Chapter 21 - – Rasengan (Part 2)

A technique like the Rasengan held immense value for someone at Tobirama Senju's current stage. In fact, once he completed the development of the Flying Thunder God Technique, the Rasengan's worth would only increase.

After all, the Rasengan was originally created to complement the sheer speed of the Flying Thunder God. Naturally, someone like Tobirama—renowned for his swiftness—would be intrigued by the prototype Rasengan in Genma's hands.

So, when would Tobirama finally consider the Rasengan to have "lost its value"?

The answer: after he invents the Flying Thunder God Slash.

To further develop the Rasengan, Genma needed help from a clone technique.

But where could he get that?

Tobirama hesitated briefly, then eventually relented and agreed to "bleed a little more."

He'd already given away three jutsu—what's a little extra on top?

"If you need a clone technique, I can teach you one. Shadow… mm, how about Water Clone instead?"

Thankfully, he wasn't generous to the point of handing out forbidden secrets to anyone. A B-rank Shadow Clone was unnecessary. A C-rank Water Clone was plenty useful.

Genma wasn't greedy either. As long as he could benefit, he was satisfied. He released the chakra in his hands and began practicing the clone technique.

Clone techniques were incredibly useful—in fact, they belonged to the most practical class of jutsu. In real combat, oftentimes 0.5 + 0.5 > 1.

And he had to admit—splitting his thoughts between two bodies felt strange in a fascinating way.

With Genma's current capabilities, he was already at least Tokubetsu Jonin level on paper. Learning a C-rank jutsu like this was a breeze. By the next day, he could already use the Water Clone Technique proficiently.

Tobirama continued recovering and had no intention of leaving just yet.

Once he mastered the Water Clone, Genma immediately began the Rasengan "synthesis" experiment.

Being cautious and safety-conscious, Genma chose to head with Tobirama to a remote spot away from the camp, just in case something went wrong during practice.

"Here goes."

Genma glanced at Tobirama beside him. His words were both a signal to begin and a subtle disclaimer: You're standing this close—don't blame me if something goes wrong.

As he spoke, he performed the Water Clone Technique, splitting off a portion of his chakra into a clone. Then, he extended chakra from his left hand while suspending his right hand above it to begin compressing.

Once the chakra sphere had reached a certain density, the clone began spinning it clockwise with both hands. Emulating Naruto, the original creator of the training method, Genma's movements at this stage were anything but graceful—his clone's hands moved like frantic cat paws, batting the chakra sphere erratically from side to side.

As the clone's hand speed increased, the chakra sphere—or rather, the densely packed chakra forming it—began to rotate. At first, the rotation was sluggish, but with persistent effort from the clone, the core of the sphere seemed to develop its own gravitational pull, accelerating the outer chakra layers into a high-speed spin.

Then came a short, crisp sound—dense yet light—like wind rushing through a hollow steel pipe.

The Rasengan, though seemingly weightless, now felt like it held a tangible weight in Genma's palm, thanks to the intense rotational force and pent-up impact.

"There's promise…"

The Rasengan's form and power were beginning to take shape. But just as a smile crept onto Genma's face, the smooth surface of the chakra sphere began to ripple and distort.

Sensing this, Genma instinctively increased his control—but that only made the chakra sphere tremble more violently. And then—

Pop!

With a loud, balloon-like explosion, the chakra sphere burst in his hand. The resulting shockwave instantly reduced his clone to a puddle, and sent Genma himself sprawling backward, landing flat on his back.

The surrounding flora, unfortunately, suffered collateral damage.

And Tobirama? He had already moved to a safe distance the moment he saw the chakra sphere starting to go unstable.

Come on now—Tobirama had experienced more than his fair share of "experimental mishaps" while developing jutsu. There was no way he'd get caught off guard by a basic explosion.

"I didn't get the final stage down…" Genma muttered, crawling up with a dirt-smudged face.

He wasn't discouraged. On the contrary, seeing hope had only fired him up. He immediately tried again—and failed again.

After five consecutive failures, he was no closer to success.

At this point, Tobirama, who had been silently observing, finally spoke.

"Ahem. Mind if I give it a try?"

"Of course." Genma nodded, seizing the chance to rest and see if Tobirama had a better idea.

Tobirama performed a clone technique and created two copies of himself. He had already figured out the core secret of the jutsu.

Breaking the Rasengan into three components: the massive release of chakra, the rapid chakra rotation, and—most critically—maintaining its form. The first two were relatively crude; the real technical difficulty lay in the last part: shape control.

Tobirama's main body cupped his hands to release chakra. One clone handled maintaining the sphere's shape, while the other took care of its rotation.

It only took him three attempts to reach the same level Genma had just achieved.

Sure, his method completely piggybacked off Genma's, but Tobirama's talent for jutsu development was still nothing short of incredible.

Boom! Another balloon-bursting sound echoed. Tobirama immediately Body Flickered away, while his clone was blown apart on the spot.

Genma looked at Tobirama with a mix of admiration and silent complaint—those were Shadow Clones.

B-rank really was better, huh?

But Tobirama wasn't fazed by failure. In fact, his eyes were beginning to shine with excitement.

One after another, the "balloon pop" sounds began to echo continuously.

Immersed in the process of jutsu development, Tobirama was far more focused than Genma. On the first day, they made no progress. On the second, they shared insights. By the third day, Tobirama was no longer eating, drinking, or speaking to anyone.

By dawn on the fourth day, Genma was dozing under a large tree when he heard that distinct sound again—but he just rolled over without a second thought.

Creating a rapidly spinning chakra sphere was no longer the challenge. The real difficulty was stabilizing it. So Genma had grown used to the sound.

But then—

Wait. There was no bursting sound.

His eyes shot open. He stood up and looked toward Tobirama.

Tobirama hadn't slept all night. He looked a little rough around the edges, but his face was glowing with energy.

Because he—and both of his clones—had successfully maintained the chakra sphere's form. At this stage, it could officially be called a Rasengan.

"You… you've got to be kidding," Genma stammered, utterly stunned.

He wasn't comparing it to himself. He was comparing it to Naruto, who had mastered the Rasengan in a month—by skipping steps, no less. And Tobirama? This was only the fourth day.

"Talent?" Tobirama shook his head. "No. What I used… was the dumbest method possible."

The dumbest method?

Genma stared blankly. Was that sarcasm, or was Tobirama just being modest in a very strange way?
