Chapter 12 - This Is Not Our Home

Feeling their adrenaline rush they both began to look around the room for places to hide "Hold onto me!" Jack said in a loud whisper while grabbing onto Zack as he heard Jack chant something under his breath as a light green glow wrapped around them as Zack could see his body fading away from view, once the door opened Cain could be seen peeping his head inside and looking around as his eyes slowly fell on them as they stood in front of the window- moonlight shining through them.

After a few moments of scanning the room again he closed the door as Jack let go Zack- now revealing their presence and their bodies in the room "What was that?" Zack asked as Jack smirked "Elven arts that I picked up from some private lessons with miss Kyla, what you think?" He asked while going towards the window that also acted a patio.

"We need to get back to our rooms, it's already bad enough we was almost caught here by Sir Cain." Jack said as they both fled from the room and jumped down and began heading back while a question still lingered in Zack's mind…where was Indra?

Inside his office Siegfried sighed while walking back to his chair "Sometimes I don't know what I'm gonna do with that boy Cain. He tries my patience and uses our name as a scapegoat." Siegfried finished saying as he sat back down in his chair.

"He cares about this family's future, he just wants to see it come into fruition just like you do." Cain said as Siegfried laced his fingers together "He still doesn't understand that without me the people here wouldn't be safe, they only have real protection because I am here to make sure that there's no injustice." Siegfried said while rubbing his right hand over the left side of his chest as a marking could be seen.

"You made that decision that day because you had to…no one loves the Dragonkin race more than you do." Cain said while knowing what he was referring to in that moment "What would you like me to do with the boy?" Cain asked as Siegfried gave a long sigh.

"Leave him be, I think he knows if I wanted him punished he will be." He said as Cain gave a low bow "I do as you command…my master." Cain said as he looked up at him with a deep crimson black with crimson irises, as if molten blood swirled within the abyss of each eye.

A moment later he disappeared into the shadows as Siegfried was left alone remembering that the closest person to him and maybe the only person in the world that could kill was him was a powerful Demon.

In town Kyla and Brom had already finished their meeting and got all the answers she needed as she began making her way back down the hall and stairs with him at her side "What will you do now?" Brom asked as Kyla gave a small shrug.

"I plan on seeing if things match up on my end, if not I plan on catching this imposter and seeing myself who this other "noble" is." She said as Brom gave a firm nod "I will keep an eye on your daughter and the rest of the students while they're here, I hope things are okay at the manor." Brom said as they reached the bottom of the stairwell.

"I hope so too." Kyla said as she took a look at the people having fun and drinking to their heart's content "You miss the good ole days too huh?" He said while watching her reaction to the crowd in front of her.

"I do, I miss my people and the way things used to be before the war between us and the humans. Now we risk potentially being slaves if we leave the land Lord Siegfried obtained for us." She said as Brom gave a low hum.

"I remember when the humans came up with this town's name in order to be funny behind closed doors, and before then they had officially labeled us the "Impure Born" anything not human was not considered natural." Brom said while crossing his arms.

"Stay a while and have a drink. I don't mind reminiscing with a close friend right about now." Brom said as he guided her towards the bar area and grabbed them a table to themselves and after a moment of sitting Kaela came to the table with two beer mugs and quickly walked off.

"But I don't drink beer?" Kyla said as Brom chuckled while picking up his mug "Don't knock my ale until you try it." He said as she picked it up and had a sip as her eyes immediately lit up "This-This is amazing!" She said as he chuckled.

"That's the reaction I always get, I put my all into this inn, this place is all I got left- a faded memory of what I was supposed to share with my brothers in arms." Brom said while sighing slowly "Now it's just me, the inn and Kaela." He said as Kyla looked at the waitress work silently and quietly at the bar.

"Where'd you even find her?" Kyla asked as Brom eyes looked as if he remembered it all when she asked him and instead of happiness there was only sadness instead "Before my capture, it was during a campaign led by a noble lord who owned the Mirewood territory. He was insistent on "cleansing" all the Demi-human settlements, and my village was one of them." Brom said as Kyla frowned.

"During this cleanse I was killing as many soldiers as I could, during my fatigue and near death state she saved me and convinced me to flee so I could one day rebuild the Were-Bear tribe. Only for me to still be captured later on during my travels and thrown into a arena as a gladiator for human entertainment." Brom said as he began taking a swig of his ale.

"She's been by my side for a while now and I don't doubt her and in return she doesn't doubt me." Brom said as Kyla gave a small nod "Anyone from the were-tribes could still walk among the humans, why not live among them instead of here?" She asked as he scoffed.

"Because they have a scholar from the Sanctum of the Silver Tower, this scholar prick made a device that detects us even in our human form. Even if I wanted to pass as a human and live among them I can't, they'd spot me at the entrance of the city and probably try to kill me by nightfall." Brom said while leaning back in his chair.

"And besides, fuck the humans and their holier than thou attitude. I don't wanna live among no people who believe their shit smell better than anyone else's." Brom said as Kyla understood that's a suffocating way to live.

"Hopefully one day, everything would go back to the way it used to be." Kyla said as leaned in and tapped the rune on their table to make their conversation sound proof as it confused her "What if you didn't have to wait for one day? Would you take the opportunity?" Brom asked as she was shocked and from the looks on his face he wasn't joking around.

"If there was a opportunity like that I'd have heard about it."

"Well? You're hearing about it now." Brom countered as Kyla could feel the alcohol wearing off "You're talking about taking matters into your own hands? Going around our lord?" Kyla said as Brom sighed.

"I'm not saying I'm not appreciative but this isn't a life any of us asked for. This place? This land? Is practically a oversized refugee camp."

"But we are not slaves here and he fought for our freedom, we could leave this land if we wanted to."

"So you saying that I could rebuild my tribe right now if I wanted to?" Brom asked as it made her pause "Your student, the werewolf? How come he hasn't rebuilt his tribe yet? And he's doing nothing but getting older, how much longer do you think that's containable?" Brom said as Kyla remained silent.

"Think about what I'm offering the next couple of days, take a walk around Greyhaven and ask yourself…is the life I want to leave behind for my daughter and her future children." Brom said while tapping the rune and exiting from the table.

Brom made a lot of arguing points but to Kyla what he was offering still wasn't clear and if it was expansion she knows the land they have now was only attainable due to their lord being a Dragon and even he could only push the humans but so far before they retaliate.

In her thoughts Kyla left the table and began heading back to the manor to see what the next steps were for what happened earlier on between Indra and Silas.
