Chapter 63 - The Masking Array

The lab hummed with energy as Emma and Lucas worked tirelessly amidst the glow of scavenged K'tharr artifacts. The masking array—an intricate network of alien technology—was their last hope of hiding Earth's WoodDust signature from the Void Leviathan. The air in the room carried a sense of urgency, heavy with the stakes of their endeavor.

"We're almost there," Lucas said, his brow furrowed in concentration as he adjusted a glowing panel. The faint light flickered across his grease-streaked face. "This array—it'll mask the WoodDust's energy. The Void Leviathan won't detect it."

Emma tightened a power conduit with deliberate precision. Her movements were steady despite the tension in her voice. "How long until it's ready?"

"A few hours," Lucas replied, though caution tinged his tone. "But we need to run diagnostics first."

Emma's voice hardened. "Let's do it now. We can't wait."

The lab door hissed open, and Aisha entered, her face pale, her posture stiff. "The Void Leviathan—it's at Saturn's orbit now," she said, her voice low but carrying the gravity of the situation. "And it's accelerating."

Markus stormed in after her, frustration radiating from his every movement. "We need to leave," he said, his tone sharp, cutting through the room's tense atmosphere. "Now, Emma. We can't fight this thing here."

Emma turned to face him, her stance unyielding. "We're not leaving until the array is up," she said firmly. "We're giving Earth a chance."

"You're gambling with all our lives," Markus shot back, his gray eyes blazing. "The Void Leviathan isn't a fleet we can outmaneuver. It's not something we can fight!"

"We're not fighting it," Emma countered, her voice calm but resolute. "We're hiding from it. This array will make Earth invisible to its sensors."

"And if it doesn't work?" Markus challenged, his voice dropping lower, the frustration crackling at the edges. "What then?"

Emma held his gaze, her tone unwavering. "Then we deal with it. But I am not abandoning Earth."

Markus exhaled sharply, his hands curling into fists. "You're going to get us all killed," he muttered before turning on his heel and leaving the room.

Lucas placed a hand on Emma's shoulder, his touch light, his expression measured. "You're doing the right thing," he said softly. "I believe in this—in us."

Emma's eyes softened as she glanced at him. "Thank you," she said quietly. "I couldn't have done this without everyone."

Lucas smiled faintly. "Probably, but I'm sure you would have"

The final connections snapped into place, and Emma activated the array. A low hum filled the lab, growing in intensity as the K'tharr tech came to life. Pulses of energy rippled through the panels, casting an eerie glow on the walls.

"It's working," Lucas said, relief flooding his voice as he checked the readings. "The signature—it's gone."

Emma exhaled, a rare smile breaking through the tension. "We did it," she said, feeling a flicker of hope ignite within her. "Earth's safe—for now."

But as the hum of the array stabilized, the storm on the horizon continued to darken. Violet lightning split the sky in jagged arcs, each strike pulsing in rhythm with the quickened beat of the WoodDust beneath the soil. Its restless hum seemed almost alive—a warning that no machine could mask.
