Chapter 7 - Chap 7 Upgrade

Inside the RV The children sat on the couch as Max stood in front of us and lectured.

"Ben!, the only thing i asked you was to not fool around with the watch, until we know what the heck it is."

"Sorry Grandpa," Ben hung his head, guilt written all over his face. While Gwen sat with her iconic smug smile, watching him suffer.

"But at least i figured out how this thing works" Ben continued his face lighting up,

"all you do is press this button, then when the ring pops up, just twist it until the guy you wanna be, slam it down and Bammo" he explained while mimicking the motions

"I am one of these super cool alien dudes," Rio continued his words.

"What about staying a super-cool alien dude and not transforming back into the plain old burger face Rio." Gwen remarked, pouring water on Ben's excitement.

Ben reverting back to his guilt face said "Well haven't figured out that part yet"

"With a Device as powerful as that watch clamped onto you Rio, my advice is we'd better help you learn, fast!" Max stroking his chin suggested, well knowing his past there no doubt he can't train Rio and the kids.

"Alright, Grandpa" Rio shouted "let's do it".

Just then the radio near them started to broadcast an emergency signal.

–Mayday, mayday–

–somebody help us! We are under attack by some sort of–

–I know you are not gonna believe me--but robots–

Soon it cut to a scream and static swallowed the signal.

Rio and Max exchanged a glance.

"Sounds like those things that attacked me, must be looking for the watch" Rio looked at Max as he said "Grandpa, it's hero time"

"Let's go and show them!" Ben declared, puffing out his chest like he was the one with superpower.

In response Max grabbed the RV keys from his pocket while nodding with a smile. "Buckle up, kids. We're moving fast."

The RV's engine roared to life as Max slammed the gear shift into drive. "Buckle up, kids. We're moving fast."

Ben lunged for the passenger seat, nearly tripping over Gwen's outstretched leg. "Whoa, whoa! Gwen, watch your legs!"*—catching himself by gripping the seatback. He asked, *"What if Rio turns into, like, a speedster alien? We could—"

"Ben." Max immediately shut him up. "No experimenting until we know what we're up against."

Outside, the trees blurred into streaks of green. Rio clutched the Omnitrix, its dial glowing faintly.

A new symbol pulsed under his palm—an alien with long and thick arms reaching its legs.

Gwen's eyes narrowed. "Uh, Rio? You're not doing the thing again, right?"

A shrill beep cut through the cabin, confirming her guess.

BEEEP!

The Omnitrix's core flashed blue as an ink-black substance oozed from the watch, swallowing Rio's fingers, then his wrist, crawling upward like a living shadow. Beneath it, his skin flickered with lines of electric blue.

The light flashed, and Rio's form dissolved. Where he'd sat, a quivering puddle of black sludge spread across the seat, its surface filled with glowing blue lines. Then—

The puddle convulsed. A torso surged upward, limbs elongating like stretched rubber, until a sleek, ink-dark figure loomed over them. At its center, where a face should be, a single, unblinking blue eye stared, with blue lining all over its body.

The RV made a turn over a pothole as Max jerked the wheel. "Rio? You still in there?"*

The creature tilted its head. Then Rio's voice came from it—but layered with radio static, dripping with reverb: "I-I think so? Feels like... I'm underwater. But also... everywhere?"

Gwen prodded the puddle with her pencil. It jiggled, then absorbed it. "Okay, this is new."

She eyed the creature's dripping body. "Rio, can you control this? Or are we hauling a sentient The Splish-Splash Sludge! to the next stop?"

The blue eye narrowed—almost amused. The puddle then rippled, and a second eye split open beside the first.

"Uh," said Rio, his blue line eye lighting up as he did so. "Definitely option two."

"So what can you do with this thing?" Gwen asked.

"You'll see." Rio's sludge form moved, his glowing blue eye-locking onto the RV's dashboard. "Okay, guys! Hang onto something."

Before anyone could react, his inky body surged forward, splashing across the steering wheel, the gearshift, and the pedals—covering the whole RV. The Omnitrix symbol flashed on the windshield as wires and circuits rewired themselves under Rio's control. The engine roared louder.

"Whoa—!" Ben was nearly thrown back as the RV's speed doubled in a heartbeat. Soon, the seats molded themselves around them, and seatbelts sprang out to lock everyone in place.

Gwen gripped the armrests as the RV's interior flickered, panels shifting from dull beige to sleek black and blue. "Rio, what did you do?!"

Rio's voice echoed through the speakers, staticky. "Just some upgrades."

Outside, the trees blurred into streaks. The steering wheel moved on its own, Max's hands hovering awkwardly as the RV took sharp turns.

Reaching the campsite, the RV lunged left, tires screeching as it took the curve on two wheels.

Ben nearly vomited. "Since when do RVs drift?!"

The sludge rippled, forming a crude smile across the windshield. "Since I became one."

Kicking up a storm of dust and gravel, the RV came to a sudden stop.

Rio separated from the RV, his alien form slowly coming out of the dashboard.

Max was the first out, followed by Ben and Gwen.

In the campsite, a red, four-legged robot was making a mess—firing lasers, destroying vehicles, and causing fires. Causing People to run everywhere in chaos.

The design of this robot was the same as the small robots that Rio had defeated in the woods, but this one was way bigger compared to them.

Everywhere they looked, wreckage filled the space—scattered metal, sparking wires, the half-melted, half-burning remains of various vehicles.

Soon, Rio also came out, with the parts left by the aliens swimming in his body.

"Grandpa, get the campers to safety," he said, his voice echoing with a metallic tone as he began absorbing the alien robot parts. "I'll handle this scrap heap.

Max nodded, taking Ben and Gwen toward the fleeing crowd.

Alone, Rio—now Upgrade—looked around, slowly moving forward in deliberate waves. Slithering over the broken machines, tendrils wrapped around shattered components, absorbing them into his mass.

Then—it changed.

His form convulsed, folding in on itself, compressing into a tall figure. Metal, wires, and all the components fused slowly—building from below, two heavy feet were made, followed by a torso, then arms, and then a head. Metal sheets covered his entire body, and two barrels shone with dark blue light in his palms.

When it finished, Rio stood as a towering robot—just like a transformer.

Soon enough, the attacking robot noticed Rio's transformation, pausing as its optic lens zoomed in, scanning him.

Noticing the Omnitrix symbol now on the transformed Rio-Robot's chest, it moved its claws, firing lasers at him.

SSS-BOOM!

Suddenly seeing the laser, Rio could do nothing but take it head-on.

The laser slammed into Rio, knocking him back three steps—but it didn't damage him.

-Okay,- he thought, -this form's tougher than I expected.-

The robot fired again. This time, Rio sidestepped, then immediately charged toward the robot, connecting his kick on the robot's leg, and destroying its balance.

The robot fell, its next shot firing uselessly into the sky.

Then, Rio leaped onto its back, his arms liquefying into cables that burrowed into its exposed wiring.

A surge of energy—Rio hacked into its systems. The robot froze, shuddering as its own lasers short-circuited internally.

With a final spark, it collapsed.

After taking care of the problem, Rio picked up the robot's body and jumped. In midair, his back transformed into two jet wings. With a roar of thrusters, he flew into the sky, the robot's remains dissolving into his body as he vanished into the clouds, leaving the crowd staring open-mouthed at the smoke trail.

In Space – Vilgax's Ship

Vilgax, still in his medical chamber, looked at the happenings on Earth done by his robot and was fuming with anger.

"Failure? Unbelievable!" Taking a deep breath, he continued, "The puny Earth being that is keeping the Omnitrix from me will soon hang on my trophy wall."
