In this world, buying cards wasn't as easy as it sounded.
Even the richest elites could often only get their hands on so-called "rare cards" that were nothing more than high-ATK vanilla monsters.
And for true connoisseurs—like Duelists such as Professor Crowler—there were some cards that no amount of money could buy.
Cards like the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, of which only three were said to exist. Or the legendary Egyptian God Cards. Or one-of-a-kind prototypes like certain Destiny HERO cards whose designers passed away before production.
And then, there were cards that, while not "mythic" or banned, were just as legendary in their own way—idol-tier cards recognized by every duelist alive:
Dark Magician Girl.
In the original timeline, she was a card owned exclusively by Yugi Muto.
Yes, you read that right.
A card that only Yugi Muto himself possessed. Only one in the world.
No exaggeration—Dark Magician Girl was the beloved "idol" of the Duel Monsters world. Every year, she starred in countless pieces of fan media. But no matter how many people adored her, no matter how many versions were created… no one actually owned the card.
Because she belonged only to Yugi.
Even Dark Magician and Blue-Eyes White Dragon had multiple legitimate copies. But Dark Magician Girl? Only one. Which meant that anytime she appeared, it had to be the real thing. Yugi's card. His spirit. His apprentice to the Dark Magician.
Originally, Hikaru Amagi had been brainstorming ways to summon Dark Magician the Dragon Knight. The easiest method was to feed an 8-star monster into Instant Fusion. But in this era, Level 8 monsters were no joke. They were strong and hard to summon.
So, since he'd just earned a huge stash of gems, he figured—why not try to buy one?
But unfortunately, Professor Crowler had shut that idea down fast.
Totally out of budget.
Which made sense. Even in Hikaru's old world, Blue-Eyes going for $87 million was a meme. In this world? Well… probably still a joke.
Kaiba didn't even spend that much acquiring his own company.
The point was: Dark Magician had only skyrocketed in value after becoming the card that crowned Yugi the first King of Games. Nobody who owned one would ever let it go unless they were truly desperate.
But then the school's annual Academy Festival rolled around, and Hikaru suddenly remembered—
In the anime, Dark Magician Girl's spirit had once wandered near Duel Academy, enchanted by the festive atmosphere. She even ended up joining a "Cosplay Duel."
With the altered timeline in this world, Hikaru wasn't sure if it would still happen…
But what if it did?
What if Dark Magician showed up too?
Seizing the opportunity, Hikaru decided to explore the festival.
"'Integration Club'? What is that, a rural-urban coalition?"
"No, no, Chazz—it's Yugō. You know, Fusion..."
"Wait—they're recruiting for a Fusion Club knockoff?"
Unlike the original timeline, Banner hadn't disappeared, so Jaden was full of energy, wandering the festival with Chazz. As they joked about the weird club name, Hikaru came across them and joined in.
"'Integration'? That's low…" Alexis murmured, scowling. "Didn't they lose to Hikaru?"
"Yo, Hikaru!" Jaden waved. "C'mon over!"
Hikaru walked up to see a group of students in purple uniforms cheerily handing out prize bags to "visitors."
Though "visitors" just meant students from the other dorms—mostly girls, of course.
Only the Blue Dorm had female students, after all.
Hikaru glanced at the sign:
Integration Club.
Ah. So they'd changed the name from Fusion Club to Integration Club?
Smart shortcut.
In card game text, "fusion" and "integration" were occasionally used interchangeably. The game hadn't made any formal distinction yet. Some effects said one; others said the other. But from a card-type standpoint, Fusion was clearly the main term.
All Fusion Monsters were Fusions—not Integrations.
"Jaden, what are you doing here? Isn't the Red Dorm prepping their usual act?" Hikaru asked.
He remembered well: Red Dorm traditionally ran cosplay duels—students dressed as Duel Monsters, then played in character.
Jaden, as their poster boy, should've been center stage.
"Syrus was really into the idea," Jaden said, scratching his head. "He wanted to design a Dark Magician Girl costume."
"Ah…"
"As for you, shouldn't the Fusion Club be recruiting too?"
"No need." Hikaru shrugged.
The Fusion Club already had most of the first-years interested in Fusion. The ones still in the Integration Club were either privilege-clinging Blue students, upperclassmen bullies, or a few poor kids still stuck being bullied. And those, Hikaru couldn't exactly save en masse.
So he didn't need to recruit aggressively like they did. Their rep—and the name "Fusion Club"—already drew in any sane duelists.
Instead, Hikaru was focused on a more important mission:
Finding Dark Magician Girl.
Just then, a thunderous cheer erupted from the Integration Club's booth.
A swarm of masked, purple-uniformed students came stampeding out like headless chickens—some dressed as bears, wolves, penguins—completely forgetting to take off their mascot suits as they tore off in the direction of the Red Dorm.
Hikaru and the others exchanged glances. Something was up.
They quickly followed.
When they arrived at the Red Dorm's duel arena, they found Syrus Truesdale standing proudly at the judge's podium, holding a mic with unprecedented excitement, shouting:
"Wooah! Perfect combo! With two Magician's Valkyria on the field, your opponent can't declare attacks!"
"That means Dark Magician Girl is in total control!"
"OOOHHHH!!"
The entire Red Dorm arena was packed wall-to-wall with students who had gathered to see the spectacle.
"I'll do my best~!" chirped the golden-haired girl on the field. Her smile was radiant, like a real angel. She waved her wand and blew kisses to the crowd.
Even Professor Crowler was in the stands, cheering like a fangirl.
"Wait, that duelist really summoned Dark Magician Girl?" Bastion Misawa, dressed in a tiger onesie for cosplay, blinked in shock.
"She's the real deal," Zane said immediately. As someone who could see spirits, he knew.
Something felt… off.
Hikaru's eyes darted across the duel field.
If it wasn't Jaden dueling her, then—
He scanned the opponent's side. Then his pupils shrank.
Across from Dark Magician Girl, standing on the challenger's platform, was a girl with her hair tied in a ponytail with a yellow ribbon. She wore a modified Red Dorm jacket. Her brows were furrowed as she examined her cards.
That was—
Serena!?
Reiji Akaba's "daughter"!?
