear.

"Aaron!" Cathy called from the living room. "If you take any longer, the sun will set before we get there!"

Aaron appeared in the hallway, wearing dark blue shorts and a white T-shirt.

"I'm ready, little sister. I was just looking for my hat."

"You're a disciplined man at work, but you look like a teenager when you're at home," Cathy teased with a smile.

Joseph laughed, patting his son on the shoulder.

"Come on, kid. The ocean is waiting."

The family reached a quiet spot on the beach, away from the busiest areas. The spot was sparsely populated and had plenty of dunes covered in undergrowth. They set up their umbrella and chairs on a flat area, while Cathy hurried to take off her shoes and feel the sand under her feet.

"Oh, this is so nice," Cathy said, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath.

Elisabeth smiled when she saw her.

"It's been a while since we've had a day like this."

Aaron took off his shoes and walked into the water. The waves lapped at his feet, bringing a sense of calm he hadn't felt in months. He stared into the distance, lost in thought, as Joseph approached.

"Everything okay, son?" his father asked.

Aaron nodded.

"Yeah, I was just thinking about how simple, yet so nice, this is. Sometimes it's easy to forget how important moments like this are."

Joseph put a hand on his shoulder.

"That's why we're here. Enjoy it while you can."

Cathy quickly convinced Aaron to get in the water with her.

"Come on, Bravo 1! I want to see if you can still swim after so long away from the ocean."

"You know I'm a SEAL, right? Swimming is what I do," Aaron replied, laughing.

They ran to the water, where they started a game of who could dive the fastest into the waves. Elisabeth, sitting under the umbrella, watched with a smile, while Joseph read a book.

"They never grow up, do they?" Elisabeth commented, shaking her head.

"Good thing," Joseph replied, laughing.

After a while, Aaron and Cathy returned to the sand, exhausted but happy. Cathy brushed her wet hair from her face and looked at her brother.

"I admit, you can still swim."

Aaron smiled.

"Thanks, little sister. It's nice to have your approval."

While the brothers rested, Elizabeth brought them sandwiches and water.

"I'm so glad we're all together today," she said, handing Aaron a sandwich.

"Me too, Mom," he replied, taking a bite.

Cathy looked at Aaron as she ate.

"So, little brother, any news? Any secret missions you can't tell us about?"

Aaron laughed.

"You know I can't talk about that."

"I know," Cathy replied, rolling her eyes. "I'm just glad you're here and not in some dangerous place right now."

Joseph looked at his two sons, his eyes shining with pride.

"You're both amazing, you know? Both serving your country in different but equally important ways."

Elisabeth nodded.

"And we're so proud of you both."

Aaron looked at his parents and sister, feeling a warm glow in his chest. Moments like these were rare and precious, and he was determined to make the most of them.

As the sun began to set, turning the sky orange and pink, the family decided to take one last walk along the beach. They walked side by side, talking about old memories and plans for the future.

Cathy took Aaron's arm as they walked. "Promise me there will be more days like this?"

Aaron looked at her with a smile. "I promise."

Joseph and Elizabeth walked a little ahead, hand in hand.

"This was a perfect day," Elizabeth said.

"It was," Joseph agreed. "I hope we have many more like this."

As the sky darkened and the stars began to appear, the family walked back to the house, carrying chairs and an umbrella, but most of all, carrying with them memories of a day filled with love and laughter.

Chapter 57: Reunions and New Beginnings

Aaron sat at the kitchen table with his parents, Joseph and Elisabeth, enjoying a leisurely breakfast. Sunlight streamed through the curtains, bringing a comfortable warmth to the house. Despite the cozy atmosphere, Cathy's absence was felt. She had been deployed again to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Enterprise.

Elisabeth sighed as she stirred her coffee.

"I miss her. Even though I know Cathy is doing what she loves, I can't help but worry."

"She's strong, Mom," Aaron said, cutting into a piece of toast. "She's been trained by the best."

Joseph looked at his son and smiled.

"Including by you."

Aaron laughed, but before he could respond, the landline rang. Elisabeth answered quickly. After a few seconds, she covered the mouthpiece with her hand and whispered to Aaron,

"It's Cathy!"

Aaron put down his fork and picked up the phone with a smile.

"Cathy! How are you aboard the Enterprise?"

On the other end of the line, Cathy sounded cheerful.

"Everything's fine, little brother. I'm in Mumbai now. We caught a break here, and you won't believe who I ran into."

"Who?" Aaron asked curiously.

"Steve," Cathy replied. Her voice held a hesitant tone.

Aaron was silent for a moment. He knew Steve McGarrett well enough to know that this reunion was no casual one.

"Steve? And how was it?"

"We talked," Cathy admitted. "He apologized for everything that happened. Said he never should have broken up with me like that."

Aaron relaxed a little, but his voice was still cautious.

"What about you?"

"I… I think we're getting back together," Cathy said in a firmer tone. "He's different now, Aaron. He's changed."

Aaron sighed.

"I just want you to be happy, Cathy." But if he messes up again, you know I'll be there, right?

"I know," she replied, laughing lightly. "And I appreciate that, but I think it'll work out this time."

As Cathy hung up the phone and prepared to leave, her thoughts were on Steve. They had met by chance while she was walking through the colorful markets of Mumbai. He was there, off duty with his team, and fate seemed to have decided it was time for them to settle their issues.

"Cathy?" Steve called when he saw her.

She turned, surprised, but at the same time feeling her heart race.

"Steve. What are you doing here?"

"My team is off duty, and I… well, I guess I was lucky to find you," he said with a genuine smile.

They spent hours talking, walking the busy streets and rediscovering each other. Steve explained that his decision to break up with her years ago was a mistake motivated by the fear of losing her to the constant danger of military life.

— I was wrong, Cathy, — he said as they walked along the beach. — I thought I was protecting you, but I only ended up pushing away the person who mattered most to me.

Cathy looked at him, her eyes shining with a mix of emotions.

"Steve, I'm not going to lie. It was hard. But maybe… maybe it's time to let go of the past."

Meanwhile, at the Rollins house, Aaron sat with his parents in the living room, watching some random show on TV. He was still thinking about Cathy's call.

"What did she say?" Joseph asked curiously.

"She met Steve in Mumbai," Aaron replied. "It seems like they're getting back together."

Elisabeth raised her eyebrows in surprise.

"Steve? I thought they were done for good."

"Me too," Aaron said. "But it seems like he's trying to fix things."

Joseph smiled slightly.

"Well, if he's as determined in the relationship as he is with Seal, maybe it will work this time.

Aaron nodded, but a shadow of worry still hung over him.

"I just want her to be happy."

As the days passed, Cathy and Steve continued to enjoy their time together in Mumbai, making new memories and strengthening the bonds that had been weakened by time and distance.

Back in the States, Aaron tried to focus on his own life, knowing that Cathy was more than capable of making her own decisions. He knew their path was dangerous and uncertain, but he also trusted that together they could face whatever came their way.
