Chapter 15 - The Trial of the Monolith

The chamber shuddered to life, the towering monolith at its center pulsing with an energy unlike anything Kael Thorn had encountered before. The obsidian walls trembled, their intricate runes shifting, rearranging themselves into new sequences—messages written in the language of a civilization that had once ruled eternity.

Kael felt the shard in his grasp flare, its glow growing stronger in response to the monolith's awakening. It wasn't just reacting—it was resonating.

Behind him, Liana Sevier braced herself, gripping her blade tightly. She had seen enough of these trials to know that nothing remained dormant for long.

"Kael, I have a bad feeling about this," she muttered.

Kael didn't take his eyes off the monolith. "It's a test," he said calmly. "Just like before."

Liana shook her head. "No. This is different."

She was right.

Because this time, the trial wasn't just about strength—it was about knowledge.

And failure meant more than death.

A Challenge Written in Stone

The runes across the monolith flared, and suddenly—the chamber changed.

The air grew heavier, thick with ancient energy. The walls expanded, stretching into impossible distances, forming a space that defied logic. The ground beneath Kael and Liana fractured, revealing streams of luminous energy flowing like rivers of liquid fire.

Then, the voice came.

It was not spoken aloud—it resonated in Kael's mind, a symphony of voices layered over one another, speaking in a language he shouldn't have understood—but somehow, did.

"The Eternals were architects of knowledge. They preserved truths beyond the reach of time. If you seek the path forward, prove that you are worthy of understanding."

Liana hissed under her breath. "Great. A puzzle."

Kael grinned, excitement flickering in his eyes.

"A test of knowledge," he murmured. "Not just power."

He turned toward the monolith, scanning the shifting runes, feeling the shard's whispers guiding him.

This was it.

The trial of intellect.

And Kael intended to pass.

Let the Trial Begin

Just as Kael stepped forward, the monolith erupted—its surface splintering into countless floating fragments , each marked with ancient symbols. The chamber trembled, and from the luminous veins in the ground, shadowed figures emerged.

Unlike the guardians before, these were different.

They did not attack.

Instead, they watched.

Waiting.

Liana shifted her stance. "They're not moving."

Kael wasn't listening. His focus was entirely on the symbols, on the way they glowed, shifting between patterns that he knew held significance.

"This is a sequence," he murmured.

Liana frowned. "Kael, don't just stand there—what if this thing decides we're unworthy and turns us into dust?"

Kael's smirk deepened. "Then I guess I'd better figure it out before that happens."

Deciphering Eternity

Kael closed his eyes, letting the shard's energy weave into his thoughts, aligning him with the monolith's shifting runes. He reached out, tracing his fingers along the glowing fragments, matching patterns, reconstructing the message hidden within them.

The voices in his mind grew stronger, layering upon one another, whispering fragments of truth:

A civilization lost. A knowledge forbidden. A secret buried within eternity itself.

And then—Kael saw it.

The correct sequence.

He moved quickly, placing his hands on the floating shards, aligning the symbols into their rightful order. The moment he completed the pattern—

The chamber roared.

A shockwave erupted outward, sending Liana stumbling back, forcing the shadowed figures to retreat into the glowing veins beneath the floor.

The monolith stabilized, its runes now fixed, forming a single glowing inscription.

Kael read it aloud:

"Knowledge is power, but understanding is eternity."

Liana caught her breath, shaking her head. "You solved it."

Kael exhaled, the shard's whispers settling into a soft hum. "Of course, I did."

The Path Forward

The chamber *shifted once more* , revealing a *new passage* , the air beyond it *charged* with unseen energy.

Kael turned to Liana. "Are you ready for the next step?"

She sighed, rolling her shoulders. "Do I have a choice?"

Kael smirked, stepping into the passage. "Not really."

As they moved forward, the shard pulsed in Kael's grip, and he knew—

This was only the beginning.
