"At first, we thought the place where the duel took place was set in the past, but that's not the case. There were no monsters like these in the past, and the places you've seen have never existed on Earth.
The dungeons you get teleported to also seem to be part of the same place where the duels happen."
She took a little pause again.
"After you accept the duel, your body is teleported. If you win, you're sent back to the same place you left — but only if it's safe, so you don't end up trapped in rubble if the building you left from has collapsed.
It's rare, but sometimes the monster can escape the duel before you're teleported, while you're still in the dark expanse we call the Void, and kill you. This can only happen if the monster's rank is extremely high, and only a few such incidents have ever been recorded"
After she finished talking, as if trying to remember if she had forgotten something, someone from the stairs spoke up and asked:
"What about the Curses"
She smiled at the young guy and answered:
"Ah yes, thank you for reminding me. Some people are unfortunate enough to receive a curse. Each one is unique, and sometimes they can limit our abilities."
After that, another voice called out from the stairs:
"How do we receive remnants?"
She seemed to be enjoying herself, answering questions without showing any signs of tiredness.
"There are only two known ways to receive a remnant for now. The first is by using a weapon that has enchantments on it — meaning it was made in the place you get teleported to, by someone who knew how to imbue weapons with enchantments. To awaken a weapon and receive it as a remnant, you need to kill a monster of the same rank or higher than the weapon itself. If the remnant is a tool, it will awaken if you use that tool to kill the monster. There's also a chance that the weapon will receive a new enchantment from the monster you killed. The strength of that enchantment will depend on the monster's rank.
The other way is to simply kill a monster — in which case there's a small chance the system will reward you with a remnant. There have also been few cases where gods themselves bestowed remnants upon hunters after battles that were nearly impossible to win. In those cases, the system acted as a messenger, delivering the weapons granted by the gods."
After some more talking, Beth was finally done explaining almost everything that was necessary to them.
Sola was trying to digest all of this information, his head hurting.
Beth then decided to ask everyone which gods mark they had individually.
Sola was deep in thought and didn't realize it was his turn. Beth was trying to get his attention when someone sitting nearby said something that snapped him out of it instantly.
"He has a Moon God's mark on him"
Sola looked in the direction the sound came from. It was a girl with long ginger hair, tied into two ponytails. She had a serious expression on her face.
"How do you know"
She answered without looking at him.
"I saw the tattoo on your naked body yesterday"
She realized that the wording she chose was really bad and everyone was looking at her weirdly.
"No, he was not completely naked he had pants on. he was also there we were not alone"
She pointed her finger at Edric.
And made the situation worse.
Everyone, including Teacher Beth, looked at them with a slight frown.
About one-fourth of the students had a physical mark on them.
Sola only remembered the ginger girl's War God's mark and Edric's Nature God's mark.
Apart from them, there were those who were blessed by the Sun, Sea, and Knowledge Gods.
After everyone was finished teacher Beth started talking again.
"As far as we know, there are six marks that come from the gods, but there is one other, said to come from something still unknown. No human has ever been seen with it, but according to the accounts of hunters who ventured into the unknown world, people there speak of a seventh mark. Though unproven, it is said to be a mark bestowed by an evil deity upon those who defy the gods and commit terrible deeds. Wherever the bearer of that mark walks, misfortune and ruin are sure to follow, and it is said one should never make an enemy of them. The mark which is always on their face is described as a skull with an open jaw, with flowers sprouting from within it"
Silence fell in the room.
"Anyways I will teach you how to defend yourselves and how to use marks"
Sola was still deep in thought. He was thankful that the mark on his forehead had disappeared, because if it hadn't, who knew what might have happened to him.
Teacher Beth asked everyone if they wanted to fight, they could have a few matches with wooden swords, and she would point out the mistakes they made to the others so they wouldn't repeat them, and demonstrate the correct way.
Everyone was silent for a second but then Friede, the ginger girl with freckles came up.
Beth asked if anyone wanted to fight her but there was no response.
"Only an idiot would challenge someone with a War God's mark to a physical fight with swords"
Right as Edric whispered that into Sola's ear, he stood up and slowly walked towards where she and Beth were standing.
Freide had a pleased expression on her pretty face, as if she was satisfied with her opponent.
They both took a sword and stood in a fighting position. The room was very quiet.
you could only hear the whispers of other students.
Beth stood between them.
She looked at both of them and said:
"Don't be afraid to hurt each other, we have healers. But don't go too far. When I give you the signal to stop fighting, you will stop."
Sola realized that the last sentence was directed at Freide, as if telling her not to go too hard on him and to stop when instructed. It was probably because he was holding the sword with one hand, while she was using both.
He grinned.
The girl in front of him had a serious expression on her face, though the wooden sword covered the middle of her face up to her nose.
Beth started walking away from them to give some space while saying:
"Remember, before you learn how to awaken your mark on command, it happens when you are in desperate need of help or when you've reached your limit."
After that the room went dead silent and even the whispers stopped.
Only thing sola could hear was his heart beating loudly.
"Fight!"
