Chapter 16 - Chapter 15: Toyokawa Shoko

"Huh? So, Kanzaki, you already heard?" Issei Hyoudou said with a lopsided grin, flashing his phone like a trophy. "I wanted to surprise you."

He turned the screen toward Kanzaki, showing him a photo. "Cute, right?"

Kanzaki glanced at the image, his expression unreadable. "She's cute on the outside," he said, shaking his head. "But every gift from fate comes with a price."

His tone turned sharper. "That woman is dangerous. You should break up with her before it's too late."

"Hehe~ What's this? Kanzaki, are you jealous?"

Issei winked, teasing.

Kanzaki didn't rise to the bait. He just placed a firm hand on Issei's shoulder, his gaze cool and silent.

Kind words never sway a fool.

Let him find out the hard way.

---

Later that day, as Kanzaki returned from school, he spotted a familiar figure standing in front of his door— a girl with flowing blue hair, neatly dressed as though attending an interview.

She wore a crisp white shirt tucked into a black skirt, and leather boots polished to a shine. From afar, she looked every bit the refined noblewoman, radiating a gentle elegance.

"Hello. Are you Mr. Kanzaki?" she asked as he approached.

"I'm Toyokawa Shoko. I came for the maid job. Is the interview starting soon?"

Kanzaki narrowed his eyes, scrutinizing her features. "Toyokawa Shoko...?"

She paused, sensing his gaze. "Is something wrong with my name?"

"No, just... I've seen you before. Online," Kanzaki said as he opened the door. "You were in a band, weren't you? CRYCHIC, right?"

Her eyes widened, surprised. "That's true... But the band's disbanded now."

"A shame," Kanzaki murmured. "I liked that song—'Kasuga Kage,' wasn't it?"

Caught off guard, Shoko quickly shifted gears. "Well, let's focus on the interview."

Without warning, Kanzaki peeled off his shirt, revealing a set of sculpted eight-pack abs.

"No interview necessary. You're hired."

"...Mr. Kanzaki, let's be clear. I don't do any... special services."

"You wish," Kanzaki scoffed, walking toward a pile of gym equipment.

"Just cook me dinner and do your job. Do it well, and I'll give you a raise."

Shoko blinked, speechless.

Oh.

He just wanted to work out.

That was... mildly terrifying.

---

Two hours passed. Shoko had finished cleaning and returned from a grocery run. She placed a steaming plate of Mapo Tofu on the table.

"How is it?" she asked.

Kanzaki took a bite, then set down his chopsticks. "Pretty basic. The seasoning's weak, and the spice doesn't kick."

Shoko lowered her head, lips tightening. "I'm sorry. I'm still learning..."

She wasn't lying, she had only started cooking recently. Growing up in comfort, she never had to. Now, she cooked out of necessity... cheap, simple dishes like this or fried rice that could stretch a tight budget.

Kanzaki noticed her frustration. "Relax. I didn't say I was firing you."

He pulled out a bank card and slid it across the table. "You look like you could use more money. How about a part-time job?"

Her eyes narrowed. "What kind of job?"

Before she could brace for another bizarre remark, Kanzaki stood up and then—

Black wings spread out from his back, as flames danced around his finger tip.

"Let me introduce myself properly," he said calmly. "I'm actually a devil."

Shoko froze. "...Is it too late to quit?"

Kanzaki chuckled. "Not at all. But I'd have to erase your memory."

She hesitated. "Maybe... just tell me more about the job."

"Accept my power. Train under my guidance. Get stronger."

He tapped the card. "That's ten million yen. The faster you grow, the more you earn."

"That's it?" she asked, eyes widening.

"That's it."

The offer was strange... Maybe insane, but it didn't sound hard. Exercise. Get stronger. Get paid.

Shoko exhaled slowly. "Alright. I'll take it."

And so began Shoko's unexpected new job, courtesy of a devil named Kanzaki.

---

The next day...

Shoko awoke on the sofa, groggy and sore.

"Where... am I?"

"My home," Kanzaki's voice said from nearby.

She jolted upright, memories flooding back.

The training.

The exhaustion. The blackout.

"You fainted after two hours," Kanzaki remarked casually. "Slept like a rock. Even woke up after me."

He tossed her an envelope. "Here's your pay. Fifty thousand yen. Oh, that also includes a bonus for progress."

"Thank you, boss."

"'Boss' sounds weird. Just call me Master."

She sighed. "...Thank you, Master."

Life's rough.

---

Twenty days later, Tokyo Jujutsu High School

"Kanzaki? What are you doing here?"

Yuji Itadori beamed as he spotted Kanzaki, sweat still clinging to him from training.

"Came to collect payment," Kanzaki replied, accepting a cursed corpse from Satoru Gojo.

With Sukuna's finger transferred elsewhere, the cursed spirits around Kuoh Town had dwindled. To maintain his momentum, Kanzaki had made a deal with the strongest sorcerers.

They provided intel.

He supplied brute force.

It was a win-win.

After pocketing the reward, Kanzaki turned to Gojo.

"Why do these missions feel so... easy lately? Got any special-grade cursed spirits left for me?"

Gojo shrugged. "There were... But I just got to them first."

Kanzaki stared.

Gojo grinned.
