Chapter 85 - Shared Boredom

(Opening Scene: The spacious common room of Zane and Astrid's dorm feels quiet and somewhat isolating. Days have passed since the training ground incident, and the academy's new directives have limited their interactions with other students and live magical practice.)

Zane leaned against the window, gazing out at the flurry of magical activity on the grounds below. Students were engaged in various exercises, but a subtle distance seemed to be maintained whenever he or Astrid were nearby. The academy's caution, while understandable, had created a sense of being on the outside looking in.

Astrid sighed, tossing a textbook onto the plush sofa. "Another hour spent in theoretical study. I appreciate understanding the principles, but I'm itching to actually do something." Her usual vibrant energy seemed subdued by the enforced limitations.

Zane turned from the window, a similar restlessness stirring within him. The mystery of his negation ability and the academy's cautious reaction weighed on him. He longed for a distraction, a chance to feel like a normal student, even if just for a little while.

He looked at Astrid, a small smile forming on his lips. "Bored?"

Astrid raised an eyebrow. "Profoundly. I feel like a caged storm."

"Me too," Zane admitted. "Maybe we should… explore? See if there's anything interesting happening outside of the scheduled lessons."

Astrid's eyes lit up. "A little… unsanctioned exploration? I like the sound of that."

Hand in hand, they left their relatively luxurious but increasingly confining dorm room. The corridors were bustling with students moving between classes, but a noticeable hush fell over conversations as they passed. They ignored the curious glances and hushed whispers, their focus on finding some form of diversion.

They wandered through the academy, their fingers interlaced, a silent understanding passing between them. They peeked into classrooms where advanced students were practicing intricate spellwork, briefly observed a history lecture on ancient magical artifacts, and even found themselves near the enchanted greenhouses, filled with exotic and glowing flora.

However, the air of caution seemed to permeate everything, a subtle reminder of their unique circumstances. Even casual interactions with other students felt stilted, tinged with a mixture of curiosity and apprehension.

"This is… less exciting than I hoped," Astrid murmured after they had explored for some time. "Everyone seems to be walking on eggshells around us."

"Maybe we need to find somewhere… less regulated," Zane suggested, a hint of mischief in his eyes. "Somewhere the headmaster's directives might not reach so easily."

He recalled a rumor he had overheard about a hidden training area used by some of the more adventurous students, a place beyond the direct supervision of the faculty. A spark of an idea ignited within him. Perhaps a little unsanctioned exploration was exactly what they needed to shake off their boredom and the academy's watchful gaze.
