Chapter 16 - 16. Love Detector

How the hell could he tell? Coyote hesitated, weighing his response, but before he could say a word, Jax burst out laughing.

"Oh my God, you did fuck her."

"Jesus Christ! I didn't even say anything," Coyote said, stunned.

Jax smirked. "Didn't have to. You paused for a while after I asked, and you made that face you usually make when you're about to lie."

[Man! This your friend knows you very well.]

"We've been friends since childhood, of course he knows me," Coyote responded silently to the System.

[So... he might be the first person to figure out I'm in your head?]

Coyote was about to respond when Jax unknowingly cut in.

"So tell me, what was it like fucking billionaire pussy?" Jax asked, winking, clearly giddy for the details.

Coyote smirked. "Come on, dude, you know I don't kiss and tell—though there was very little kissing going on between her and I this morning."

Jax beamed and shook his hand. "That's how it's supposed to be, bro. Wear that pussy out."

They both laughed. Coyote pulled out his phone, ignoring Gwen's missed calls and messages he'd been avoiding. He opened his bank app and made a transfer to Jax's account.

A few minutes later, Jax's phone pinged. He checked the alert, glanced up at Coyote in surprise.

"Dude, you gave me half of your earnings from last night. Are you sure you didn't make a mistake?"

Coyote smiled. "No, I didn't. That money covers the drugs from last night—which, by the way, did wonders for me—as well as your cut. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have made that money."

Jax lit up with a grateful smile, clearly moved. "Are you sure about this?" he asked again, still not fully convinced.

"Go on, take it. I'm about to make more than that anyway," Coyote said as he started changing into something more appropriate for work in the shop.

"You're right. You're about to become a millionaire, and you don't even have to race to make it. Being Isabella's sugar boy will get you there," Jax teased, nudging him.

Coyote shook his head, not rising to the bait. But even as he tried to focus on the cars, his mind wandered—straight to Maya. Her beautiful face popped into his thoughts, and suddenly he couldn't concentrate.

He picked up his phone again and typed out a message: "Hey, Maya. It's Coyote from last night. I'd really like to talk with you about a "health related" issue."

He pressed send and slid the phone back into his pocket, returning to the cars as Jax continued cracking jokes beside him.

Coyote finished working on the cars that afternoon. As he wrapped up, he paused to take one last look around the auto shop, soaking in the familiar sights, smells, and memories. Just as he was heading out, Mr. Knox called after him.

"Don't be a stranger, Coyote. Come and visit whenever you like."

"Yeah, I will. But please cut down on the gambling, so that I can have somewhere to visit," Coyote replied, hoping the advice wouldn't fall on deaf ears.

The old man laughed. "I'll do my best, but I'm not making any promises."

With that, Coyote stepped outside. He was just about to call a cab when a car drove past—and behind the wheel was Katalina. Their eyes met for the briefest second. In that glance, he caught it—fear, flickering across her face.

She must've come back to the scene of the crime to see what was left of him.

If only this bitch knew the kind of dark twisted thoughts running through my mind right now... Coyote thought darkly. She would leave town and never come back.

He hailed a cab and got in without another glance.

A few minutes later, he was home. He stepped into the shower, letting the hot water wash away the grime and sweat of the day. Then he collapsed onto his bed, arms behind his head, replaying everything that had happened—from his "meeting" with Isabella to quitting his job to Katalina's drive-by, when the system's voice chimed in.

Coyote got a text from Maya, a reply to the message he'd sent earlier.

"Mr. Watkins, do you have some health-related issues? Or do you just want to talk to me?"

He smirked and typed back, "Yes to both of those things, but most importantly, I do need to see your pretty face again." He hit send.

A few minutes later, his phone buzzed with her response, but just as he was about to read it, a knock echoed through his apartment. Coyote glanced through the peephole and saw Gwen standing outside.

He hesitated. Instead of opening the door, he stepped back and stood still, hoping she'd think no one was home and go away.

But Gwen didn't give up. She knocked again, louder this time.

"Coyote, open the door. I know you're in there!"

Still, he stayed silent.
