It was a rainy evening.
A woman around the age of twenty-five walked through the staircase, with the lights flickering on and off. She had long black hair and deep blue eyes like sapphire. Her body was quite athletic. She walked towards a partially open door and entered the room.
Inside, a man sat, drunk and wearing almost nothing.
The place was a mess and smelled awful.
The man had black hair and glasses that hid his eyes. His beard and mustache were untrimmed, and his large, fat body looked unattractive.
Noticing someone enter the room, the man pointed a gun toward the figure—only to realize it was Rin Hanashi.
They had been dating since their first year of college but broke up later because he tried to avoid her. He didn't want her to suffer because of him.
With that in mind, he asked,
"Why did you come here? I told you I hate you. I want you to leave me alone. Why bother me when I don't want to talk?"
She replied calmly,
"It's true you changed a lot after his death. Hey Kaito... I came here to tell you that Mr. Whang is dead. He was murdered."
His face changed instantly.
Shock overtook him.
It was hard to believe. He cried bitterly, shaking.
She continued,
"Right now, I came here to ask you to personally solve this case. You're the most skilled... and you were also his friend."
Without saying a word, he took his coat and left.
The rain continued to fall heavily as he walked toward the bloodstained street where cops and forensic teams were scattered all over.
They all looked displeased, annoyed to see some ugly man showing up at an active crime scene.
Meanwhile, the head officer smiled warmly upon seeing him, because he knew who Kaito Sensaki truly was.
Kaito silently handed two letters to the head officer and left the scene immediately.
Everyone around was furious seeing a random man approach and freely move around. They asked their superior,
"Who is that ugly guy anyway?"
The head officer's reply left them stunned.
He said,
"That man is none other than Kaito Sensaki."
Their faces changed immediately.
They were shocked to know that he was one of the top special agents once arranged by the government to work alongside Hoshiru Hiku, who was murdered three years ago, and Haji Whang, who was murdered just now.
While the rain kept falling, Kaito's figure slowly faded into the night.
The officer opened one of the two papers Kaito had given him and smiled to himself, thinking,
Even after all these years... he still found the culprit within minutes, with that exceptional skill of his.
Kaito walked toward an abandoned water factory where it all began.
He went downstairs into a creepy, broken hallway where he finally confronted the mad scientist who killed the man.
The scientist looked at him and sneered,
"How did you figure it out?"
Kaito answered coldly,
"The white powder that was sealed in the forensic file was familiar. By checking the date and time from the previous case and your release from prison, it was easy to guess. The powder was a chemical that slows blood clotting from the heart... and you cut perfectly through his arteries, just like three years ago, which causes tremendous pain in the body. Isn't that right, Doctor?"
The scientist smiled and said mockingly,
"Still... you don't want her to die, do you?"
Kaito was shocked to see an image on a nearby screen—
Rin chained up somewhere in a dark, wet place.
But he quickly smiled again, not showing any fear.
The scientist's expression turned curious.
"Why... are you smiling?"
Without a word between them, the scientist realized the truth:
Kaito had already figured out her location.
The scientist's confidence faltered.
Even though he felt disturbed, he started laughing aloud again and again, trying to shake off the fear.
He pointed a gun at Kaito and barked,
"Kneel!"
Kaito kneeled silently.
Without mercy, the scientist stamped on Kaito's head again and again, shouting,
"Plead for your life! Plead!"
Still, Kaito said nothing.
He waited.
And the moment the scientist let his guard down—
Kaito pulled a hidden gun from his sock and shot at the scientist's hand.
The scientist screamed in pain, throwing his gun away.
But even so, he smirked and said,
"If you kill me, your girlfriend dies too."
He showed another image of Rin, still captured.
Without hesitation, Kaito turned and left.
As he ran, the police stormed the building and captured the scientist. They called out, thanking Kaito, but he didn't stop.
He ran with everything he had.
At last, he reached the drainage system.
Without waiting, he jumped down into the old, rotting tunnels.
There she was.
Tied up.
Barely conscious.
She asked weakly,
"How... how did you know where I was?"
Kaito smiled faintly and said,
"This is a place I visited for a mission seven years ago.
I found it because of the damage caused during that operation...
Damage that I made back then."
Although exhausted to the limit, he fought to break her chains.
Using her hairpin, he finally managed to unlock the old shackles.
The water was rising dangerously fast.
Even though he could barely stand, he carried her to safety through the same cracked path he had created long ago.
Unfortunately, as he tried to push her through the opening, his left leg got trapped in a broken pit along the wall.
The water quickly filled the tunnel.
Kaito struggled, but he knew.
He knew he wouldn't make it out.
Still, as Rin was carried to safety, he smiled.
At least... I saved her.
Slowly, the water swallowed him whole.
Darkness.
When he opened his eyes, he was no longer in the world he knew.
He found himself watching his own funeral.
He saw Rin crying desperately, clutching the second letter he had given to the police.
At exactly 10 o'clock, as he listened to the sorrowful scene, he heard a voice whisper:
"Love is the most twisted thing, right?"
He turned around—
But there was no one there.
Suddenly, everything went black.
Strange words and unknown languages echoed in his mind.
The sensation of falling...
When he awoke again—
In front of him stood a random man, a woman, and a small girl about three years old.
Only then did Kaito Sensaki realize—
He had been reincarnated into another world.
