Chapter 46 - Stop Being So Skittish

Feng Mingyu had inexplicably turned the atmosphere tense."Weren't you saying back in the car that you weren't afraid of ghosts?" Mo Lin asked, casting her a glance."I'm sorry... I won't pretend anymore."

Ordinarily, Feng Mingyu wasn't afraid of ghosts. She'd encountered them before—nothing too frightening. But things were always different when she was with Mo Lin.The ghosts they came across were always unnervingly horrific.

They had barely walked ten meters, and already she'd seen three piles of bleached bones. How could anyone not be afraid? It was the primal fear of death itself.

"I'll summon my contracted spirits to protect you. Just stop jumping at shadows," Mo Lin said calmly."Alright, alright..." Feng Mingyu nodded frantically, like a pecking chick.

"Chen Xi... Chu Xing..."Two ghostly figures slowly emerged—Nightmare-class spirits, both of them.

"A-Ah... T-This... This is..."So much for not freaking out—Feng Mingyu clearly hadn't taken his words to heart. Not only was she panicking again, she looked positively thrilled.

"What are you doing?" Mo Lin was speechless.Don't summon ghosts, and she panics.Summon them, and she still panics.Had he summoned them for nothing?

"It's not... I didn't mean to act like this..."It wasn't intentional. She was simply... too shocked.

Mo Lin had three contracted ghosts. She had assumed he only had two.Now she knew better—he had three.

And not just that—two of them were Nightmare-class.But the most unbelievable part... was the sheer number.

Three contracted spirits? That defied reason. Most people could form contracts with only two at most. How did Mo Lin have three?

Feng Mingyu was too stunned to control her reaction."How can you have three contracted ghosts?" she asked in disbelief.

"Look at you, all wide-eyed like you've never seen anything. It's just three ghosts. Can you not be so dramatic?" Mo Lin scoffed."Still... three... I guess..." Feng Mingyu muttered, still overwhelmed. It made no sense, but she had to accept it.

Three contracted ghosts it was.She was just an ordinary person—how could she understand?Still, she was envious. Painfully envious.

Two Nightmare-class spirits. The envy was real. She herself was only a second-rank Ghost Tamer. Her contracted ghost was a pitiful Danger-class—Worlds apart from Mo Lin's.

"Jealous?""Mhm..." Feng Mingyu nodded honestly.

"Give me some spirit coins, and I'll help you level up your ghost," Mo Lin said slowly."Really?"

Feng Mingyu burst with excitement. "How many spirit coins?""Ten thousand. I can elevate your ghost to the Perilous-class.""Deal! Thank you so much! I'll get you the spirit coins as soon as I'm back!"

Perilous-class—That meant a third-level ghost.Which meant she would become a third-level Ghost Tamer.Hahaha... just the thought thrilled her.

"Could you not be so jumpy?" Mo Lin said helplessly."Right, shutting up now!" Feng Mingyu clapped a hand over her mouth to keep quiet.

With two Nightmare-class ghosts nearby, she felt significantly less afraid.Mo Lin walked on ahead, and they soon reached a hillside.

He stopped and turned to her. "Stay here. No need to follow.""Okay," she nodded.

Mo Lin had sensed a terrifying ghost on the hilltop—At least above Nightmare level. The stronger the ghost, the more grotesque its form.

He could already picture Feng Mingyu's horrified expression if she saw it.So to spare both of them the scene, he left her behind.

Mo Lin left Chu Xing to guard Feng Mingyu, and took Chen Xi with him up the hill.

A cold wind swept through the slope, the temperature plummeting. His cheeks stung with the chill.

At the summit, he saw her—A woman standing alone, staring into the distance.

She slowly turned her head.Empty sockets where eyes should be, pus oozing from a decayed face. She wore only a sheer veil of cloth, her feet bare and rotting.

She hovered in the air.Mo Lin was instantly grateful he hadn't brought Feng Mingyu.

The ghost floated toward him."Hey... have you seen my clothes and shoes?"

"No... And you won't find them on me," Mo Lin replied.

Seeing his empty hands, she turned away and resumed gazing into the distance.

Name: Lady YuRank: Nightmare-classSkill:Cleave (Condenses ghostly energy into a lethal strike. Damage scales with the user's strength.)

Mo Lin liked this skill.Currently, he only had one offensive ghost skill: Soul Chain. He sorely needed another—and now, one had appeared.

He also needed more ghosts to upgrade his Ghost-Sealing Tome.Yet this one hadn't attacked him.

Mo Lin stepped forward and placed a hand on her head, trying to subdue her.

To his surprise, nothing happened. The suppression failed.Something that had never occurred before.

Then, at last, she spoke."Find my clothes and shoes, and I'll go with you."

Her voice was piercing.Mo Lin finally understood—The Ghost-Sealing Tome couldn't subdue her because she was resisting. Her obsession was too strong.

Unless that was resolved, she could not be tamed.

"Where are they?"He couldn't agree blindly—he needed to know at least the general location.

She pointed toward Yunchuan City. "Over there."As long as it was nearby, it was manageable.

"Alright. I'll help you find them. Now, get us out of here."

The moment he finished speaking, the surroundings shifted. The white mist dispersed.

Everything returned to normal—as though the ghost had never appeared.

Feng Mingyu was crouched on the ground, doodling in the dirt with a stick out of boredom.Seeing the mist vanish, she knew the situation had been resolved.

"Did you catch the ghost? What level was it?" she asked nosily."Didn't catch it," Mo Lin replied slowly.

"Huh? Then why did the mist disappear?""I agreed to do something for it, so it let us go," he said.

The moment he finished, he clamped a hand over her mouth."Don't shout."

He'd seen her about to exclaim and reacted just in time.

Feng Mingyu didn't scream, but her eyes still shone with disbelief. It was unfathomable—How could Mo Lin communicate with ghosts like that?

Under normal circumstances, ghosts didn't speak to humans.Only through a contract was communication possible.

Mo Lin never ceased to astonish her.She still remembered how utterly shaken she'd been the first time they met.
