Chapter 28 - See you again

Unknowingly, it was the last day before departure. Under Aohui's guidance, my marksmanship had improved significantly. "Tomorrow, we set out. Remember, don't panic when you face the enemy—just perform as you usually do," Aohui encouraged me. "Yes! Thank you,大哥, for your careful guidance these past few days," I said gratefully. It was dinnertime, and the cafeteria was hosting another farewell banquet. Warriors from all four nations gathered together, creating a lively atmosphere. The drink called Suji in this world was delicious, but for some reason, I wasn't in the mood to eat. "What are you daydreaming about?" Kadi asked. "Oh, nothing. Just suddenly missing my family before we leave," I replied softly. Then, an idea struck me. "Kadi, I want to sneak back to see my family. Can you cover for me? If anyone asks where I am, just say you don't know." "What? You're sneaking out? If you get caught, it'll be big trouble!" Andi hurriedly tried to dissuade me. "Shh, keep it down. I'm afraid this trip to the Demon Realm might be more dangerous than we think. I just want to see my family one last time. Please, help me out," I pleaded. "Ugh, fine. I get where you're coming from. I'd love to visit my family too, but my village is too far. I know a small path to leave the base. Follow me," Kadi said. "Thank you! I'll bring you back a gift," I said gratefully as I followed Kadi.Kadi led me to the warehouse area, where there was a back gate used for carriages. He helped me open it, and after thanking him, I quickly rode off on horseback. Fortunately, the base and my village were both near the capital, about a half-hour ride away. The pale moonlight bathed my shoulders as I galloped toward Bona's house. After a long ride, I reached the village and arrived at Bona's doorstep. I knocked softly but urgently. "Coming!" a familiar voice called. Bona opened the door. "Brother Bai?! Why are you back?" she exclaimed in surprise. "I snuck back tonight to see you all. I'm leaving tomorrow," I said as I stepped inside. "Isn't that Bai? How'd you get back? We were just about to eat—come join us and tell us everything!" Bona's mother welcomed me warmly. "The expedition army is heading to the Demon Realm tomorrow. I missed everyone, so I took a short leave to sneak back," I explained. "That's wonderful that you could come back! Let's have a good gathering tonight," Bona's father said with a happy smile. "I can't stay long. I have to head back after dinner—the commander didn't give me much time." That night, I savored delicious mushroom soup while telling Bona's family about my life at the camp.Feigo: "Where's Bai tonight? I haven't seen him."

Kadi, with a meaningful tone: "There's nothing in this world more important than cherishing family."At Bona's house, the brief dinner came to an end. Before leaving, I took off my military badge and handed it to Bona. "This is my badge. Keep it as a gift until I return." Bona took it carefully. "Thank you, Brother Bai. I'll treasure it. You have to come back safely!" she said. "Be careful on the road—don't ride too fast," Bona's father advised. "Thank you, everyone. I'll definitely return safely. Wait for my good news," I said as I mounted my horse and rode off. Bona's family grew smaller in the distance behind me. I didn't dare look back, afraid Bona would worry. After another half-hour journey, I snuck back to the base. Luckily, no one noticed. I led the horse back to the stable, fed it some hay and water, and thanked it for its company. Back at the dormitory, the banquet had ended, and everyone was there. "Bai, where were you? We couldn't find you anywhere," Naan asked. "Sorry, sorry. I snuck home to see my family," I replied. That night, I stared at the moon outside the window, my mind racing, unable to sleep.
