I stared at the ruby ring on my finger, watching how it caught the morning light coming through my window. It felt heavier than it should, like it carried the weight of promises I wasn't sure I could keep.

"What am I doing?" I whispered to myself, tracing the silver band.

When Kieran dropped to his knee yesterday on the porch, everything had frozen. His eyes—usually so guarded—had been open, vulnerable. How could I say no when the union might save us both? But saying yes didn't stop the worry gnawing at my chest.

I closed my eyes, remembering how Ronan had turned away, his shoulders stiff as he'd headed to watch. He'd saved Jax from the silver pit trap. The same Jax who had threatened him constantly. That wasn't the action of the cold killer I'd first met.
