Colson spread his hands in a helpless gesture. "Sir, he's still too young! You should at least place him on the backup list. Although I don't often talk to Lin Mei, I've heard enough to know that there's a certain... resistance to SHIELD on his part."
"Oh? Is that so?" Nick Fury's voice was low, but curious.
For individuals like Lin Mei—powerful yet difficult to control—Fury had a standard response: eliminate the threat early. But there was something different about Lin Mei. If it weren't for the intervention of a mysterious figure, known only as "Sun Wukong," a god from the Dragon Kingdom who had wrapped a metaphorical leash around him, Fury might have already taken action.
But "Sun Wukong" had his own reasons for caution. He had personally requested that Fury refrain from disturbing Lin Mei, and that plea had given Fury pause. After all, the divine being was not someone to be trifled with. What Fury couldn't understand, though, was why such a powerful figure was associated with the Divine Spear Bureau.
The truth, however, was more complicated than Fury had imagined. Lin Mei wasn't even a member of the Divine Spear Bureau. Zheng Qiu, the Bureau's director, had grown frustrated with SHIELD's lack of respect for his agency. To gather information on Lin Mei, he had infiltrated SHIELD, much to Fury's dismay. But that wasn't the worst of it. Zheng Qiu had tipped off Kunlun about SHIELD's interference, and that was a line no one should cross.
Lin Mei's father, soon to be the new Iron Fist, was a force to be reckoned with—certainly not someone to provoke lightly. So when the situation escalated, SHIELD found itself on the receiving end of a visit from "Sun Wukong" himself. The appearance of such a powerful figure had a profound impact on SHIELD's calculations. Despite Fury's desire to retaliate, the consequences of doing so were too grave to ignore. Even with Captain Marvel in reserve, Fury knew it might not be enough to face down "Sun Wukong."
Meanwhile, Lin Mei's life had become quieter. Her routine now consisted of a simple back-and-forth between home and school. Her mother, Melissa, had grown closer to Pepper Potts, Tony Stark's secretary. The two had much in common—strong women navigating the world of business—and their bond had deepened over time. Lin Mei didn't interfere; after all, Pepper would likely be appointed CEO of Stark Industries soon, and their relationship could only benefit from this connection.
Lin Mei's focus, however, was elsewhere. She had already begun to prepare for the next step: acquiring the remaining shares of Obadiah Stane's company. Lin Mei knew that time was running out before Obadiah's true ambitions came to light. And so, she watched, waited, and planned.
One night, as Lin Mei was immersed in his kitchen—his newfound sanctuary from the bland American food culture—he received a call. The sizzling sounds of his cooking filled the air as he glanced at the caller ID.
"Hello, Mr. Lin! This is Agent Colson. I need your help," came the urgent voice on the other end.
"Ah, it's you? If there's nothing important, I'll hang up," Lin Mei replied with a smirk, turning his attention back to the wok in front of him.
Cooking had become a personal ritual for him. The flavors of his homeland—steamed fish, braised pork, stir-fried dishes—offered him comfort that American fast food could never provide. His mother had even started to appreciate his culinary skills, and now the kitchen was filled with familiar spices, each dish a reminder of home.
But Colson's next words were far from ordinary.
"Wait, Mr. Lin! We're under attack by the Ten Rings! Your mother is here, and there's a giant armored figure chasing us. We don't have much time, and we need your help!"
Lin Mei's expression darkened immediately, and the spatula in his hand froze mid-motion. His mind raced—why was his mother involved?
"Where are you?" Lin Mei's voice was cold and sharp.
"East Avenue, near the Stark Industrial Building. We're on this road!" Colson's voice trembled as he tried to maintain composure.
Lin Mei didn't waste a second. His enhanced body propelled him forward at high speed, quickly covering the distance to the location Colson had provided. As he approached, he saw Colson's team being pursued by terrorists and a massive figure in steel armor—Iron Monger.
"Damn it! Why is Obadiah involved with the Ten Rings? Didn't they steal the Mark I from them? Are they working together now?" Lin Mei thought, trying to piece together the plot.
What he didn't realize was that the Ten Rings had actually given the Mark I to Obadiah, and their alliance was still intact. The situation was far more complicated than he could have imagined.
Lin Mei had grown overly reliant on the movies and scenarios that played out in his mind. He often forgot that the world he lived in was real, and not everything unfolded as neatly as the scripts he had seen.
Wrapped in a layer of energy that crackled with intensity, Lin Mei's body burst with crackling lightning as he charged toward the Ten Rings terrorists and their Iron Monger.
"What is that?" Tiebawang, one of the terrorists, let out a startled buzz of confusion.
By the time he processed what was happening, Lin Mei had already leapt onto a nearby car, his lightning-infused form surging through the air. With a swift and devastating burst of energy, he obliterated all the gunmen inside, the car veering out of control before crashing violently into a wall.
Obadiah Stane, observing the chaos, quickly recognized the figure for what it was—the enemy. His eyes narrowed as he activated a weapon built into his arm: a 20mm caliber rotary cannon, aimed directly at Lin Mei.
Lin Mei's reflexes kicked in without hesitation. A 20mm rotary cannon? What a joke. Only someone with a true steel body could withstand that kind of firepower.
Lin Mei, however, wasn't about to test that theory. His body moved like a phantom, slipping and weaving between the hail of gunfire. Every dodge was seamless, as if he were playing a game of cat and mouse with the shells that zoomed past him. The artillery fire was dense, but Lin Mei made it look effortless, his enhanced agility allowing him to avoid death at every turn.
He knew better than to engage directly. His abilities were extraordinary, but facing off against such heavy weaponry—especially something that could so easily threaten his life—was not a battle he would fight head-on.
