"My turn," said Jaden, drawing from his Deck.
"Jaden, you've got your hands full this turn!" Avian chirped beside him. "You've gotta deal with both the field and Thousand-Eyes Restrict!"
"Do I?" Jaden smiled with unshakable confidence, revealing his hand. "Spell Card—Pot of Greed!"
Hikaru Amagi smacked his lips. If he had Pot of Greed every turn, he'd be confident too. Too bad his copy had basically been replaced by Fusion Tag and Substitute Fusion.
Jaden drew two cards—and a plan clicked into place. "I activate Field Spell—Skyscraper!"
Rumbling filled the arena as towering buildings rose from the Duel Field, engulfing the already urban backdrop. Fusion Gate, which had been lingering on the field, instantly vanished.
Hikaru nodded.
In this world's ruleset, the first player could draw, but only one Field Spell could be active between both sides. A newly played one would overwrite the existing.
Golden Captain glanced around at the skyscrapers and gave no resistance.
...He actually liked Skyscraper.
Jaden then carefully examined the field, the set card on Hikaru's side, and Hikaru's hand—Miracle Fusion and Substitute Fusion. Life Points were 7000 vs. 8000.
He checked his own hand again—then smirked.
"I set three cards. Turn end."
"Three?" Golden Captain blinked. "That makes four total, including Hikaru's set. Isn't that a bit much?"
"Draw," he muttered, pulling a card from his Deck before casting a glance at his teammate. "What now?"
"Why are you asking me?" Golden Idol replied, its dozens of golden eyes darting every which way.
Thousand-Eyes Restrict was a terrifying monster—it could absorb an opponent's monster each turn, and while on the field, locked all others from attacking or changing positions.
But right now... it had absorbed a monster with 0 ATK and DEF—Wanmelt the Alchemist!
0 eats 0 equals... still 0.
Now it was just a 0-ATK body that couldn't deal damage.
What a headache. Golden Captain hadn't expected to be gridlocked by his own teammate.
He glanced at Avian.
Oh. Right. Not the first time.
He pondered... Should he tribute Thousand-Eyes to summon a bigger monster and push damage? Or wait it out?
This was the double duel curse: one strange move and all four players could end up deadlocked.
Now that Thousand-Eyes Restrict was in play, the opponents would likely stall until they could counter it.
"Just in case, I Normal Summon myself," he declared.
Elemental HERO Golden Captain – Level 4, LIGHT, ATK 2100.
His set card was Hero Barrier—as long as he had an Elemental HERO face-up, he could negate one opponent's monster attack.
Judging by Jaden's set cards, they were probably stall cards. Nothing too dangerous.
"Turn end."
"Hah, looks like this turn will decide it," Jaden grinned.
"...What?" Golden Captain blinked.
"End Phase! Quick-Play Spell—Flute of Summoning Kuriboh! I Special Summon Winged Kuriboh from my Deck!"
"Kuriiiii~!" The tiny, winged furball fluttered out from Jaden's Deck.
Golden Captain raised a brow. Winged Kuriboh? …It was a real spirit too. Looked so close to Jaden…
"Now it's my turn. Thanks, Jaden. If we wait, we lose ground. We're ending this now."
"You? With no monsters? Our LP is still 8000!" Golden Idol barked.
"That's not a guarantee."
"My turn—Draw!" Hikaru looked at the card and shook his head. "Didn't pull it, Jaden."
"Ha, then use mine!" Jaden's eyes lit up with fire.
"Hah! Sounds like you've been waiting to say that!"
Since their duel in the Realm of Warriors, Jaden had been leveling up nonstop. He might nap through class, but his Duel instincts had sharpened into steel.
"First, activate Trap—Hero Blast!"
Golden Captain's eyes narrowed.
"Target 1 Normal 'Elemental HERO' in the GY. Add it to hand. I add Avian. Then, destroy 1 opponent's monster with ATK less than or equal to that monster's."
"Destroying Thousand-Eyes Restrict, of course."
"You're using that now!?" Golden Captain flinched.
"Next Trap—Card Destruction!"
"What!?" Golden Idol's eyes bulged. "What did Yuki set!?"
"Both players discard their hands and draw the same number of cards."
Hikaru dumped his hand to the Graveyard and drew. Golden Captain reluctantly discarded Skyman, realizing he could've used him to plus.
Hikaru scanned his new hand.
Got it.
"Activate Substitute Fusion from GY! Banish it, return Wanmelt the Alchemist to the Extra Deck, draw 1!"
Draw.
Next—"Spell Card—Fusion Armament! Reveal Black Flame Swordsman in the Extra Deck to Special Summon Flame Swordsman, one of its materials, from the GY!"
"At last, my turn!" Flame Swordsman cheered, appearing on the field.
"...Though it looks like I'm about to be tributed again. Well, I'll take it with honor."
Hikaru smiled. "I'm counting on you—Flame Swordsman, Winged Kuriboh."
"Yes, sir!"
"Kuriiiii!"
Both monsters shimmered and vanished—replaced by a massive, stomping war machine.
"Ancient Gear Golem?" Golden Captain blinked.
"Finally—Continuous Trap: Ancient Gear Duel"
The purple Trap flipped up. Hikaru had set it last turn—just waiting.
"If your opponent controls a monster, you can banish monsters from your field and GY—including Ancient Gear Golem—to Fusion Summon 1 monster that lists Ancient Gear Golem as material."
"Then, the Fusion Monster can attack three times this Battle Phase."
"What!?"
"Three attacks!?"
"Wait, didn't he already discard two Fusion Spells?" Golden Idol gasped.
"No," Golden Captain realized. "Earlier, he used Ancient Gear Knight as Fusion Material. Just now, he dumped Ancient Gear Beast!"
"Well played, Jaden. Your synergy's on point."
"Exactly! Thanks, Jaden!" Hikaru shouted with a laugh.
When he'd seen Hikaru's set cards, Jaden had known what had to be done. He'd prepared the entire field for Hikaru's final move.
Without Jaden's support, Hikaru would've never been able to pull this off—not at this phase. That Trap's condition was demanding. Not nearly as simple as Ancient Gear Fusion.
The colossus rose—Ultimate Ancient Gear Golem, ATK 4400.
It let out a mechanical roar across the battlefield.
The two golden spirits glanced at each other.
Yeah.
We're screwed.
