Freyr's breath ghosted warmly against my shoulder, his body loose and peaceful in sleep. I should have been just as at ease, the night was calm, our defences strong, but something shifted in the air. A low, vibrating hum filled the room, beneath hearing. My instincts flared, and I opened my eyes. The chamber was bathed in silver, though the curtains remained drawn. A presence coalesced in the far corner, a ripple of silk and light pulling itself together until she stood there, radiant, and solemn: the Moon Goddess herself.
My heart kicked hard against my ribs, and I rose slowly, careful not to wake Freyr, and bowed my head.
"Goddess."
Her eyes ancient, shimmering, endless locked not on me, but on him. On Freyr. A wonder lit her face, softening her regal severity. "So, it is true," she whispered, her voice like the turning of tides. "The Mira home spoke, and I answered."
