Chapter 24

The rain poured heavily on the streets, a deafening roar against the concrete. People rushed to the nearest shelter, their umbrellas snapping backward in the cold wind. Cars beeped angrily in the traffic, headlights blurring into streams of white and red against the slick, black roads.

With drenched hair clinging to her face and clothes heavy with rainwater, Becky leaned against the cold, rough wall of a shelter. She seemed to be the only one there, except for the blurred flashes of passing cars. The air was sharp and cold, smelling faintly of wet asphalt and exhaust fumes.

It was now way past six o'clock in the evening. She had stood there for two hours, shivering slightly as the chill sank into her bones.

She looked at her phone with numb fingers, the screen flickering under a thin layer of rain. Then, with trembling hands, she dialed the only number she knew would pick up.
