Chapter 7 - The scene

The week went so fast just as Sonia has hoped it would.

The moon gave way for the day to brighten up into a cool Monday morning.

Sonia stretched her arms as she stood from the bed, she needs to prepare for work. She couldn't wait to meet her colleagues.

She hastened up as she brushed her teeth and took a quick bath.

She went to the wardrobe as she carefully took a look at the dresses there. She got to the part where she hung her uniform, stretched her hand and brought it out.

She moved to the standing mirror in her room as she dressed up for work. Her lips curled into a wide smile as she puts on her uniform, she had missed her work, the only thing that gives her peace of mind.

She put on a light make up and picked up her bag to go downstairs.

She descended the stairs majestically feeling like one who got a new job.

The house keepers greeted her as they chorused it together.

"Good morning too", Sonia responded.

"What's for breakfast cos I need to get to work on time", Sonia asked as she looked at her wrist watch to confirm the time.

"I'm already on it ma, just have a seat", one of the house keepers responded.

"Okay, be fast about it", Sonia said as she took her seat at the dining room.

The house keeper walked in carrying a tray with plates of food on it.

She carefully placed them on the dining table, served the dishes as she bowed and took her leave.

Sonia picked up her cutlery as she ate the apetitizing fried yam and egg sauce. She was enjoying the food and wished it wasn't a work day but she knew she had to leave now.

She covered the remaining food and stood up as she carried her bad and left the building.

She came out and it was then it struck her mind that she isn't familiar with the environment and needed to ask one of the house keepers the direction, she hissed knowing that it wouldn't be easy.

As she was considering going back to the house, the chauffeur came and greeted her.

"Good morning ma", he greeted. "Boss said I should drive you to work", he added as he moved to the car and opened the back seat not waiting for her response.

Sonia was shocked, she never thought the man she got married to could be this thoughtful. Without wasting any extra minute, she went straight to where the car was parked and entered.

The journey to the hospital was smooth and she took the opportunity to learn the way out of the estate.

In just a little while, they got to the hospital and before she could open the door, the chauffeur came down from his seat and came to her side. She tried stopping him cos she was already feeling shy knowing that her colleagues would be around but the chauffeur opened the door anyways and she had no other option that to come down while looking at the ground.

"Have a nice day at work", the chauffeur said with a smile as he entered the driver's seat and drove out.

Sonia stood still hoping that no one saw her but before she knew what was happening someone started approaching her. She already knew who that would be, no one else but her friend Banky.

"Hi bestie", Banky said as she came close to her embracing her with a hug.

"Hi Banky", Sonia said trying to gain courage to face her.

"Soo…..congratulations to the married one even though she couldn't tell her own bestie that she's getting married", Banky said pouting her lips.

"How did you know", Sonia asked as she widened her eyes, she thought it was a secret and even though she was brought to work today, that doesn't mean she's married.

Banky chuckled, "who in the hospital doesn't know that our lovely nurse Sonia is married to one of the most influential guys in this town", Banky said.

"How did you guys know", Sonia asked still looking surprised.

"So last week, you didn't come to work which is unlike you and we were wondering what could be the problem but then the matron entered the nurses' call room and said your husband called and said you wouldn't be coming for Atleast a week, that he needs to have his honeymoon with his wife", Banky said smiling

"Jezzz, that man was so straight", Sonia said with her cheeks turning red already with embarrassment

"But…. that haven't justified why you couldn't tell you bestie, everyone was looking at me as if I knew all the time and pretended not to know why you weren't at work", Banky said pretending to be mad at her.

"Im so sorry Best…..it's just a long story but I'll explain better later, you know I wouldn't want to hide things from you intentionally", Sonia said bringing her palms together as she pleaded with Banky.

"No problems bestie, let's go inside cos it's almost time for duty take over", Banky said as they held hands together and went inside the hospital.

As they walked inside together, everyone began congratulating Sonia, giving her thumbs up.

"So Banky… is Dr. Pius on duty today"? Sonia asked.

"No best… he traveled to one of the African countries for an experiment but should be back by tomorrow or next", Banky said.

"Oh, okay", Sonia said trying to hide her disappointment.

"Any problems"? Banky asked looking at her.

"Nooo, not at all", Sonia answered almost immediately. She wouldn't want to discuss this matter with anyone, not even her best friend.

Back in the house, the house keepers were all busy working and doing their different chores.

Jane went to the house control room to get the master key to Mr. Michael's room. She was given an important task to get a particular document from his room whenever he leaves the house and this was the perfect time to do that cos Sonia wasn't around too and everyone seemed busy.

She quietly and quickly went upstairs and straight to his master's door.

She inserted the key and turned it making the door to open. She peeped around to make sure no one was around and on confirmation, she entered the room and closed the door behind her without knowing it wasn't entirely shut.

She went through his drawers one by one looking for the document.

As she opened the last drawer, she saw the document and she smiled knowing that she would be rewarded greatly by the man who sent her.

She hurriedly picked up the document but as she was about closing the drawer, she heard someone's footsteps.

"What are you doing there", the house keeper who came up asked.

"I'm…I'm here to tidy master's room", Jane responded stammering.

"Since when were you assigned to clean master's room, have you forgotten that I'm the only one assigned to take care of his room and I don't even do that in his absent", the house keeper said coming closer.

"And what are you holding", the house keeper asked coming closer to her.

"It's nothing", Jane said trying to hiding the document.

The house keeper was fast enough to go behind her and snatched the document from her.

"You came to steal from master's room"? The house keeper asked looking at her sternly.

"There's a misunderstanding here", Jane said shaking.

"A misunderstanding"? The house keeper asked scoffingly. "I think you will explain that better to master when he comes back, maybe he'll understand your misunderstanding", She added giving her a dirty look.

"You can't tell him", Jane asked coming close to her. "This should be between us, I'll keep it and leave", Jane added.

"Be playing, I'll eventually tell him, it's my duty", she said has she started walking out of the room.

Jane picked up a metal handle in the room and hit her on the head and she fell down immediately.

She placed her fingers on her hand to check her pulse immediately but noticed it wasn't beating anymore.

She became scared but that was the only way out to save herself from the mess she already created.

Jane thought for a moment, she needed to make it look unsuspicious, she wouldn't let her fear put her in more trouble.

She went out of the room and made sure no one was looking. She dragged the house keeper's lifeless body and pushed down the stairs to make it look like she missed her steps and fell down.

She hurriedly locked the master's room and returned the key and resumed her work immediately.
