Chapter 23: The Trial of Ysera
The circle was ancient—older than any kingdom, older than any map.
The wind wailed through the ring of stones, each pillar standing like a sentinel that had seen the birth and death of worlds. The silver plains around them pulsed softly under the starlight, which was eerily pale. It was as if the heavens themselves held their breath.
Aiden stepped forward, gripping the hilt of his blade. The others flanked him in silence, eyes locked on the masked figures before them. The robed sentinels moved like shadows, fluid and slow, cloaked in tattered black fabric and bound by bone-like chains.
One of them spoke again, his voice echoing unnaturally in the stillness:
"This is the cradle of judgment. Your hearts shall be weighed. Your fates measured."
Aiden drew his blade. "We don't want a fight."
"You do not choose. The Rift chose."
From the cracked earth between the stones, black mist burst like geysers. Creatures slithered forth, each one different: some were twisted beasts of flesh and bone, others shifting clouds of darkness with faintly glowing eyes. They surrounded the group in seconds.
Lumi squeaked, hopping into Aiden's cloak. Even she was scared.
Selene held her staff steady, murmuring incantations. Kael cracked his knuckles, smirking despite the fear in his eyes. Lyra held her twin daggers, crouched low, reading the battlefield.
The masked figure raised a hand.
"Begin."

The Trial Begins
Aiden charged forward, blade slicing through a mistbeast. It dissolved with a shriek, but two more rose in its place. Selene cast a wave of fire that curled like a phoenix, burning the creatures into ash, yet the flames faltered near the center of the ring—as if something was suppressing their magic.
"They're endless!" Kael shouted, smashing his fists into the ground, causing a shockwave that scattered nearby enemies.
But the mist kept reforming. The creatures regenerated faster than they could kill them.
Aiden backed toward the center, his breathing ragged. His pendant pulsed.
The ground trembled.
Suddenly, Lumi—still trembling—leapt from Aiden's shoulder. She scurried to the center of the ring and sat down.
"Lumi, no!"
But she just... stared upward.
Then it happened.
A faint hum rose in the air. A gentle blue glow emerged from beneath the silver dust. The center stone cracked open, revealing an ancient emblem—the same shape hidden under Aiden's pendant.
The masked figures paused. For the first time, they looked... uncertain.
One whispered: "It reacts to him... the light still remembers."
The mist froze. The beasts began to retreat, folding into the shadows like vanishing smoke.
A single masked sentinel stepped forward, removing his bone mask.
He was young. Pale. His eyes looked like he hadn't slept in a thousand years.
"You have passed. Not by strength. But by resonance."
He approached Aiden and pressed a silver shard into his hand. It shimmered, revealing a constellation that didn't exist on any known star chart.
"Follow this. The First Key has awakened."
He leaned closer.
"But beware the one who walks with borrowed time."
With that, the sentinels dissolved into mist.

Aftermath
They collapsed around the glowing center. No one spoke for a long time.
Lyra was the first to laugh—dry and shaken. "I thought we were dead."
Kael nodded. "Me too. But what the hell just happened?"
Selene studied the constellation. "It's a path. To somewhere ancient. Somewhere lost."
Aiden watched Lumi, who now curled in his lap.
"She saved us... again."
No one noticed the small glyph glowing faintly on Lumi's forehead.
The stars above shifted again, as if aligning.
The journey was far from over.
It had just begun.
