Lin Fan walked calmly at the front, with Heloi and Lilian following behind him.
"Master, Li Cheng is at the staircase entrance, and the second-floor boss is in the room opposite the stairs," Lilian suddenly said.
Her voice was soft, with a hint of something cryptic in her eyes, completely different from the sulking girl from moments ago.
Although she felt a tinge of jealousy, Lilian was very clear about her role: she was Lin Fan's maid. Protecting Lin Fan and solving his problems was her duty.
To her, Lin Fan would always come first.
Lin Fan climbed the stairs without reacting to what Lilian had just said, his expression indifferent.
"What can Li Cheng possibly do?" The fact that Lin Fan had let him live earlier was proof enough that he didn't see Li Cheng as a threat.
He was nothing more than a barking dog.
With a cold smirk, Lin Fan stepped onto the stairs leading to the second floor of the Nine-Story Monster Tower. The moment he set foot on the second floor, the monsters there reacted as if provoked, rushing toward the staircase.
In such a narrow space, if all the second-floor monsters gathered there…
Lin Fan's eyes darkened. Unlike when he first entered the tower, he could now sense the monsters' movements clearly, thanks to the Nine Nether Buff.
"Lilian, keep an eye on Heloi," Lin Fan instructed, tossing his enchanted iron sword to Heloi for her protection.
Although Heloi was strong in her original form, that didn't mean her humanoid form shared the same level of power.
Until Lin Fan had a clear understanding of Heloi's abilities, he wasn't comfortable letting her act alone. To be cautious, he assigned Lilian to guard her.
"Understood," Lilian replied softly.
Even though she was jealous, Lilian would always carry out Lin Fan's orders. If Lin Fan told her to protect Heloi, then she would ensure no harm came to her.
Lilian shifted from Lin Fan's left side to stand beside Heloi.
Lin Fan walked at the front, drawing his enchanted iron sword as a dark purple aura from the Nine Nether Buff wrapped around the blade.
Meanwhile, Li Cheng, hiding in the shadows, had already spotted Lin Fan. A sinister smile spread across his face, his eyes glinting like poisoned daggers.
"As long as he steps on the last stair, he's dead!" A gleam of madness flashed in his eyes.
Under the watchful gaze of Li Cheng and the man in glasses, Lin Fan finally stepped onto the last stair.
In an instant, countless monsters burst out of the rooms, roaring as they charged toward Lin Fan.
The monsters on this floor were far more frenzied than those on the first. While their health points remained the same, their movement and attack speeds were unnaturally fast.
Seeing the horde of crazed monsters, Lin Fan raised his sword and began fighting them. He moved like the wind, darting through the monsters like a ghost.
Every door on the second floor was wide open, likely Li Cheng's handiwork.
Witnessing this, Lin Fan's eyes grew colder.
He really doesn't learn his lesson, does he?
From his hiding spot, Li Cheng watched as Lin Fan became surrounded by monsters. A twisted smile crept across his face.
"Yes~~ that's it! Kill him! Keep attacking him!" As Lin Fan began to struggle, Li Cheng's expression grew even more frenzied.
The boss in the room opposite also began to stir among the monsters, roaring furiously. Even through the wall, its overwhelming presence could be felt.
Sensing the boss's immense power, Li Cheng's excitement reached new heights. His eyes turned bloodshot, his demeanor growing more maniacal.
"Yes! Break through the wall! Come on, boss, hurry up and get out!"
"I don't believe you can't possibly survive this!"
Li Cheng crouched in the shadows, his eyes gleaming with venom as he let out a chilling laugh.
But just as he was reveling in his triumph, Lin Fan's figure suddenly disappeared from the staircase!
Li Cheng, lost in his euphoria, froze in confusion.
"Where is he?" Li Cheng frowned.
The sudden disappearance of Lin Fan left Li Cheng completely stunned. Just a moment ago, Lin Fan was clearly in sight—how could someone so big vanish into thin air?
A wave of unease swept over Li Cheng. He frantically scanned the area for Lin Fan, but the staircase was limited in space, and Lin Fan was nowhere to be seen. Where could he have gone?
Li Cheng grew increasingly anxious.
"Where did Lin Fan go?"
Unable to pinpoint Lin Fan's location, a deep sense of insecurity took hold of Li Cheng. He stood up from his hiding spot, his eyes darting around in panic.
Initially, he thought he could rely on the zombies to give away Lin Fan's position, but after Lin Fan's disappearance, the zombie horde acted like headless flies, aimlessly wandering around.
Things weren't going as Li Cheng had planned, and cold sweat began to drip down his forehead.
What was going on? Where was Lin Fan?
Wasn't Lin Fan supposed to be fighting off the zombies, drawing the boss out of the room, and then getting torn apart by the endless swarm of monsters?
How could he just disappear…
Unable to find Lin Fan, Li Cheng nervously glanced around, his eyes unusually bright in the darkness. Wiping the sweat from his brow, his breathing grew erratic.
'Could he have discovered me—?'
'No— no way, he can't have discovered me.'
The thought crept into his mind but was quickly dismissed with a forced denial.
Li Cheng continued to look around, gasping for air.
"Maybe he lost his balance and fell back down to the first floor?" Li Cheng muttered to himself, trying to comfort himself with an explanation. He forced a smile that looked worse than crying.
The man in glasses beside Li Cheng was equally uneasy, watching Li Cheng with a complicated expression.
"Do you think Lin Fan has figured out it was us?" the man in glasses asked hesitantly.
"If he realizes this was our doing, then—"
"Impossible!" Li Cheng snapped, cutting him off before he could finish.
While he vehemently denied the possibility, a gnawing fear tugged at his heart.
Still, Li Cheng couldn't let that fear show. He was, after all, the Federation Research Division Director.
No matter the circumstances, he had to maintain his composure.
"He can't possibly know it's us. We're hidden in the shadows, and with so many monsters on the second floor keeping him occupied, how could he have time to worry about us?" Li Cheng mumbled to himself, though even he wasn't entirely convinced by his own words.
Suppressing his growing fear, he forced out a hollow laugh.
"And even if he does figure it out, so what? I'm Li Cheng, the Federation Research Division Director. What can he do to me?"
"He hasn't dared to kill me all this time—what makes this time any different?"
"He's just trying to scare us. He talks about the Federation being a paper tiger, but isn't he afraid of it all the same?"
Li Cheng kept repeating these words to bolster his own courage, but his eyes betrayed him, constantly scanning the area for any sign of Lin Fan.
Without knowing Lin Fan's whereabouts, he felt completely unmoored. His erratic breathing and frantic glances betrayed the fear that had consumed him.
At that moment, Lin Fan silently appeared behind him.
"Are you looking for me?"
