Chapter 6 - Chapter 06 – A Gentle Touch, Interrupted by Cosmic Trouble

The surprising part for Haruno was how quickly sleep claimed him. He'd only meant to rest for ten, maybe fifteen minutes—just enough to recharge before heading to Class 1-A. He was itching to see who his classmate-heroine would be.

Would it follow the classic To LOVE-Ru route? Or would it be something wilder, like those crossover fanfics where every anime girl imaginable ended up in the same school? With one hundred soulmates destined to fall for him, there was no way a single series could cover them all.

That thought alone made his heart race. A school life filled with iconic heroines across worlds? Yeah, he was definitely looking forward to this. Eyes closing, smile tugging at his lips, Haruno drifted into sleep with dreams of chaotic romance dancing through his head.

Either Ryouko was right about him being sleep-deprived, or the encounter with that god-like being really did mess with his mental state more than he realized. Maybe it was fate again—or something even less scientific—that nudged him into staying in the infirmary longer than planned. Haruno had barely closed his eyes when sleep swept him away, deeper than he'd expected.

Ryouko, standing nearby, couldn't help but watch him for a moment. His expression had softened in sleep, all the nerves and excitement of earlier washed away, leaving behind a peaceful, almost boyish face.

"…How cute," she whispered, smiling faintly as she brushed a strand of hair from his forehead. "Sleep well, Haruno-kun."

Whatever strange force had brought them together, she decided she didn't mind if he stayed just a little longer. Quietly, she adjusted the curtain and returned to her desk, letting him rest in peace for another hour or so.

As a school nurse, Ryouko sometimes let students rest even when they weren't seriously ill. A little break now and then never hurt anyone. But this time… it wasn't professional judgment guiding her decision—it was personal. She had never let someone stay simply because she wanted them close.

Thankfully, this part of the school year was quiet. No sick students. No interruptions. Just the soft ticking of the clock, and Haruno's peaceful breathing from behind the curtain.

Every so often, she stood from her desk, peeked past the divider, and found herself smiling without even realizing it.

"What am I doing…?" she thought, watching him sleep. "He's just a student… But then again, this feeling… it's too strange to ignore."

She gently tapped the tip of his nose with her finger, just once, then pulled back with a soft laugh. "Seriously, why is he so cute when he sleeps…?"

Then she returned to her desk, only to repeat the same routine a few minutes later—unable to resist the strange warmth blooming in her chest.

Even sweet, peaceful moments had to end eventually.

Just as the hour Ryouko had mentally allowed Haruno to rest began drawing to a close, a sudden knock echoed at the infirmary door.

"Excuse me… Mikado-sensei, I don't feel so good," came a voice from outside—weak, yet oddly monotonous.

Ryouko turned her head, eyebrows furrowing. "It's fine. You can come in," she called out, already feeling something was off.

The door creaked open, and a student stepped in—one she didn't immediately recognize. His uniform was correct, and his appearance matched a typical teenager, but something about his expression and posture screamed unnatural. Her sharp instincts, honed through years of dealing with both humans and aliens, instantly kicked in.

"That aura… he's not just sick. He's not even human, is he?" she thought.

Ryouko kept her smile, but her eyes darted briefly toward the curtain shielding Haruno. She couldn't risk exposing him.

"I don't know who you are," she said calmly, her voice cool and measured, "but I can't perform a check-up here for... special cases. If you're really unwell, I have a clinic in town that's better suited. I'll help you there."

The "student" didn't move. He simply repeated, in the same tone, "Sorry, Mikado-sensei… I don't feel good."

That sent a chill down her spine.

"He's stalling," she realized. "Something's wrong. He knows Haruno's here."

Ryouko's fingers subtly reached for the emergency alert hidden beneath her desk. Her gaze sharpened, her smile gone. "I'm giving you one chance," she said, her voice now laced with warning. "Leave this room—now—or I'll make you leave."

The impostor tilted his head slightly… and smiled. But there was nothing human about that smile.

This situation was far from ideal.

Ryouko could feel the tension crawling beneath her skin, like a cold wire tightening around her nerves. This wasn't just a sick student wandering in—this was something else entirely. Dangerous, and wrong.

"Damn it… I should've been more careful. If it's really one of them, then Haruno—"

She didn't finish the thought. Her eyes flicked toward the curtain shielding the boy, and just as she did, she heard the faintest rustle.

Haruno was already awake.

He didn't know why he stirred, but a deep, instinctual discomfort pulled him from sleep. It was as if something inside him screamed that Ryouko—his soulmate—was in danger. Her voice, firm yet tense, drifted through the curtain. Someone was there, and something about them felt... wrong.

'This wasn't in the original To-Love-Ru…' Haruno thought, still groggy but alert. 'I don't remember anything like this happening in the story. But I guess that makes sense. This world isn't a perfect replica. I'm here. And that god definitely stirred the pot when they granted my wish.'

He sat up quietly, careful not to make a sound. Every step felt deliberate, as if walking through a dream he couldn't afford to wake up from.

'Soulmates in 100 Girlfriends… they have their own issues, sure. But those were romcom-level problems. Embarrassment, misunderstanding, personal baggage. This? This feels like an assassin from a sci-fi action movie is about to drop into our lives.'

Then he remembered the one terrifying rule of that world: If a soulmate's love isn't fulfilled… they suffer. They die.

His chest tightened.

'I just met her. But already, I... I don't want to see her hurt.'

And then, a second thought struck him—sharp and urgent.

'Ryouko isn't just some pretty teacher. She's a fugitive from Solgam. Someone who escaped from a shadowy alien organization bent on galactic domination. She's probably made a hundred enemies I don't even know about. And now one of them's come knocking.'

The voice on the other side of the curtain repeated itself again. Monotone. Soulless.

Haruno clenched his fist.

'This isn't just a romcom anymore…'

It was something much bigger.

Something real.

Ryouko subtly stepped between the intruder and the curtain, her posture calm, but her eyes sharp with warning.

"If you're really not feeling well, I can guide you to my other clinic after school," she said smoothly, voice laced with steel beneath the kindness.

I need to get him out of here… away from Haruno. Her fingers itched toward the emergency button under her desk, hidden beneath a pile of neatly stacked reports—just in case things went south faster than she could talk her way out.

The student—no, the thing wearing a student's face—kept repeating the same phrase like a broken record.

"Sorry, Mikado-sensei… I don't feel good."

But this time, the words came faster, more strained, as if the mask it wore was starting to crack. Its movements grew erratic—shoulders twitching, fingers flexing unnaturally, like it was struggling to maintain its form. Ryouko narrowed her eyes, shifting her stance subtly, ready to act at any moment.

Behind the curtain, Haruno clenched his fists under the blanket, fully awake now. This isn't just a romcom anymore, he thought grimly. This is my story now—and I won't let anything happen to her.
