Chapter 8 - Episode 8: Nickname

Light awkwardly laughed.

Scarn continued, "Yes, I did think you were a pirate at first, but I didn't notice the sword in your hand, so I decided I should just knock you out and then question you later. But after I bonked you in the head, you tried to swing your sword at me with that terrible form. If you were an actual pirate, my neck might have been sliced off, but all you did was cut my hat."

Light looked down and scratched the back of his head in embarrassment.

Scarn ignored Light and continued, "But after realising you have a sword, I was instantly ready to shoot you down. But just before I pulled the trigger, you half turned around and I saw the navy blue scarf on your neck, and also found your face to be familiar. So at the last moment before the shotgun blasted a hole through your head, I turned the barrel and pointed at your approaching sword instead.

Light sighed, "Thank god, and thank you, sir."

"Still, I used a shotgun, so I expected to see at least some wounds from the peripheral pellets on your face and hands. But you don't have a single wound on your body; in fact, you look as good as new. I could have sworn I saw you bleed from the face after I shot you. But I could've been mistaken, as it was deep into the dark night. Still quite incredible that hundreds of pellets travelling at the speed of a bullet missed your body completely."

He shook his head and replied, "Guess yesterday was my lucky day…"

'Luck and I haven't met since the day I was born. There is no way I wasn't riddled with dozens of holes yesterday.'

The lieutenant shook his head and laughed, "Well, you take rest for today. You must need some time to recover. I'll take the helmsman's role until then. From tomorrow, though, you shall have no rest."

As the officer got up, he saluted, "Stay strong, soldier!" Light repeated his salute and replied, "Yes, sir!"

After Lieutenant Jangwar Scarn left his room, Light deeply exhaled. 'Damn! that was stressful!'

He calmly walked to his bed and picked up the blanket. As he expected, hidden beneath the blanket were dozens of tiny iron balls—the pellets Lieutenant Scarn mentioned.

'So dozens of pellets did shoot into my body, and just like how the wound in my chest was healing, these bullet wounds healed too, and it seems like they excreted the pellets out of the body while I was asleep. Glad the lieutenant didn't stay to take care of me all night… that would've been an awkward experience, and my secret might have been revealed.'

Light waited for a while, then went outside the door and observed the hallway. Looking right and left, he saw many doors like his on both sides of the hallway—all empty. Light then went back inside his room and whispered.

"Hey Ryuk, are you here? Shhh! Wake up, I need your help."

[What is it bozo?]

Light gritted his teeth and tried to ignore the insults. "I wanted to ask you, how am I still healing from fatal wounds? Am I immortal? Wait, no… as this realm is outside the domain of death… does death just not exist here? Then how did all the other soldiers on this ship and the other naval ships die?"

[Too many questions.]

Light bit his lip in anger "You're the reason I'm stuck in this place in the first place, you could do the least and answer some questions."

Ryuk seemingly yawns. [Yeah, alright. Yes, you are definitely immortal. You should kill yourself NOW! Just to make sure you know.]

Light closed his eyes and did his thing with breathing to calm down. "Stop playing around!"

[You're no fun, man. No, of course you aren't immortal, it's just that the huge wound in your chest hadn't completely healed, so the power of the mysterious domain was continuing to heal it while also passively restoring your body. Any damage, including that of a shotgun, was going to be healed in that time span, and that time span only. So I guess in a way, for like half a day, you were actually immortal.]

Light nodded, "Yeah, that does make sense… what about the other questions?"

[Isn't it obvious, idiot? Just because this realm is outside the domain of death doesn't mean the power of death is non-existent here. Even though your human realm was inside the domain of death, life still existed in your world, right?]

Light continued nodding, "Yes, all of it makes sense now."

After that, he continued walking around his room and thinking about everything. Soon, he came to a stop and asked Ryuk another question. "If the power of death still exists here… does that mean I could still use the death note?"

He couldn't see Ryuk, but he could almost subconsciously feel him grinning, [Maybe, maybe not.]

Annoyed, he insisted. "Come on, when are you going to stop being an edgelord and just be like a guide or something, isn't that what your purpose is supposed to be?"

Ryuk laughed, [Haha! You wish, brat.]

He sighed, "Then tell me what I must do to get your help, genuine help, not the sarcastic kind."

He again felt Ryuk's smirk growing wider, [Sure, I'll help you. But my help comes with a price.]

Light felt a chill run down his backbone after hearing those words.

'Why does this kind of sound like a deal with the devil?'

Light waited for a second, then replied while acting nonchalant, "What price?"

[It's quite simple, really, put on a show. Entertain me, and if you are fun enough, we might find ourselves a deal.]

"Huh, you are asking a price to even consider making a deal, what kind of scam is this?"

[I could just go to sleep and never contact you again, you know.]

'Would that really be so bad?'

Light lingered for a bit and chose his words carefully, "Contact me? What now, is the death note you put into my soul similar to a mobile phone?"

[I guess for your puny mind, that's the best analogy one could make]

Light slowly grew a smirk of his own, "So does that make you Wifi Ryuk?"

[What is that? And I do not like that name.

"Okay, okay. So, how does Bluetooth Ryuk sound?"

[I will take my leave]

Light giggled incredibly.

"Alright, wait, about your price for the Death Note. You wanted a show, right?

"Watch me."
