Chapter 50 - Danger in the Shadows

As Jason passed by the shelf, a zombie hiding underneath suddenly grabbed his foot, scaring him so badly he almost lost his soul. After all, there had been no sound beforehand—no warning at all. No one could have withstood such a sudden attack.

Phew!

Without hesitation, Jason thrust his long knife through the shelf, piercing the zombie's head and pinning it to the ground.

After dealing with the zombie, Jason quickly checked his leg and found no scratches.Relieved, he exhaled deeply. If he had been scratched by that damn zombie, it would have been game over for him.

"What happened?" Rick called out, hurrying over with the others after hearing the commotion.

Jason waved his hands and smiled lightly. "Nothing. Just a small zombie. I've already taken care of it."

From that point on, Jason and the others moved with greater caution. Some zombies were hiding behind the collapsed shelves, lying in wait. These creatures seemed to be lurking, ready to ambush anyone careless enough to get close.

They spent a good amount of time searching the supermarket.Fortunately, they found the tools they needed and loaded up on daily supplies, completing their mission for the moment.

"It looks like a lot of people have been here before," Jason said thoughtfully.

Leaning against the car door, he lit a cigarette and stared at the shattered glass of the supermarket."The glass broke from the middle," he analyzed. "That suggests it was smashed from the outside. Plus, the edges of the broken glass look like they were hit with a fire axe. I doubt a zombie could do that."

At the same time, Jason noticed something critical. It had rained yesterday, yet there were muddy footprints inside the supermarket—and footprints near the door of the shop next to it as well.

Someone had clearly tried to kick open the neighboring door and, failing that, had smashed through the supermarket glass instead.

After listening to Jason's analysis, Rick hurried over to check. Sure enough, there were footprints.

"Your observation skills are amazing," Rick said, giving Jason a big thumbs-up."If you hadn't pointed it out, none of us would have noticed. We weren't even thinking about stuff like that."

Jason smiled faintly. With his sharp eyes and tracking skills, if he couldn't notice such things, then what good were those skills?

After gathering everything they needed, Jason and the group were preparing to leave—when suddenly, Jason caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye.

"Someone!" Jason shouted.

It had only been a brief flash, but he was certain. He immediately signaled to the others, drew his weapon, and scanned the surroundings warily.

He was absolutely sure—it was a human.Zombies didn't move that fast, and they definitely didn't hide.

"Where?!" Glenn asked nervously, gripping his gun tightly and looking around like a headless chicken, but he didn't see anything.

"Over there."Jason pointed toward the far side of the supermarket. The figure had been hiding behind a wall, but by now, they had disappeared.

"Let's go, or—" Rick started to say.

But before he could finish, an accident happened.

Jason, still alert, spotted a man appear on the roof—and the stranger was aiming a gun right at them.

"Be careful!" Jason shouted.

Unfortunately, Rick and the others reacted a second too late.

Bang!Bang!

Two shots rang out.Rick screamed in pain as a bullet struck his shoulder. At the same time, Jason fired back with his shotgun, hitting the attacker in the upper body. The man toppled off the roof, crashing to the ground below. His body twitched violently as blood pooled around him.

"Get inside!" Jason yelled.

Supporting the wounded Rick with one arm and pushing a dazed Glenn ahead of him, Jason led the group into the nearby house.Henry, covering his ears, ran in right behind them.
