Chapter 17 - Secrets Of The Keepers

The vast chamber stretched beyond what the eye could see, its towering shelves filled with ancient tomes, scrolls, and artifacts glowing with forgotten energy.

Ryuu took a cautious step forward, his gaze flickering across the strange symbols etched into the floor. Each one pulsed faintly, as though alive.

Selene and Aeris followed close behind, their eyes filled with equal parts wonder and wariness.

"This place… it's unlike anything I've ever seen," Aeris murmured, running her fingers along the spine of an aged book.

The air was thick with an otherworldly presence, a silent whisper of voices long gone.

Lyra moved past them with confidence, her presence commanding.

"The Sanctum of the Keepers—a treasury of knowledge preserved since the first wielders of the Heartstone. Within these walls, every secret, every battle, and every tragedy tied to its power is recorded."

Ryuu clenched his fists. This was it. The truth he had been seeking.

But before he could take another step, the chamber shuddered. A soft hum filled the air as an unseen force wrapped around them like invisible chains. The torches lining the walls flickered, their flames dancing unnaturally.

Then, from the shadows of the library, figures emerged.

They wore flowing robes adorned with symbols Ryuu couldn't decipher, their faces hidden behind intricate masks of silver and bone.

Their presence radiated something ancient—something beyond human understanding.

One of them stepped forward, his voice a blend of many tones, echoing in the chamber.

"You have passed the trial of worthiness, but knowledge is not given freely. The truth of the Heartstone carries a price. Are you prepared to bear it?"

Ryuu's heart pounded. He had come too far to turn back now. "I'll pay whatever price is necessary."

The Keepers exchanged silent glances before another spoke.

"Then listen well, bearer of the Heartstone, for this knowledge will reshape your very existence."

A ripple of energy surged through the chamber, and suddenly, the world around them changed. The library vanished, replaced by a swirling void of shifting light and darkness. Images flickered within the abyss—memories of a time long past.

Ryuu felt himself being pulled forward, as if his mind was unraveling and reconstructing itself within the vision.

He saw it.

A time when the Heartstone was not an artifact, but a living entity—a force of creation and destruction. It was neither good nor evil, but something beyond mortal comprehension. A cosmic force that chose its wielders not by fate, but by necessity.

A cycle of power.

The first wielder, a man wreathed in golden fire, created kingdoms.

The second, a woman bathed in shadow, burned them to ash.

The third, a child with eyes of endless night, shattered reality itself.

And now, it was Ryuu's turn.

The visions swirled, revealing glimpses of destruction. Of himself standing at the center of it all, power radiating from his very being, his hands soaked in blood.

His breath caught.

This is what they meant. This is the price. This is the Weight of Destiny.

Ryuu staggered back, the vision fading. The library reappeared around him, and he fell to one knee, panting. The weight of what he had just seen pressed down on him like a mountain.

Selene and Aeris knelt beside him, concern etched across their faces.

"Ryuu, what did you see?" Selene asked.

He swallowed hard. "The truth. The Heartstone… it's not just an artifact. It's part of something greater. A force that moves through time, choosing wielders to shape the world—whether for creation or destruction."

Aeris narrowed her eyes. "And what does that mean for you?"

Lyra's voice cut through the silence. "It means Ryuu is at a crossroads. Every wielder before him has either become a savior or a calamity. And now, the world waits to see which he will be."

The Keeper who had spoken earlier raised his hand. A small, glowing fragment of the Heartstone floated toward Ryuu, its energy crackling with untamed power.

"Take it," the Keeper commanded. "This is but a fraction of the Heartstone's true strength. It will allow you to glimpse the depths of what lies ahead."

Ryuu hesitated. The fragment pulsed, calling to him.

He reached out.

The moment his fingers made contact, a shockwave tore through his body.

Visions flashed again—this time, faster, more violent. He saw himself in a battlefield, warriors kneeling before him as a ruler. Then, in another, he stood alone against an army, his power tearing through the land like a storm.

And in the last, he stood atop a mountain of corpses, his eyes hollow, his hands trembling as the world burned around him.

The vision shattered.

Ryuu gasped as he snapped back to reality, his entire body trembling.

The Keepers watched him in silence.

"Now, you understand."

Ryuu clenched the fragment in his hand, his resolve hardening.

He wasn't just some random wielder of the Heartstone. He was part of a cycle that had repeated for eons. He had seen what he could become—either a ruler who shaped the world or a force of destruction that ended it.

And the choice was his to make.

Lyra placed a hand on his shoulder. "What will you do now, Ryuu?"

He exhaled sharply. "I'm going to break this cycle."

A moment of silence. Then, the Keepers laughed—a deep, knowing sound that echoed through the chamber.

"Many have tried. None have succeeded."

Ryuu's grip tightened. "Then I'll be the first."

The Keepers fell silent, and then, as if satisfied, they bowed.

"Then let your journey begin."

At that moment, the doors to the sanctuary swung open once more, revealing a new path—one that led into the depths of the unknown.

And Ryuu, now carrying the knowledge of his fate, stepped forward.
