Chapter 20 - Prologue

Everything was numbing. A darkness around him, yet it was light and airy, not suffocating like one would expect. The only thing he could see, though his senses were no longer there, was himself. It was as if he was looking in at a camera, facing him as he floated in the nothingness. He couldn't remember anything - nothing… except her. Already, he missed her, and he wanted to feel her in his arms. Everything he did, it was for her.

Yet, through the darkness, a voice spoke. Not just one, but hundreds. When they came, it sounded as if they were everywhere around him, words after tones harmonising in stacks on top of each other. Alas, he only saw what he assumed to be himself. The voices did not seem to have a body when they spoke, but when they did, he could almost swear that they seemed familiar.

Is this all that one desires to settle for?" They patronised him, interrogated him.

The man twisted again, twitching, listening to the voices and letting loose an action that formed a sigh that didn't exist. "I didn't want it to end this way," He spoke, trying to make them listen. "I never wanted to hurt her… I just wanted to save her."

"And what will you do now? Did one do what one sought out to do?" They demanded. "One does not even know if the tale has truly been written in full. Only what one has decided to write."

He whirled about, fighting against the tide that pulled him further into the depths away from the world he once had in his grasp. Then the voices started to shift into something different. Someone was saying, Pull him out, but the tone shifted. He could hear her, calling his name, screaming. Then the other voices, a bright light over his face, were screaming too. Put him back in! Quick, before it's too late! He shifted, feeling the world come back to him. He felt her arms, surrounding him, her tears landing on his face as her scream faded. Then, he was...
