"Pretending," Josephine echoed coldly. "You mean he faked the whole thing?"
"Oh, completely," Maria said with a gleam in her eye. And the woman left just five minutes before Master Richard arrived."
Josephine was silent, her mind already racing. "Did you hear what they were talking about? Did he tell her anything?"
Maria shook her head regretfully. "No, madam. I was just in and out."
Josephine blinked. "That's it?"
"Well…" Maria gave her a significant look. "Master Richard arrived not long after.
Josephine sat down slowly, frowning. "So the old man wanted Richard to come here… for what, exactly?"
"I don't know," Maria admitted. "He never said anything in front of me. Once the lady left, the old master went straight to the west wing and stayed there."
Josephine tapped her manicured fingers against the armrest. "So, do you… have any idea who she was?"
