Walking along the sidewalk, Paola made her way to the closest bus stop that she could find. It took her at least 7 minutes to get there.
She sat on the bus stop bench and was patiently waiting for the next bus to arrive, because she missed the previous bus by only a few seconds.
If only she had shouted, the bus driver would have heard her and stopped the bus for her.
But she was not in the mood to do any of those.
Sitting straight on the bench, Paola's gaze was fixed in only one direction. Her face had become pale because of the rain that soaked her body in the morning.
'I hate all of this'. She thought to herself.
A few minutes of waiting and the next bus arrived. It was a blue bus, and it stopped in front of Paola, who began to contemplate whether she should enter the bus or not.
After all, it would not make much difference if she chose to die outside or die in her apartment.
The driver sounded his bus horn. The sound the horn made was loud and sharp.
Paola sighed in defeat. "Let's die in the apartment". She said to herself and rose from the bench, before entering the bus.
There was an empty seat, similar to the seat she had sat on the previous bus.
"Is fate mocking me now?". She said to herself and went to sit on the seat, ignoring the stares of the people who saw her talking to herself.
Despite her pale face, she opened the window, allowing the cold breeze to invade the bus and envelop her face and other parts of her body.
"I am soon going to die, and in this life, I have never dated anyone. Why is my life so pathetic?". She said to herself, not caring to lower the tone of her voice.
The man who was sitting behind Paola tapped her shoulder twice and held her shoulder, before asking her, "Young miss, are you sure you are alright? You have been talking to yourself ever since you got on the bus".
Paola chuckled, surprising the aged man. She turned to him after he had let go of her shoulder. She smiled at him, "Mister, I am more than okay. Actually, I am not only okay, but I am excited because of my life".
"Oh-".
"Yes, Mister. Thank you for caring about me". She said to him and stopped looking at him immediately, before looking outside the bus.
'You should ignore me and mind your own business'. She thought to herself.
…
The bus arrived at its final bus stop. And that happened to be Paola's stop too.
After getting out of the blue bus and walking along the sidewalk, on her way to her tiny apartment, Paola suddenly halted out of frustration.
She couldn't take it anymore. She couldn't endure it anymore. She finally snapped.
"Ugh!!!". The purse that was hanging around her neck, she removed it and threw it on the floor with an agonizing groan.
Her pale face, which had dark circles underneath her eyes, looked up at the sky, and pointing her right finger at the sky, she quarreled, "Are you having fun watching my pathetic life?! Huh?! Are you going to mock me like everyone else does?! I overheard everything my colleagues said about me behind my back! They said that I was a naive fool! They said that I was only a tool to them, meant to be used!".
"But is that fair?! It wasn't enough that my superiors always took credit for my hard work. But, the colleagues I thought of as my friends had also been taking advantage of me, and I only found out about that today! Every single damn time, they all came to me, behaving pitifully and begging me that I should help them resolve their own work issues, and I, as naive and foolish as I am, helped them out, despite the stress involved in it".
"I do not even remember the last time I had a good night's sleep! Why is this world so cruel to me?! Is it because I don't have any people to call my family?! Is it because I don't have parents?!". She yelled at the top of her lungs and held her chest tightly using her left hand.
The passersby stared at her and were muttering to themselves, "She must have gone crazy".
Yeah, she had gone crazy. Crazy because of her unfair life, that she didn't care at all if it all came to an end.
"What I would give to be the boss of my own life!". She yelled again, before she broke down crying and slowly sat down on the ground.
Her palms covered her face for a few seconds, not having a single clue that those few seconds would change her life for good.
"Watch out!!!". Someone screamed at her, but it was too late for her.
She removed her palms from her face and silently watched as a car drove recklessly towards her.
'See? My life is so pathetic. In the end, fate didn't even allow me to die peacefully in my apartment'. She thought to herself, before her body was crushed by the car.
Her body was drenched in blood and her body vibrated in pain. Agonizing pain.
People panicked and rushed towards her, surrounding her helpless body.
"Hurry, someone should hurry up and call 911 for her! My cell phone is not here with me!". Someone shouted, but Paola could feel it. It was already too late for her.
Additionally, she didn't want to be saved.
Paola's body felt extremely heavy, most especially her chest, and breathing felt like hell.
She wanted to cough out blood but was too weak to do that or move a muscle.
Slowly, her eyes that were slightly opened, gave up. And, her heart stopped beating.
