Chapter 14: Whispers of the Forgotten Woods

---

The forest was alive with a symphony of whispers. Every leaf that swayed in the golden twilight, every soft rustle of hidden creatures, seemed to carry secrets of an ancient world lost to time. The heavy, humid air wrapped around Aiden like a cloak as he and his companions continued their slow, cautious journey deeper into the Forgotten Woods.

Their mission was simple yet daunting: to explore the ruins that Master Oryn had cryptically mentioned and search for anything that could give them a clue about their marks, their purpose — or the truth behind the mysterious year "0169" whispered in forgotten places.

The path was overgrown and riddled with roots, some gnarled like twisted hands reaching from the earth. The towering trees, their bark glistening like dark stone, stretched endlessly into the sky, their canopies so thick that only slivers of light trickled through.

The further they walked, the stranger things became.

"I don't like this..." Elise muttered, her voice barely above a whisper. Her sharp eyes darted from shadow to shadow.

"We're not turning back," Aiden said, gripping the old, wooden staff he'd started carrying. "Master Oryn said the answers we seek are beyond the 'sleeping woods.'"

Ronan, ever the stoic one, simply nodded, his sword ready at his side. Selene walked a little behind, her keen sense of smell picking up faint traces of something... unnatural. Even little Lumi, Aiden's newly bonded white monkey, was unusually quiet, perched on Aiden's shoulder, his four tails swaying anxiously.

The mark on Aiden's hand pulsed faintly every few steps, as if guiding them deeper into the heart of the forest.

---

A Trail of Echoes

Hours passed. The deeper they went, the more the forest seemed to... hum. Not a sound of birds, no insects, no signs of life — only that deep, throbbing hum that vibrated through the ground, the trees, and their bones.

Suddenly, they stumbled upon stone markers along the path, worn and crumbling but unmistakably crafted by hands — ancient hands. Strange symbols carved into the stones glowed faintly with a soft azure light, the same hue that sometimes danced around Lumi.

"What do you think these are?" Selene asked, tracing her fingers across one of the carvings.

Aiden stared hard at them. The symbols felt oddly familiar, like fragments of a dream he couldn't remember.

"They're warnings," Ronan said darkly. "Old magic warnings."

Lumi let out a tiny, worried trill.

Just then, the voice from their marks stirred again — a deep, echoing murmur inside their minds:

> "Only those who bear the mark may pass. The lost sanctuary lies beyond the Veil of Whispers. Trust not the illusions."

Aiden froze. "Did you all hear that?"

Three heads nodded.

Illusions.

Veil of Whispers.

Lost Sanctuary.

What lay ahead would not be what it seemed.

---

The Veil of Whispers

The trees thickened to such an extent that the path was almost indistinguishable. Fog began to creep in, clinging to their feet, swirling in ghostly patterns.

"Stay close," Aiden ordered.

They pressed forward, hearts pounding, until the trees abruptly opened into a wide clearing.

At the center stood what appeared to be a small, crumbling temple — circular in shape, built from stone blackened by time and overgrowth. Vines coiled around shattered columns. Faint lights — orbs of pale blue — floated lazily in the air around it.

Elise took a cautious step forward—and instantly, the ground around her seemed to ripple.

"Wait!" Selene shouted, pulling her back.

Where Elise had stepped, a mirror image of the temple shimmered into existence — except this one was pristine, beautiful, untouched by time. Golden banners fluttered from tall spires. Statues of unknown deities lined the entrance.

"It's an illusion," Aiden breathed. "Just like the voice warned."

But why create such an illusion? To lure intruders into traps? To protect something precious?

They had to move carefully.

---

Into the Temple

Deciding to trust their instincts — and Lumi, whose tails twitched when they neared certain paths — they wove through the illusions, moving toward the real, ruined temple.

The entrance was a yawning black mouth, swallowing the last of the daylight. As they stepped inside, the air grew even heavier, thick with the scent of old stone and something... else.

A presence.

The stone walls inside were covered in mosaics — vivid scenes of battles, celebrations, and strange rituals. In one mosaic, four figures stood beneath a blinding star, each bearing a different mark on their hand.

Aiden stared at it, his heart hammering in his chest.

It looked eerily similar to them.

Was it a prophecy? A record of the past? Or... something else?

He didn't have time to ponder, because the ground suddenly trembled.

---

Trial of the Guardians

From the shadows of the temple, guardian beasts emerged — enormous, ancient stone creatures shaped like wolves, dragons, and lions, their eyes glowing blue.

"They're protecting something!" Elise shouted, drawing her twin daggers.

"But we can't destroy them!" Aiden yelled. "Look at the carvings — we have to pass their trial!"

The guardians didn't attack blindly. They stood in defensive stances, as if waiting for something.

Understanding clicked.

"We have to show them!" Aiden raised his hand, his mark glowing brighter.

One by one, the others did the same.

The beasts growled, the ground vibrating under their massive paws. Then, a single wolf-shaped guardian lunged—not toward Aiden, but toward Ronan.

Ronan reacted instinctively, clashing swords with the beast. But unlike a normal fight, the beast didn't seek to kill — it tested his strength, his will.

And when Ronan stood firm, refusing to back down, the wolf guardian bowed and dissolved into mist.

The trial had begun.

---

Awakening Power

Each of them faced a beast.

Elise battled a panther guardian, her agility and quick thinking tested. Selene clashed with a serpent, forced to rely on her instincts and connection to the natural world.

And Aiden…

Aiden faced the largest of them all — a lion-like creature made of obsidian and fire.

He was outmatched in strength, skill, and speed.

He fell hard, bruised and bleeding, but refused to yield. Lumi screeched from the sidelines, hopping anxiously.

When Aiden finally closed his eyes and trusted in the strange new world — letting the mark guide him — a soft pulse of power flowed through him.

For a moment, the blue light that usually flickered harmlessly around Lumi flared — not as a weapon, but as a protective shield. It washed over Aiden, strengthening him just enough to parry the beast's final blow.

The lion guardian rumbled approvingly... and bowed.

Aiden sank to his knees, exhausted but victorious.

---

Deeper Secrets

When the last guardian dissolved, the stone altar at the center of the temple cracked open with a deep groan, revealing a staircase spiraling downward into darkness.

Without hesitation, they descended.

At the bottom, they found it — a small pedestal, upon which sat a shard of crystal, swirling with memories and voices not of their world.

Inscribed around it were words in an ancient tongue.

Selene, reading carefully, translated:

> "To find the truth, one must understand the past. The Forbidden Era was never destroyed. It merely... sleeps."

And beneath that:

> "Seek the Gate of Thorns. Beyond it lies the origin of all echoes."

Aiden clenched his fists.

The journey was far from over. If anything, it had only just begun.

They had to find the Gate of Thorns.

And somewhere, hidden in the tangle of mysteries and lies, waited the answer to the true nature of the marks, the year 0169… and the future they were meant to protect.
