Outside the door, Victor—who was clearly eavesdropping—rolled his eyes.

Stubborn fool.

If it hadn't hit him hard, why was he dragging Victor out for drinks night after night? And did he think he could win her back with that tone?

Victor sighed. He'd have to step in again later.

Elena felt a wave of relief at Damian's explanation, but for some reason, a flicker of disappointment bloomed inside her too. She tried to push aside that strange emotion and said lightly, "Well, that's good. Take care of yourself, then. I've got to get back to work."

"No problem."

Damian turned his face away, his expression unreadable. But the magazine in his hands began to crumple under the pressure of his tightening grip.

Elena left.

She passed Victor on her way out but didn't say a word.

After she was gone, Victor walked back into the room. "Boss, you clearly didn't want Miss Cross to leave. So why let her walk away?"

"Stay out of it," Damian muttered, shooting him a glare.
