I'm writing this to explain why I gave Thorne Beta-level abilities.
As seen in the previous chapter, when the MC was born, he created a magical maelstrom. He was born with these abilities because they are part of his magical core, not separate mutations that take time to awaken. Think of it like him performing accidental magic—but on a far greater scale—and the world reacting to an unfamiliar magical force.
If I had given him Alpha or Omega-level abilities, the storm would have been hundreds or even thousands of times more powerful. That kind of magical eruption would've easily alerted powerful beings and institutions across the magical world. Not to mention, if I made him an Omega-level mutant from the start, he'd already be one of the strongest—there would be no tension, no room to grow.
Now, the reason I gave him what seem like "basic" abilities is because, at Beta level, these powers can help him grow much faster than most flashy or combat-oriented mutations would.
Each of his powers—Telekinesis, Energy Manipulation, and Telepathy—are deeply tied to his magic. They're constantly active and trainable. Every time he uses one, it strengthens his magical energy pool and control. Essentially, these three abilities are like having three separate avenues of training, all of which feed back into increasing his magical power. Because they stem from the same magical source, mastering them will naturally boost his overall magical potential.
Telepathy is essential in a world where Legilimency exists. At Alpha level, telepathy could let him read multiple minds at once—that would be way too overpowered, especially in a world where minds are naturally more resistant due to ambient magical energy. At Beta level, he's limited to one person at a time, and initially even needs physical contact to use it. This keeps it grounded while still useful.
Telekinesis is a perfect choice. It lets him manipulate matter with his will alone. At high levels, it's practically matter manipulation. It also serves as a great form of practice for transfiguration, which I believe has massive potential in combat. Plus—let's be honest—it's always satisfying to chuck objects at your enemies and overwhelm them.
Energy Manipulation is self-explanatory. In this world, even the strongest archmages use wands—not because they need them, but because they enhance their magic. Say an archmage has a base magical output of 90; with a wand, it becomes 100. With something like the Elder Wand, it could even go up to 110. And this is at the top level. For less experienced wizards, the gap between using a wand and going wandless is even larger. Energy Manipulation helps Thorne eventually operate at 100 consistently, even without a wand—but only after years of practice.
So yeah, these three powers are all tied to his magic, and they all help him grow. They're not flashy like healing factor or shape shifting, but they work together and help him get stronger faster. And because they're balanced at Beta-level, he has to work hard to master them.
